Kyle heads to Wheat Ridge, CO to charge on a ChargePoint Express Plus for the first time. These can be configured up to a 400kW output shared across two posts or 350kW per output port. In this case, the unit is a 200kW arrangement but is the same functionally as a higher power version - he plugs in a 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid using the OE accessory CCS to Tesla adapter.

@@anydaynow01 The new generation of EVs are awesome, but these third-party charging networks’ charging stations are so faulty that it’s disheartening. I was hoping to watch this video from Kyle without having to see the charger fail, but of course, it ended up failing, haha! Just had a great rental experience with Model 3 from Hertz. I was supercharging without having to worry about reliability. Hoping to rent a Kia EV6 on Turo to try it out (or when Hertz gets them), but definitely worried about the charging experience.

Great to see chargers being sold for third-party ownership. This will allow gas stations to buy them and operate them for profit. Once they can make money, chargers will be everywhere and competition will lower charging prices.

In Europe there are many chargers with these PhoenixContact connectors, all of them are liquidcooled. Way more reliable than the H+S connectors on the ABB units. The only downside on these PhoenixContact plugs is that they are very heavy. On some cars (Audi e-tron for example) you have to hold the plug during the handshake process, otherwise it won't start to charge. And in Europe Chargepoint is now installing Alpitronic chargers at most of their locations. You can ask them on your visit if they want to bring them to the US as well ;)

Historically, EA chargers were very unreliable. But their new 350kW, very tall white/green units work well. I’ve charged a Lucid in Naples, FL using plug-n-charge a several times w/o a glitch. It was the same experience as a Tesla Supercharger. Without preconditioning, it started at 269kW and at 94% SoC was still pumping 59kW.

On the public user side, chargepoint has been a favorite of mine when I can't get to a SuperCharger. I carry the CCS-1 adapter and have used it in Durango and Ouray CO. I don't like the rotating head only because its return spring system is too strong and many people will have a hard time wrestling with it. Maybe that can be adjusted to better accommodate the general public. The company had some growing pains but their attention to fleet operators and city owned sites was a wise startup choice and apparently is helping them add the public access now. Good detail and yes, see if you can do a home facility visit in CA. Cheers and thanks agin for a well done video.

Nice to see that also in the US more and more CSS networks offer chargers that can deliver the power that current cars can accept. It is impossible for one network to deliver enough charging stations for everyone’s needs. You now need some kind of roaming between the networks to get P&C work throughout all the networks, or use the P&C system that BMW wants to use where you can add up to 5 different credentials for 5 different networks, but I don’t know how it will work (manually, automatically through handshake or with geofencing).

I went by there a couple of weeks ago to pick up an order and noticed those stations but I didn't need juice. The patrol car was also there. I wonder if it's security just for the station. 25 cents a minute to park after 30 minutes is a bit harsh for a site that isn't being used that much. There was one EQS at the Plus while all the other spots were empty.

Great video, but not exactly how demand charges work. Usually they are max demand over any 15 min time over a 30 day billing cycle. So time of use will really won’t apply. If you pull 300 kW just for 15 minutes at midnight, that is the demand charge. It’s basically the utility saying they are reserving this capacity for you In case you need it. Setting time of use is still important if the utility has a time of use rate to incentivize that option for the energy charge kWh. Many utilities are looking a demand charge adjustment riders with EV charging to limit demand charges until the load factor is normalized as use increases.

Please explain/correct my thinking: I think when Tesla Super Charging the charger is part of the "control" of the rate/current as well as the car. When charging at home (120/240VAC) the car controls the rate/current. So, IF this is true why would I think it is safe to charge at this high rate (DC) from a non-Tesla charger where it is anyones guess what profile the charger supplies the power to my precious Tesla Battery?

He did do this on his Model 3, which is likely the same kind of batteries your Y. If I remember right, at 100k miles, I think he had like 7% degradation, and the battery heats up a little faster due to increased resistance. I have 20k miles on my 3, and only supercharge on road trips. So far, about 2-3% degradation according to BMS, which it's been at since about 1k miles. The Reality is Stressful: 4min in and it fails. You then have a car sitting there on a high output charger, not charging with 11% battery while you are having lunch and everyone else waiting is getting mad at you for being plugged in and displaying charging complete. You get back to your car finding you still need to charge, figure out what went wrong while you get all the death stares from everyone. You reset the charger, start charging again and everyone rolls their eyes at you thinking you are unplugging. Then you are nervous about leaving your car because you dont know if its going to fail again so you babysit it and double your rest stop because it simply was unreliable.

Ok, my takeaway, fancy looking charger that’s says that it’s 350 KW but charges at 200 max, has a bulky non-tesla connector that needs an expensive adaptor to work. Isn’t exactly plug and play since it requires fiddling with the touch screen (also highly susceptible to vandalism due to its fragility), credit card may not work sometimes. Even after it starts charging, it may stop randomly for no reason whatsoever. Overall, highly unreliable. How is it better than a tesla supercharger?
@natehoy6924

It's not. Kyle is doing a review of a CCS1 station compared to other CCS1 stations. Not once did he use the term "Supercharger" or compare it to that network. if i was a government purchaser, id want charger that have between 80-120kw output and does it reliably. most normal cars being sold at the moment cant handle more than that or their curve isnt worth worrying about more than that, and the price difference of installation is substantial. more often than not the max power from main grid to each site is a limit anyway. starting to demand a new substation for everywhere that is a suitable location is worse than accepting the limits of what is already in the ground. please talk more about costs, cost of purchase of the kit, cost of the installation of it, the ongoing cost of back end stuff. i cant see many people making their return on investment on dc chargers, nevermind a business model of profit. yourself and Bjorn dont seem to appreciate that someone has to do the initial investment and when talking about the latest vehicle want to moan that the charging pumps are too slow.
