A concrete retaining wall would have been the best cus the blocks don't always hold well with time... especially in moisture. But that would have been 4x the cost at least. Blocks are too porous but can also be plasted with damp proof treatment before backfilling. I hope this will hold until the soil settles and vegetation cover grows to prevent erosion. It's a mind battle to spend more for quality. Congrats

Hello Korewaa, I would have advised you to build an “L” shaped retaining wall (instead of this gravity retaining wall. L shaped retaining walls has a wider foundation base which will prevent the wall from overturning. Retaining are more likely to fail by overturning or by sliding. Hope there are supporting calculations for the design of the wall. Secondly, the weep hole is a very good idea, but the water should be directed well away from the retaining wall foundation to prevent failure in future. Personally. I would have not backfill the soil directly behind the wall, I would have left a gap of say 300mm behind the wall , inserted a French drain ( a perforated pipe) at the base and back of the wall , fill it up with gravel to the top of the wall , so water will be drained behind the wall instead of the unsightly drainage from the weep holes from front of the wall.

Korewaa . Retaining walls are build slightly different from that. I think the wall will hold just fine. It's about 1.8m tall. Backfill is about 1.2m.(I counted the courses). That's very little earth pressure pushing on the wall. @Joemensa is absolutely right. He describes what is called a cantilever retaining wall build with steel rebar and concrete. Though in the event that the ground pushes further and you see some cracks on your wall, you will have to build it thicker (80-100cm wide) with a triangular cross section. If in doubt consult your civil engineer.

That's exactly what was going through my mind. Because I had bad experience in the past. The rain water ran down my retaining wall twice until I used interconnected perforated pipes, backfilled with lot of granite gravels and landscape fabric to separate the gravels and dirt and that has guided the rain water to one side of the retaining wall. For 5yrs now, it's been solid

Great work but please please please build a water funnel system to drain the water away from the retaining wall. If not, you run high risks of damaging the base of the wall over time and the wall at that point won't do its job as the water pouring along the wall will erode it. we love the updates. Youre doing a great job with your project :) I really hope you see this comment

Sis take it from me and this is very important, I’ve gone through this same situation twice, so please don’t joke with what I am about to say, the most important part of building in ghana is nothing but the plumbing and electrical work, please no matter what you do, make sure you get those two right otherwise you will regret building, electrical and plumbing goes in the concrete walls so when there is mistake it becomes very expensive, take after tiling and painting only to find out there is a water because the plumber did a Lousy work or the electrician did a poor and no one knows where the mistake is
