@OCEANBOUND1 qq: all tbinfs being equal, if you were going to get one of these SK8s as a daily driver, knowing youd be in some big swell occasionally, do you think the 850 is the size you'd go with?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 Күн бұрын
that's a tough question, but for me I'd say the 850. it seems to go fast enough to keep up with groundswell, still turns and carves beautifully. I know that 750 would be totally awesome but there would be some days where it'd feel kinda small. my friend bought a 750 as his one sk8 and he doesn't use it as much as he thought. I think if he got the 850 he would be out on it more. if all goes well, I should have the 1150 to demo in the next month, stay tuned!

Good video. Like the others I am quite interested in learning back pass tack. How much of the challenge was just getting used to waist leash vs wrist? Would love a video on your experience learning the back pass tack or just your tips having learned it. Also curious about the 85 ml. But just spent my money on 80fg at 93 kg. Primarily wing on 107 dw and love it for Alaska. Because I can’t count on the wind to always be consistent and do more slogging than I like. 80 is for storms here or travel to destinations with reliable wind like La ventana. Will you stop using fg?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 2 күн бұрын
sup bud! still learning! I tried like in an earlier session like 3 times, but this sesh I tried maybe 40-50 of them. so this is pretty much the first session. I ended up making over 50% of them, way more near the end for sure but I think I nailed my first 2 or 3 in a row. I haven't watched any how-to videos on them, so maybe I'm missing technique, but for me the most awkward part was grabbing the wing with the second hand and lifting it back up. you could definitely practice the pass on land to get some feel for it. but nothing beats actually doing it cause there's more going on in the maneuver than a regular tack and you just need to get used to it. getting used to the wing leash change wasn't that big of an issue, but sometimes it can get annoying cause I find the wing leash migrates under my knees when I'm getting back up. but I'm getting used to moving it out of the way every time. that is the worst of it, and I don't see any other issues, so it's not that bad. will I stop using the FG? probably. I bought the 75L so it could replace my v1 75L FG. I almost bought a v2 70 FG and then these ML's came out. It's cracked so many times and in different places, my new goal is to drill some holes in the back to try to let water out, I'm so curious if it's holding water or not. after that I may just plug it up and either pass it on to a new guy for like $200 or donate it to a community boating program. unless my son gets interest in the next few months. I'm not in a rush to get rid of it but the ML gets up to speed faster and I don't mind the extra length so that's gonna be my daily driver. thanks bud, I wish you an awesome day up in Alaska! fingers crossed I get to wing up there some day!
@AkSeapilot

@@OCEANBOUND1 great job in your progression and thanks for the feedback and tips. I didn’t get past all the tangling because I’m so used to using wrist leash now. But I started on a waste leash so I’m sure I could get that figured out sooner or later. I had an interesting path in that it took me two years to get my first jibes. And first day on heel side tacks then figured out toe side. Then lost heel side on my bad side. The end game on the back pass would be just what you said. Someday tacking onto a wave or wake and surfing out of it. Inspired by your video. Let me know when u decide to come to Alaska. Skagway was 37 knots yesterday. All day at least 25-30.

@@cheynedowsett hi!! I’m on my 3rd fuse in going on 4 years. So I upgraded to the v2 as soon as it came out, and then just upgraded again. My second post to this video, last time I'd made my own mast but this time I tested my latest wing design and it's got a lot in common with many of these new generation surf agility wings. Mine is probably even more springy with my Aliexpress carbon fire unidirectional and locally sourced double bias and my wing tips are even thinner. Only had the one ride of my newest wing so far but it is like I'm on shock absorbers gybing around in the trough of a wave with cross chop in it so I can really relate to this review of the SK8, the smoothness from tip flex. I think my tip flex steals a little bit of my glide performance but I wouldn't change it, it's freaking awesome. I've got a bit more sweepback than the SK8 too, 4 years spitting out the ocasional burst of designs and I've got a much better idea of how to get just the performance I want now.

Be interested to hear a bit more about the swing. Based on what you said it doesn’t sound like a massive step forward. Would the origin still be your pick? I’m on strike v3s and was initially disappointed after v2. Then I got used to them but was half looking for an upgrade. Now though, a year they have sort of stretched into a new wing that I like way more. Inflated to just 7.5 to 8 psi they’re like more powerful, softer v3 but still with better top end, upwind and flagging than a v2.
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 16 күн бұрын
It's better than the v3, but I only had 2 or 3 sessions on that one as well. they reduced the size of that heavy load diffuser in the trailing edge, so it has a little better drift in light winds but I feel the v2 was better. I think I'd lean towards the Swing but I'd love to try them back-to-back. I think the Origin is the lightest and cheapest so those are huge factors to me. And it feels more like a v1 or v2 Strike. I could be happy with either! I rode my 5.5m v3 Strike the other day, it's still super annoying running over those wingtips in lighter winds. and the canopy is so loose, it's def a different wing than it was when I got it but I don't love it's direction. I think they are getting better though! I'd give the v4's a chance. demo one if you can!

My hand also slipped on the f-ones ...so will be interesting to see the fone hard handles in action thx bud - have a wonderful week

Sup bud! The 4.5m is a hard size to judge when underpowered. It is super light, and better than the v3 that had a really heavy trailing edge. I’m still against the load diffuser, it seems that alone has killed its drift but the v4 load diffuser is def smaller. Stoked to try the new handles! Sounds like they can send me some in July, so stay tuned for more! Thanks always for the comment, I wish you an awesome rest of your weekend!

Great video. I have a V1 Mantis 6m and a V2 Mantis 5m. The 6m is great, sometimes a bit wild if your way out of the wing range (~35kt+) The V2 5m can be a bit squirrely and seems to like to flip over when you crash. I put both through rough conditions (winter winging on ice/snow) and heavy winds/ concrete/ plowing through trees getting to the lake and no issues with build so far. That double connection hose looks nice for inflating quicker but personally would love to see two separate bladders and inflation valves one for the strut and leading edge. *I agree those bags are great I shove both wings in a single bag.

Sup bud! I haven’t handles a v2 or v1, but I think they fixed the squirrelly-ness in the v3. And I dont think it flips a ton but I do always try to keep them close so they don’t flip. So upgrading to a v3 is probably worth it, even if it’s just for the handles. And not super expensive either. I def respect that. Hope all is well bud!

I started using my smaller foil (still large) after seeing you on 800s and its been great! Moved from a 1650ma/surf? to 1350ma and I've progressed so much even after one session. I was worried it was going to be hard to get up, especially inland where its usually 9kt/30kt gust - but It seems the larger foils I have can act as brakes sometimes and this just pumps up like nothing. Cant wait to try smaller foils like this one.

Sweet! Not all foils are the same but most newer foils seem to have potential for more of us to have fun at smaller sizes. The new Armie HAs I ride have a lot of lift, these Eagle HAs have more speed… so there’s always a give and take but in general, smaller is always more fun if you can make it work! Stoked you are moving down in size, and I loved MA wings cause they kinda have a little of everything. Hoping all is well, and I wish you an awesome weekend!!

Had one session on the EagleX 700, and it was insane. Coming from a Eagle 790 as my daily driver, the EagleX took just a little more to get going, but not much. The wing really shined in the swells, I was outrunning bumps super easy so could just keep going. When I was powered up I could probably just keep pushing the foil for more speed. If you can get your hands on one, deff try it out.

Sup bud!! I totally agree, the thing shines on swell. And I didn’t have anything besides wind swell but it put a smile on my on my face. Must be sweet for some fast and larger groundswell. I’d prolly want that 700 in my wing quiver. I bet it’s pretty fun to turn on more powerful waves. Let me see what I can do I’ll I maybe be able to try a smaller size. Thanks bud, I wish you an awesome weekend!!

Hi Jeremy! I had the x 800 under my feet for just 15 min. And even in lightest winds (I had an 8qm) it was awesome. I had the same impression about the speed. It felt like 5mph plus in base speed. But still very stable. But well. Got to check it again. Rail to rail wasn’t comparable to my sk8. But the glide was insane. The winglets still scare me to hell. And once you lose them you won’t sell the wing at a decent price. That’s a pitty. Have fun man!

Sweet you got to try it! I would def want at least one in my quiver, mostly for the speed and glide. I’d love to try a sk8 and one of these kinda back-to-back to feel the difference. I like them both but I’d love to know what one I’d gravitate to these days if I had to pick one. I hope yr season is going well bud! Full send and I wish you an awesome weekend!$

There are many people chopping them off on the regular eagle versions and report no much difference in performance and in some ways the improved aspect is it “vibrates” less when passing through the white wash

What is your biggest foil? What is your low end setup?
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 17 күн бұрын
My usual low end ride is the HA880, that’s pretty easy to pump up in light wind. but I can go out with my HA1180 to in lighter stuff, I just rarely do. Im not so much of a super light wind winger anymore… I don’t really think about going out under 12mph cause I’m happy to paddle up to that.

@@OCEANBOUND1I read that you changed armies fuses regularly due to wear, does this always happen? Can you prevent it or do they warranty it? I want to swap to armie to try the new ha but don't want to replace fuses, cheers

What is your weight…? Thinking HA 780 do to weighing 82kgs or 180lbs. Any thought on weight being an issue and choosing from this range. 680-880
@OCEANBOUND1
@OCEANBOUND1 19 күн бұрын
Around 77kg or a little under 170. So the 780 would be a great one-foil quiver. You could always then go down to a 580 if you wanted something smaller/faster. Or, you could do 680/880 and be happy with those 2.

Nice review, I had the same for 2 years and enjoyed a lot here in Dubai, could use it every week end. Then bought the v3 version 7m and 9m. 9 is too extreme and heavy and 7 is not enough. May I ask where your spot is, looks like it’s a cold place.thx

Thanks bud! Yeah I miss the v1/v2… I wasn’t a fan of the v3 as they killed all the lightness that made them so special. I really hated how the trailing edge of the wing felt so heavy, it sucked at light wind drifting. Plus they went with a heavier canopy material 🤯 not sure what they were thinking. Maybe the v4 will be back. I doubt I’ll try one. I haven’t used my 7m Ventis since I bought my DW board… so I’m either making the 5-5.5 work in light winds now or I’m just paddling when that light. I’m in Boston! And yup, it gets cold up here for sure!! Although today it’s over 90F 🥵 Thanks for watching and I wish you an awesome day!!

Great review! I've been the biggest Mantis fanboy. Owned V1, V2, and V3 but after multiple cracked inflation valves I'll never buy another. Almost everyone in PCB rode Cabrinha, we've all had valve issues, almost everyone has switched brands now.

Right on bud! I haven’t had that happen. did it happen on different versions or mostly the v3? I did have some issues with my v3 but Cabrinha took care of them.

Thanks so much Chris! Yeah a 3m-4m would def get a lot of use for me… kinda over the big wings and starting to size down more with the DW board and decent front foils. Hope all is well bud and sending windy thoughts your way!
