Finally new trolleybus overhead wire switches have been installed in Riga, Latvia! Trolleybus contact wires are crucial part of the system, and they have been a weak spot - trolleybuses had to slow down in order to proceed through the catenary switches. New modern trolleybus catenary switches are capable of ensuring the high operating speed. In this video, we explore first new trolleybus contact wire switches that have been installed in 2023 in Riga, Latvia. Trolleybuses seen on the video are Škoda 24Tr Irisbus and Škoda 27Tr Solaris. Trolleybuses of Riga are operated by Rigas Satiksme. This 4K UHD video has been filmed in 2023.

Yeah, that's pretty dang fast! SF catenary busses pop loose at way slower speeds than that.

Well, only these 5 new switches allow such speed to be maintain while passing. We have older ones that require slow speed, similar to SF, TBH.

Это зависит от конструкции разворотного устройства. Точнее, от угла поворота. Практически проверено, что через разворотные круги с углом поворота до 10° и переставной крестовиной можно двигаться со скоростью 50 км/ч. It depends on the design of the turnout. More specifically, the angle of the turnout. It has been practically verified that it is possible to operate at a speed of 50 km/h over turnouts with a turning angle of up to 10° and a changeover cross.

Sorry this my seem like a dumb comment but how does the communication for the switch work in this system? I am the most familiar with radio. Also I technical explanation as to how they can handle higher speeds what be nice as well.(They all look the same how is this one able to handle higher speeds?)
@Aviationvlad
@Aviationvlad 5 күн бұрын
There's nothing dumb in your question :) For the time being, these new switches work as follows: there is an indication on a display (somewhere near the switch itself) that shows to the driver, to which direction is the switch currently pointing (like, to the right, or to the left). If the indication is pointing to the right, and that is where driver needs to go, then he/she does not need to make any actions - trolleybus just passes through the switch and that's it. But if the current direction does not correspond to the required one (for example, the switch is set to "right", but the driver needs to go to the "left" direction, then the driver needs to change it by pressing (i am not sure, whether he needs to hold it as well) a button while the trolley poles are passing the sensors that are located some 20-30 meters before the switch itself. In other cities sometimes the radio communication is used to do that. But as far as I know, this might (not saying that it will) be challenging in Riga, as we have a very busy trolleybus traffic on some of the streets in Riga and we would like to avoid cases, then a trolleybus driver pushes the button and changes the direction of the switch while a trolleybus ahead is proceeding through it. This is how the new switches work in Riga. The old soviet-style switches by default ae set to the "right", and if the driver needs to go left, then he uses the same button while the trolleybus is passing through the switch with a pole. Years ago, older Škoda trolleybuses did not have that button, so drivers needed to make a closed circuit to go "to the left" (in simple words, they needed to make the trolleybus to accelerate while passing through the switch).

@Aviationvlad
@Aviationvlad 29 күн бұрын

horrible , why drivers move so slow on that swiches.... On the most i see can move faster that 35km/h . Also technicly on Electroline parts can move around 50km/h

Yes, but network around switch not so good and speed for good contactor operation is not more than 35km/h. Switch have drive by current.

@@Aviationvlad 0:00-4:27 wires switches , not installed properly , the angle through which the separation of the contact wire is passed is too large, the following network holders or knives are too close, therefore the angles are large and the real driving speed is maybe up to 35-40km/h, although if technically properly installed it would be possible to drive 50-60km/h
@Aviationvlad
@Aviationvlad Ай бұрын
@@MrGintaras Oh ok, I see your point. That makes sense actually. Thus, new switches are placed pretty much in the same locations where the old ones were (without shifting even 20m), which in some cases is not optimum solution.

@@Aviationvlad only last duble wire switch is good , knives are about 15m from switch and 5° . So possible to move around 50km/h

@@MrGintaras May be one day we will... Yesterday, I took a trolleybus on line 19, and when passing that (last) switch, driver slowed down to some 15-20km/h. I don't think that it's being asked to go faster that through old switches (like, you can do it, but you don't have to)..
