We use a Norwood hd36 portable sawmill to make nearly all the materials for this build from locally sourced timbers.
AX1 - Compact Wood Hatchet for All Tasks and Purposes // U.S Amazon: bit.ly/44wVNsV, Worldwide delivery: bit.ly/44zeGuG
We use ash, cedar, and pine for most of the structure and siding.
We'll use cedar, pine, ash, maple, and whatever else we can scrounge up from the 30 acres around us. The aim is to avoid using as much store bought material as possible and keep the budget reasonably low.
Originally we set a budget of $1000, but that included the use of a frame from an old camper trailer. As we build, the budget will remain flexible in effort to produce a cabin that we are proud of and one that will last a long while, be comfortable, and sleep real human beings.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. This channel will approach self reliance from a modern perspective. and will focus on various build projects using modern amenities, and tools to build a completely self reliant lifestyle.
Many people ask me where I am from and where I film my projects. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada, and live in an area where off-grinding is easy because I have lots of land to build on and experiment with different buildings and materials. Everything I do is to try to be more self reliant, and to depend less on others. But that doesn't mean I don't like working together with other people on projects. Knowing people who have skills is part of being self reliant, and trading skills is a great way to get more things done!

Just wondering if you have enough air circulating under the mattress so it doesn’t get moldy. Maybe make a very low latticed platform for underneath it.

If you make an addition, perhaps make a bathroom with a composting toilet and a shower inside. Also for more seating and doubling as sleeping, a futon would be good. I’d personally would like to see you install a Murphy bed. That would be so cool.

Secret to keeping the cooler cold longer. Do not use regular ice. I freeze water bottles. As they melt, you then use the water. And i dont buy small water bottles. I use flavoured sparkling water at home. When they are empty, i fill with tap water and freeze. The larger the bottle, the longer they last. 2 liter pop bottles would work great. Love your work. ❤

I once stayed in a little cabin like that same setup for sleeping for work.I found by screwing in a hook the kind you usually hang bicycles with in the garage from the center beam on the ceiling I can easily make a dumb waiter. I chose to use some neat looking cordage and an old aluminum bucket. That way your hands aren't full when you're trying to climb up and down the ladder. A tie off cleat can be secure to your loft easy peasy. I hope you guys had a great anniversary.PS you might also want to turn that mattress the other direction I found it easier to roll out of bed over to the ladder than it is to crawl.😉

chunk of quarter round attached to the door over your threshold to keep rain and/or dust settling in. Do you have any tempered glass you could mount under your safety rail? a ceramic tile will destroy your knives but be great for hot pots. get a wood or plastic cutting board.

I think an addition would be a great idea. I think people sometimes build cabins/homes, etc. in stages. In actuality, you could eventually have an addition on both sides, the front and the back, but that would take a while. An enclosed front porch, an enclosed back porch, and rooms on either side could expand the possible uses for the now smaller cabin.

With all your power stations and panels... if you have a good solar window to collect enough power for it and induction hob might reduce your propane use some... I have been impressed by a NuWave Flex induction cooker and the low 500 watt demand setting it has... for coffee in the morning kind of setup... less propane use would lower that bill... the setting up solar systems can be expensive... but once in place... it might be a direction to explore for more content of interest to those going off grid... PV solar cooking works well with induction cooking... Another rabbit hole is actual classic solar cooking with DYI cookers that on sunny days and in places with higher percentage of sunny days... I live in Puget Sound region of Washington state, a lot of overcast, I have some issues to design around, but finding PV solar cooking is a way to time shift solar energy collection to possibly be a good route to explore... have used it in a 3 day power outage... with big enough power stations small fridge can be maintained fairly well. And I have used a microwave plugged into the fridge power station.

I don't have a Birch Living mattress, but got another brand off Amazon in 2015 to replace a "back killing" bunkbed/futon setup, when I installed a Murphy bed in my 12' x 14' cabin in the woods of Alabama. My only regret is I wished I'd got the Full-XL mattress, cuz I'm 6'1", regardless, I sleep much better now & don't wake up w/back pain. BTW, I nailed your anniversary question, but you didn't hear me. Cheers 🍻

Hey boss. A while back I came across a video about an underground house, but one of the more interesting features was the refrigerator. It was set inside the counter on a spring, or hydraulic counterweight so that the top and drawers lifted up instead of out keeping the cold air of the fridge in the tub rather than spilling out when you opened it. Just an interesting idea for a future cabin build feature. Keep up the content as I live vicariously through your projects.
