Dane, go into the Hero9 profile setup menu and turn the wind filter setting to 'off'. You'll notice an absolutely massive increase in sound quality on the water. No more muffled sound.

I've run Great Falls several times. I came back to perform a concert many years later and went out there just to look it over for old times' sake. It was low water, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The water is a lot deeper than it looks in a lot of places, and the rocks under there really look nasty when you see them at the low water stage.

Start with the class 1 & 2 stuff and work your way up paddling with people who are better than you. Understand that people die on rapids like Dane runs, even pros who miss their lines. You can have a ton of fun without running stuff like this and upping your life insurance :-)

Awesome stuff, who was the kid you were with, he is a monster too. What is the difference between a long boat and say the antix? also what would the difference be time wise?
@danejacksonkayak4 жыл бұрын
Kaelin Friedenson, a crusher. Long boat would carry its speed better through the flatwater and slow moving current better. But the antix would hold it’s own in the big waves and holes.

Great Falls of the Potomac, just outside Wash DC. I think it was open to everyone until a woman kayaker drowned there years back. My understanding it's an invitational now.
@ethanfrangenberg77334 жыл бұрын
David Prange it was invitational this year, but in past years before was open to everyone.
@ian_brown4 жыл бұрын
@@big1dog23 The race has never been open to everyone, the race organizers can turn down anyone based on their skill level since it's a very dangerous set of rapids. It was technically an invitational this year because of COVID to limit the number of people involved, but usually one has to "apply" to race
@big1dog234 жыл бұрын
@@ian_brown IDK, I just thought I recalled reading that woman drowning years back and assumed maybe that changed things. Anyways...fun times. Edit, she was practicing for the race. I used to get the AWA Journal and recalled something fuzzy, but here's an article. RIP Ms. Christy. Sounds like she was a wonderful young woman. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2442083/Extreme-kayaker-Shannon-Christy-killed-2-days-60-Minutes-Sports-profile.html
@johnmilotrain72174 жыл бұрын
@@big1dog23 It's been "apply/invite" only since back when I lived there in the 90s. The falls are off limits outside of the race but the rapids at the bottom are often played in all year round except at the big flood stages. You could surf a 1500sqft house in some of the holes the falls make at the higher floods. There is a very serious kayaking community in the area in part due to the locks, dickerson, and the wave testing basin (although I don't know if they still paddle in that).

Playing in whitewater is how a boater acquires skills to be safe. These guys have the skills to play in Class V rapids. That is why they are able to run rapids like Great Falls safely.
