Awesome. You guys should use a rust converter. Dust sand, rinse and apply and it will turn the rust into a primer that you can paint. My family buys and sells containers out of California and we use it all the time for surface rust. It's really inexpensive to buy. Love your videos by the way.

On the snake; I had a rattlesnake try to come in my glass door one day when we lived in California. I also found a different rattlesnake just a few inches from my front door one day. Now that we are in the part of Tennessee where there are no rattlesnakes, I thought I could relax. But no. One copperhead in the creek a few feet from my granddaughter and another at the ranch where the grandchildren play on the driveway. Living in snake country (no matter where I live) is an adventure.

There are paints available that reflect the sun's heat away from your containers roof. It works FANTASTIC. It will drop the heat inside by a minimum of 15 degrees. Vinny 🇺🇸

Cool Coat is one; www.rainguard.com works well, eliminates IR & UV heat gain. I've used it hundreds of times on steel buildings, cell sites, for over 20 years. 2" of interior isopolypropoline foam & 15 mil exterior cool Coat will give you the net effect of a 16" conventional wall section. This technology was originally developed for NASA / shuttle. Good luck with your project!

On ships we used needle guns to remove the rust, then we'd paint the surface with something like Corroseal 8233? which chemically changes the rust and inhibits further rusting. Then we'd prime and paint with 2 part paints. It is the roof and flooring you have to be most concerned with. You might consider putting on a rubber roof on your containers. They'd last longer than you and maintain value. Just a few ideas.

Guys I live in Australia, and I use to work for Royal Wolf shipping containers. I am also a welder fabricator by trade. First the wire wheel you used for the first bit is exactly what you need to do to all the rusty spots. However it would be far easier, faster, and better if you used a 5 in angle grinder. trust me your going to need one anyway. Once you have got rid of all the, we call them rust oysters. then treat the metal with phosphoric acid based rust converter. this changes the iron oxide, (rust) into iron phosphate. then its ready for paint, and the rust wont come back for many years. secondly for places like the roof, and anywhere unseen Please paint the bare metal with a bitumen/tar based underbody deadener, like what they use under cars. this tar based paint will stop the rust from ever returning. basically it doesn't ever set underneath. unlike rubber based products. do not use rubber based paints over steel. the rust will form and spread underneath the paint. Iam going through the exact same process right now, building a home with 2 20ft containers, and a caravan park home. looking forward to following your build.

I highly recommend you use a tar based paint for the top, also primer is breathable, so it will allow water to absorb into it and start more rust, so dont wait to long on painting it. Something that can speed up the rust repair is renting a sand blaster or buy a cheap one and cheap blasting media, you can get 50lb bags of blasting material at rural king for $5 a bag, just buy a giant tarp to spread out around the area so you can catch a large portion of the media and then use a magnet to remove the metal from it, recycle and repeat blasting the rust away. lastly i had lots of rusting from condensation on my container i use for a workshop only, you need to spray the inside with closed cell foam insulation to prevent the condensation from occurring inside the container.

Spencer I am a welder for like ever on the rust thing you could use a good quality grinding wheel to take off the heavy stuff you can run on your cut off grinder and they have several products on the market that you brush on that makes a protective coating converting the rust to neutral and then you can paint over it. The stuff I am thinking of is the color of milk. just thought to mention to make life a little easier.

I already borrowed an idea from you. I had a container delivered this week. Not a complete house but a theft resistant storage for tools and material. The plan is to put a roof over it and a deck on the north side. 20 ft container 32 x 16 roof. need the space for solar panels. Anyway County wont permit it unless the container has a foundation so bingo I will weld in my corners and meet the requirements. Great Idea! I can't wait to see how you join them and insulate them. The structure point is the corner not two feet in. No rough plumbing and electrical. Should have put down visqueen for moisture barrier. Would have offset four foot deck each end. Would have put foam insulation and rodent proof critters will move in to stay warm. First choice cement block. Perimeter . There are some web sites on container engineering dos and not. Do video on your design plan and approval of building permit. Otherwise inspector will change things . Standard first inspection roof, rough framing windows doors rough plumbing. Ask building dept for meeting of any code adjustments and identify all container projects done previously. Then can have community hearing to scope change orders or special code amendments for all projects.

I think you need to look at insulating your walls and roof! After that you can use a membrane or other barrier with a slope to allow water to run off rather than pooling. You can then have water catchment .... if that is what you are going for ;0) You do need to rustproof the metalwork, but if you are insulating (Kingspan is good, but you may have alternatives in the US) you should not be getting the metalwork wet ... so no corrosion! I would look at Sacrificial Anodes to prolong the container life too, and Now is the ideal time to install it cheaply! There are a whole slew of things you should be looking at right now in order to incorporate the good ideas into your design before running into problems, and maybe having to re-do aspects of your home! ..... Best of luck!

I didn’t know catchment was a word. YOU ARE RIGHT! “The addition of collecting water, especially the collection of rainfall over a natural drainage area.” I’ve been through 16 years of education and never heard once that word. I thought it was another 21st century made up word like “fantastical” ...everybody’s adding “ical” on the end of every adjective.

Only thing I would do differently is added two more containers. Two containers stacked on top one another, one buried like a basement. I would have placed it where the "back door" is going to be, in the center of your existing containers. Entering the one above ground from your existing containers would be similar to a brick and mortar "Tri level" home... A couple steps down to enter into the "new" container. Maybe a sweet ass spiral stair case to enter the basement? I just think it would have been cool to have a "safe spot" in case of a tornado or whatever. Not only that but, the one buried would stay a constant temperature and you could use it to store food or... Whatever you're hearts desired. If you ever decide you want to add another container or two in the future, it's a thought for ya's to consider. I wish you both nothing but, the best with whatever the future brings ya's. Thanks for the interesting/informative & entertaining content!
WISH WE WOULD'VE KNOWN THIS BEFORE WE STARTED...
