COUNTER BORE SNAP ON HANDLES! Shawn, if you counter bore the opening of the handles to the diameter of the un-threaded size of the shifter you'll be able to screw on them all the way to the bottom of the hole. And there will be a a little shoulder for it to butt up against, firming it all up.

Never more perfectly stated! Unless it's interior walled and insulated. Should spray foam it and just shave the walls in.
@kyferez1
@kyferez1 11 ай бұрын
Get a one part spray foam instead. Yes it's gonna cost more, but it will eliminate 5 issues rather than only one. It will stop rattles. It will keep water out. It will prevent drafts. It will insulate. It will prevent the galvonic corrosion if you get a small amount between the steel frame and aluminum shell. It WILL be worth it. I think at most it will cost you 600. If you want to use it to mostly acheive the benefits and reduce cost, you could only spray the joints in the shell and floor, window edges, and areas where shell contacts steel frame, that would likely only cost 250 for a 12-can kit.

I used to build Kit camper trailers and work with some buddies to take old ones and fix them for rough area camping. When you tore out all the wood you basically took all of the light weight shear strength supporting the entire trailer. Now your adding tons of weight that your buggie will not be able to pull up the obstacles. You need to find another trailer and start over but do not take all the wood and insulation out. Even the bed and counter were adding shear support. When you go to salt lake for the off road expo go see a trailer manufacturer and talk to them.

Nice progress, on all the projects! Over the decades I've used Styrofoam for insulation, but for small & odd shapes, I've offered low ball prices for the broken sheets at the lumber yards (once offered $15 for a couple of sheets worth, they agreed, but said I had to take ALL the broken sheets! Ended up with a large pile in my storage barn, lol! Took years to use it up...). Thanx !

Have a look at premium ropes splicing videos, they will teach you to splice anything to anything. Splicing UHMHMPE isn't hard, but their are couple rules to do it right. A fid is x21 rope diameter and you need to bury 3 fid lengths to have 100% strength. The last fid length of bitter end must be a gentle taper, UHMHMPE hates changing size (aka hard step from bitter end or the tail bury hanging out etc).

Learning how to splice a rope or a winch line is an invaluable skill to have. I have never had to splice a winch line yet but I constantly splice rope to put loops or connect rope. Those vampire straw things with wire grabbers really help pushing and pulling in between strands and then it sits there and under tension it gets even stronger. I would also suggest wrapping the splice with electrical tape or shrink wrap or even hog rings or something but simple splice is good enough too.

I keep wondering if I should mention this but... You do know that aluminum and steel aren't compatible don't you ? A chemical reaction will occur as well as holes in the aluminum. Just say n. I used to haul gas tankers and we had to use a median material between the steel frame and the tanker rails. Many times simple duct tape would work to keep the 2 from touching. You likely already know this ...but just incase, I had to say something. Dave Nova Scotia.

2 elements present in your rust belt area that are conducive to bimetallic corrosion which are not present in the Utah desert. Constant humidity and salt spray from the road. I live in the Mojave Desert of California and my offroad race buggy built in the 1970s has plenty of aluminum on steel that has no such corrosion. Floor panel, skidplates, firewall, front interior panel. Been there near 50 years. There are some minor spots where they've chafed and there is mild surface rust on the steel. No bimetallic corrosion.

Seeing you weld upwards on that tube without burning through just made me realize how thick that is. I’m starting to see what y’all were talking about with a second small moon. Have you considered 16ga tube? We use it in theatre a lot for moving scenery. It is about as strong as the 2x2 wood you took out (before it rotted) and fairly light. I wouldn’t make a roll cage from it but I’m assuming you aren’t planning to ride in the camper. It’s also fairly cheap being so thin.
