I've been patiently waiting for an 8m Strike for months. The day finally came over a month ago, but it took me until now to get a few sessions on it, and now I feel like I can do a proper review. A year ago I would have said there was no way I was going to get something over 6m. Look at me now! I'm riding an 8m and I'm stoked I got it.
Please note: this is a wing designed to harness low winds, and also for bigger wingers who need a little more power. I didn’t have super low winds in the session I had to review this wing. So you get what I got, it is what it is ;)
Huge thanks to my wing dealer, Phil from Kitesite.net. Consider talking to him when buying any wing, kite, windsurf or surf stuff, located near West Dennis Beach, Cape Cod Massachusetts @Kitesite.net ‪@FONECULTURE‬

Nice review. I own this wing as well. It is basically the answer to light wind foiling. I can routinely get up in 10-11 mph wind (with a 2140cm front foil). As some mentioned, it is helpful to have a harness when wind picks up. I also see you getting backwinded, def a problem with such a large wing and when jibing, or flagging you can go so slow in light wind that apparent wind obviously reverses unless wing is totally flat. Prob the same with all giant wings, but be prepared to foil in almost no wind so this will happen a lot when going downwind.

yeah I totally agree. I have used with my HA1325 and if I can't get up with that, I'm not really interested in being out. but the 1325 can go fast so as long as I'm up it creates a decent amount of apparent wind. I've ridden that thing super lit before, and it doesn't scare me but I do feel like the fabric has gotten blown out a little from riding it overpowered a bunch of times. and yeah, with the drift I know I need to keep the wing low, but I've ran that thing over multiple times in a wave, very easy to do. there's a lot of stuff going on in light wind winging, especially if you add some swell to the mix!

Haha yeah I’ve never used a harness. I’m not really into them, except I have considered them for winter riding and that may happen this year. I’ve never had a problem holding the 8m, although I’ve had it out over 30 and that does get tiring but I’m not sure if I’d ride a harness when that lit up. I totally get that it’s must be nice to let your body take the load like when windsurfing. I’ll give it a try soon.

I think they sprinkled pixie dust on this thing. I know two guys who have pre-orded this wing while watching me tool around while they glared at me from the beach. I'm 5'7 and this wing taught me how to properly jibe. Today I got lazy while pumping up and dragged half the wing in the water and still made it up. I have Armstrong and Cabrinha Mantis Wings and this is easily the most balanced wing I own. I honestly feel like I'm cheating when I ride. This wing made me an Fone fanboy. Anway, great review!

Nice review man! I currently ride PPC and blue planet wings with my largest being a 4.8m. A good riding buddy just recently got a 7m CWC and it's a game changer. I can match him for lightwind days with my 4.8 if I put on a lifty foil, but I get up on foil sounding like I've just run a marathon after pumping my ass off and he glides up easy peasy, I'll be barely able to stay on foil and he can ride around easilly. I've ridden it, and it definitely makes lightwind days soo much more enjoyable. We are getting up and riding in as little as 6knts which is perfect as we get a lot of fickle wind here in Auckland NZ. I'll be getting my own 7m as soon as I've got the funds, I've contemplated the 8m but it does just seem like thats slipped over the tipping point, your review has made me reconsider it though as it seemed pretty well behaved and easy to use. Keep up the cool videos dude! PS, the floppy handles do kinda suck, I find even in moderate wind I had to move my hands quite far back on the rear handle and because of the looseness of the handle it was like trying to hold onto a taught rope lengthwise which is pretty uncomfortable over time, I think the flysurfer style handles with the discreet lumps/notches would be better if they are to continue with the loose soft handles. The Blueplanet Alien wing handles are awesome, long like the F-one but more taught and also more structure so easier to hold onto without losing the ability to fine tune hand position, and also a centre handle which means you can actually ride one handed and rest an arm while cruising!

Thanks bud, and hello NZ!! Yeah I'm sure I'll be exploring my low end again this summer, but after a few years of winging I'm so sick of pumping and it tires me out so quick, thus the 8m just pulls me right up, gotta love that. especially in the winter, and also with sinker boards. I don't know much about the Blue Planet boards... I gotta check them out. And yeah, I totally get it with the handles. I feel like I was finally able to express my opinion in this vid, I really want people to give them a second chance cause I feel like there's a higher level you can unlock if you give them a chance. but they simply cannot be good for everyone, and a lot of the features of the Flysurfer and Blueplanet wings sound really nice. Flysurfer is another brand we never see around here unless it's a foil kite. Thanks for the comment bud! Keep in touch and I wish you an awesome day!

Yo dude! I think it depends on how you wanna build your quiver. A Strike CWC 6, 7, or 8 would be a huge upgrade from the Swing... not just for lighter winds. If you replaced the 6m you'd be stoked. but like a 5 & 7 quiver would would be pretty sweet. Mojo Flysurfer has the best handles. They have little knobs in them so that you can wrap your fingertips on them and your hand doesn’t slip. The CWC handles are far apart. I wish they had a middle handle. My review of the 8m CWC is that it’s not that much fun to use because it’s so big but you need it as a backup for when the wind drops. I like the ocean rodeo Aluula wings even though they cost a fortune. Super stiff and they pump up quickly. My 5m has plenty of power and I’m over 225 pounds with all my gear. Looking to try the new Duotone Aluula Unit.

sup bud! I still haven't been under a mojo... on the list, a friend of mine has one and loves it. I didn't know about the knob thing, totally intriguing and I'll check it out. yeah, I can totally see how the handles seem too far apart, especially with the 8m. I do have wide shoulders, but it's noticeable. I get why they do it so I don't mind. If there was a middle handle, the balance of load in your arms would be way off so one arm would get way more worked than the other. I actually tend to dislike middle handles - I've only found a few wings where they "worked" for me and otherwise they just get in my way when I grab them by accident. I have never ridden an Aluula wing. I can imagine they are pretty sweet. I do feel like I spend a lot on winging but that's just too much for me. I'm hoping I can try one of my friend's soon!. great to hear from you Jake, have an awesome day!

Yes the Mojo knobs are nice. They also give you a center handle and three handles on the leading edge all with rubber knobs. What all of that adds up to is a lot of extra weight that the F-One cuts out. They have done an amazing job of creating a light, responsive, relatively durable wing.

@OCEANBOUND1

I don't actually know that. I know at least until this year, the 8m and the 5m had the same wingspan, as did the 6m and the 7m. all the extra m goes out the back. the wing is relatively dihedral so tip to tip would be different if it was inflated vs deflated.

I was out yesterday in waves and it was so nice being on the 925 in waves but still had all the speed and nimble-ness of a smaller foil. My HA925 is my go-to for sure these days. Very nice review if you want to know how the f-one cwc 8m performs in medium winds but to be honest with you, the purpose of an 8m wing is to be able to wing in light winds. There are plenty of smaller wings that are great in medium winds that are a lot handier and cheaper than an 8m wing. It's kind of like reviewing a Ferrari and spending the whole time discussing it's trunk space. You don't buy a Ferrari for it's trunk space the same way you don't buy an 8m wing for it's ability in medium wind.

I love my CWC 8m, such a great wing - has converted me to F-One to get a Strike V2 5.5m as well. I regularly have had mine out in sub 10kts, it's an amazing wing to pump and a big improvement on other large wings I've used. I was a bit confused by why you are pulling your front arm in when going upwind. When tying to go high upwind you would push your front arm away from you as far as possible to open the leading edge out to the wind and pull in the back hand as far as possible, pulling your front arm in would just stall the wing and cause it to backwind surely? I agree with you on the handles, people comment on them being loose but I don't find it causes me any problems at all, I'm still on foil when they aren't so clearly it isn't causing a problem. I also give the strut a shove in gybes - just makes it easier to get it round.

I agree with you on the upwind part. Btw: does the 8m allow a better upwind angle than your V2 5.5m? I have the 6m CWC and am not so impressed by its upwind ability. It's okay but I wonder whether the Strike V2 is better at it?

@@stkl23 only had one session on the 5.5 strike v2 but it was a beast going upwind and let me run some crazy angles, so I've been very impressed with it so far. I think the 8m is just restricted a little more on upwind due to it's size.
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ashley, great to hear from you! I know I'll explore sub-10knts this year, but not saying I'm stoked about it :P You know, it's hard to explain the front hand thing. I talked about it on camera during the sesh, and made notes after, but during the editing process I was def thinking all that over and wondering if that "method" would continue or if it was just me being new to the wing. I think those two sessions it was averaging mid 20s and gusting higher. So it could have been because of being totally lit. I was trying to crank upwind in those conditions, and my back arm had to be pretty flagged out cause of the power I had. So letting my front hand out would power me up more and pull me downwind at the same time. So I kept it close, and my arm was bent so it was really working my grip/forearms. I feel like if you let your front hand out when trying to go upwind it wouldn't be the most efficient, a lot has to depend on the angle upwind you are trying to go. And I think you could backwind the wing after a point, but since the 8m is so big, you can really use the trailing edge to push you forward. It's really hard to explain. let me get more sessions on it and get back to you! I think maybe we are both right, it just depends on the circumstances. I'm glad you dig the handles too! thanks for that :) and thanks for your comment! I'm not sure where you are located but I wish you and awesome day and stay in touch!

@@stkl23 That's hard to say for me so far, I've only had 2 sessions on the 5.5m but it seems like they go upwind better than the V1s, and I feel like the CWCs are closer to a V1 than the V2s for going upwind. the F-Ones have felt less powerful than other brands up until the v2, I think this one rides a little more powerful.

@@OCEANBOUND1 Hi Jeremy - thanks for the answer. Yeah that is probably something to do with being super powered up. I think we are probably power opposites here because I will be trying to change down to something smaller when the 8m gets powered up as I'm not keen on winging totally lit - where as I know from previous videos you like to be powered up. So I probably never experience this situation. I'm based in Southampton in the UK - we a have good group of wingers of all levels. Keep up the content - regular viewer here :)

The handles do take some adjustment after coming from something more rigid. Overall I really like the comfort and reduced weight. My one remaining frustration is that the straps have loosened inside the fabric and they slide and roll around some inside that outer sleeve. I’m considering sewing a seam right through the whole thing to tighten things back up. I wonder if someone has tried this before?

What's up bud! I totally agree with everything you said. I still love the F-One handles, especially the feel and diameter, but I also have noticed that the inside part seems to slide a little or become unattached, especially on my 8m which makes it a little weird and sometimes I feel like I'm gonna rip the handle of the strut. Not a bad idea to sew it in there, I'm not sure why it's not. Let me know how that goes, and I wish you an awesome weekend ahead!

Thanks for the review Jeremy. I'm trying to figure out what setup to get to learn and grow on. I'm a 175# kiter, and in excellent conditions (let's say consistently 20kt and above) I'll make the trip to a spot where I can kite. But in lower winds, or if I don't have the time and I want to hit my local spot (with no beach for launching) I'd like to be able to wing. I'm thinking an infinity 84 for a foil, but for a wing I could try a 5m and learn in stronger winds, and eventually get a 7m as well for very light winds, or just go with a 6m and have that be my one wing (Let's say a regular F-one Strike to keep things simple). What do you think?

Hey bud! For learning, big wings are great. We are pretty close weight-wise, I think a 6m is great to learn with but if you consistent have over 20 knots then a 5m could be ok. Loving your videos Jeremy. As a new foiler looking to get started in flat water in light winds (6-12 knots) do you recommend an 8 meter cwc and a 1700 cm foil or a 5.5/ 6 meter wing and a 2000 plus cm foil? I am 6’2” and 170 lbs. thanks man. Hope to ride as good as you one day soon
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 жыл бұрын
What up Neil? Good to hear from you. An interesting problem you presented. You have multiple ways to play this. I’m about 170lbs fyi so we are close. So the 8m should technically get you out in the lowest, as stated on their website. And it has a really wide range, but most people would prefer not to ride over 20knots. Having power in your hands is great for learning, and since the hand-pumping is what usually makes you more tired, it should mean you save some energy. But the 8m is big, no lie there. We didn’t have anything over 6m until this past year and we all got along fine. So you could easily make the 6m work, and get a big foil. I kind of lean towards this for beginners, as getting you up quick and also having the stability in the beginning is pretty clutch. You don’t need speed in the first few months, you need to learn to jibe and switch your feet. Then you can think about your style and what your #2 foil will be - smaller version, or high aspect. I would not recommend high aspect foils to beginners. For whatever’s worth, my friend has a 7m and a 6m CWC and prefers the 7m, and then his next size is a 5m. It’s good to space them apart by 2m. You could easily go 8m and 5.5m, even those have overlap. The 5.5m is more fun to fly, but the CWC are a little more rigid too and obviously made for light wind. That’s a lot of stuff I threw out there, in the end you can’t go wrong really. But I’d lean towards recommending a large foil and then a 6m or a 7m as your first wing. You’d be fine with the 6m in most situations, although I just don’t know 1st hand about your local wind conditions. Let me know if you have any other questions! And enjoy the journey ahead!!

I have not measured the wingtips, but I’m pretty sure the whole thing about all the CWC wings is that they are the same wingspan as the 5.5m. Held up good, the canopy def got bagged out but I rode it a lot kinda lit up and it does have a lot more fabric that could potentially get stretched than a smaller wing. Nice review, I had the same for 2 years and enjoyed a lot here in Dubai, could use it every week end. Then bought the v3 version 7m and 9m. 9 is too extreme and heavy and 7 is not enough. May I ask where your spot is, looks like it’s a cold place.thx

Thanks bud! Yeah I miss the v1/v2… I wasn’t a fan of the v3 as they killed all the lightness that made them so special. I really hated how the trailing edge of the wing felt so heavy, it sucked at light wind drifting. Plus they went with a heavier canopy material 🤯 not sure what they were thinking. Maybe the v4 will be back. I doubt I’ll try one. I haven’t used my 7m Ventis since I bought my DW board… so I’m either making the 5-5.5 work in light winds now or I’m just paddling when that light. I’m in Boston! And yup, it gets cold up here for sure!! Although today it’s over 90F 🥵 Thanks for watching and I wish you an awesome day!!

Hello @Oceanbound, can you help me with 2 questions please? how tall are you and do you know the wingspan measurement? I'm 5'10" and am concerned it's too big. Thanks!

Sup bud! I’m 5’11ish. The v1 or v2 you’d be totally fine IMO. I haven’t tried the v3, but the canopy is different and you may find yourself running into the corner a little… I find that on the 5.5m but haven’t ridden a new CWC. I don’t know the actual wingspan… I saw someone post it in the last few weeks on an FOne thread on FB. But the thing with the CWC (at least with the v2s) is that it’s the same wingspan is the same as the 5.5m, whether it’s the 6m or the 8m. Let me know what you get!

@@sveng8654 yeah no prob! At least that was the case with the first versions, and why they are called CWC or Compact Wing Concept. The extra meters go further out the back.

What do you think the cwc 5.5 wind sweetspot is?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, sorry I just saw this. I think there are a lot of factors to consider… board, foil type, wind… I’ve been riding it from 16-30+ and it’s all good with my 75L, but the sinker it’s ok with a big foil but otherwise I kinda ride it mid-20s without much pumping and effort. The 5.5m is not a CWC, the first CWC is a 6m, and they have a 7m and 8m. The 5.5 only has the center strut. I feel like the upwind performance has improved with the v2 and I just love the way they ride all around. I’ve ridden more powerful wings but I prefer the FOne in all situations. It’s easy, and high performing at the same time. Thanks for the comment and I wish you an awesome day bud!!

Awesome video! Dude I'm a beginner started my first session on fone swing 5m and got up on the foil. Learned how to pump. But we have little wind here in Sweden. Usually 10knts. Can I go out as a beginner with my 8m or should I wait? I guess I will damage it more when I'm a beginner. It costed a lot 😑

Sup Kalle! Welcome to the wonderful world of winging 🤙😜 if you have the 8m, might as well use it. I always tell people you need to figure out your low end with your gear and skill. You may try at 10knts and it doesn’t work but 11knts it does. So eventually you just don’t go out when it’s too light, cause you are only gonna work out your arms until they wanna fall off. That does take a little time though. So I’ve fallen on my 8m before, and I see that’s prolly where I would break it. I fall on it when I do a downwind jibe and my speed is faster than what the wing wants to drift (light winds) and I kinda end up running over the wing. I’ve done that a few times. I think that’s where you’d most likely break your wing, and you can avoid that. Like in light winds, maybe come down off foil when going to switch directions. The 8m pumps differently but once you are up, it’s really nice to feel the extra power than your 5m would have. So you shouldn’t just let it sit there when you could use it. You can always buy some sail tape. It sucks to put holes in your wings but just be ready to repair it and move on. Most of my wings have had holes from some stupid thing, usually before a sesh like while walking to the water. Or getting past shorebreak. It happens. Stoked for you bud! Let me know how it goes, and hello to Sweden!!

Tried to watch this video, and more importantly to listen to it. Someone has edited incredibly annoying out of tune piano music over the top of the reviewers vocal audio track, so I had to quit at the 9 minute mark. Otherwise, good work and thanks.

Sup bud! That someone is me! Sorry you weren’t into the music. Videos like this I try to pick some minimal/lofi hip hop as a backing track and I usually start with reducing it by at least 14db. I’m an audio guy, so it’s important to me to not have the music be annoying. But I’m also human and usually have less than a week to work on each of these videos on top of everything else going on, so they aren’t as polished as I wish they could be. It’s been an awesome lesson of constantly letting go and moving on. So while I’m bummed about your experience, I’m stoked you watched some of the video. 9min is more than the average view. Points taken about the audio, I really do appreciate the feedback, it’s a great reminder. And I wish you an awesome weekend out there wherever you are!
