The Poet and the Pendulum was written after firing Tarja the original singer. She was the face of Nightwish at the time, and Tuomas wrote this and considered her a muse to many of the songs he had written at that point. They had also grown up in the same city and knew each other since early childhood. All the band members decided together to fire her for acting too much of a diva And her husband & Manager was stepping way outta bounds concerning the band business He always wanted more money , only big paying show but the band did it for the love of music and there fans . According to all the band members, Tarja was missing lots of rehearsals and would not even travel with the band anymore. Tuomas was painted as the devil by many fans, and went through a deep depression. He even considered ending the band . He wrote The Poet and the Pendulum at that time, and actually kills himself in the song. He said he killed himself in the song at the 10:00 time stamp , as to kill the pain he was going through . To this day every time he plays it, it takes him back to those feelings, and shows on his face. In the last part, Mother and Father, words are said to him that his real mother said to him at that time of his deep depression. One part that touches me at the end when the guitarist Emppu and bassist Marko, the only other two involved with firing Tarja (that were still active with the band at the time of this show )were standing with Tuomas at the end in solidarity and love., NOTE : the 1st two words are (The End) and the last two words are (The Beginning) representing the end of the 1st era of Nightwish and the beginning of the next era
@treintje1001
@treintje1001 Жыл бұрын
No, the words ‘The End’ and ‘The Beginning’ represent exactly what they are meant to represent, which is literally the beginning and the end of the story. The Beginning literally means: ‘This is where the story begins.’ The end is simply the end of the story. When you look at it that way you will quickly realize that the story is actually being told in reverse order. The storytelling starts at the end, with a simple recap: the songwriter is dead, end of story. If you read the lyrics closely, you will find that the last part (mother and father) is the only part in the song where the songwriter is still alive. ‘The blade will keep on descending’, which implies that it hasn’t fallen yet. It falls at the end of the preceeding part, followed by the fading heartbeat. That part (Dark passion play) is telling how everyone is happy that he is dead, “The world will rejoyce today, as the crows feast on the rotting poet”. He is in hell, serves him well, and no one is there to bury him. His friends spit on his grave. How much more reference to the hate that he got from the fans do you need? Really, the story is being told in backward order, and The End and The Beginning literally mean end and beginning of the storytelling.

I would only add that tarja had announced that she was leaving the band after the next album. So they just accelerated her departure, she was leaving anyways!!!

NightWish Army Wisconsin Chapter here. Only Tuomas’s pain can be translated into, what I think, is the GREATEST song ever composed! The world can not understand just how amazing Tuomas’s genius is. CLEARLY the GREATEST composer of our generation, reaching a level only seen by Mozart, Bach and Beethoven. ❤🤘

For me, the true brilliance of this masterpiece is that anyone who's ever suffered from depression can relate to it, even without knowing the circumstances behind its composition. It's not just about Tuomas. It's about all of us who have been there at our absolute lowest. And it's a reminder that even at our lowest, there is still hope.

Tuomas is one of the greatest (if not the greatest) storytellers and English is not his native language, yet he writes such amazing beautiful and deep lyrics. This is unbelievable. Tuomas is a gem to this world. Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece 😊 I feel that Tuomas sadness and depression wasn’t just from losing his muse, but losing his life’s work. All his songs had been written for Tarja and who else could possibly match her? I did like Anette and she was good for NW, but she could never possibly match her, I feel his happiness with having Floor in the band. Being an Empath Floor never looked at Tuomas, because she says that she would lose it. I really did. Luv it, that Emppu and Marko did check on Tuomas several times in this song. Tuomas and Floor are super sensitive empathy so no wonder the emotions just ooze out. Only Floor could sing this song with such empathy. She is the best thing that happened to Nightwish, but I still miss Marko.

Greetings from the UK again. Well done for the reaction. Not only the lyrics from Tuomas but add in Floor's fabulous vocals and you have a composition that I think should be compulsory listening for anyone who says they are interested in music. Absolutely brilliant. I have heard this many times now and I don't mind admitting it still reduces me to tears. My excuse is old age has finally arrived (mid 70's). I just consider myself to be so lucky to be around at this time and be able to hear music like this. Thank you to Tuomas, Floor , Marko and the rest of the band pas for making this world just a bit better place

Things most people miss: the music slowly moves back and forth if you’re wearing headphones, it’s subtle but it’s there. Like a pendulum At 10:00 the lyrics saying “now I have 3 minutes and counting”, at 13:00 the eulogy ends and the music comes to a complete stop, Tuomos’ suicide in music.

Yes, part of Tuomas's depression was from losing Tarja, but it was mainly caused by so many "fans" sending him hate mail (re-listen to "Your's Is An Empty Hope"). Some Tarja fans were livid with him for destroying the band. Apparently even the Prime Minister of Finland got in on the discussion!

This song, for me, is one of the big three ("Ghost Love Score" given us by Tarja, "The Poet And The Pendulum" given us by Anette and "The Greatest Show On Earth" given us by Floor), and you are right, for Nightwish fans , this song is the most meaningful... This songs backstory is deep and dark , especially for Tuomas (suicide by song). And yet, Floor took this song to a new astral level (originally sung by Anette). Also I recommend to read "The Pit and The Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe for extra flavor. The reason for Tuomas’ depression was not the firing of Tarja itself, it was what came after that. The fans idolized Tarja and they could not accept the fact that she got fired. In their heads Tarja was the one that made the band famous and they became really angry and hostile, especially towards Tuomas. They really took it out on him. They called him all kinds of ugly things and a lot of them expressed that they did not care if he would die. These are the things that brought him into depression and these are the things that echo through the lyrics. This song has the most emotional impact, at least for me... I was that that "Bastard" who abandoned Nightwish after Tarja left...Never Again !!!! Although I love this song (Especially this version), it is the only song, I can't put to my playlist... because, I break down to tears every single time (Current reaction included...). This masterpiece will remain a reminder to me for my narrow mindlessness... Thank you brother for this well thought out reaction !!!!! NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

Poet and the Pendulum is not a song; its an experience. Possibly the greatest piece of modern music. Toumas is a genius, the sheer raw emotion of the masterpiece pours out of every pore of his being. The band are in fantastic form. The orchestration is simply outstanding capturing the mood and emotion. The lighting and the graphics are simply stunning. It is rare that I am ever moved to tears to any piece of music, however listening to this masterpiece , the tears flow out of me like a baby

Wow, this song stays heavy, even if you heard it 1000 times. It's so good you listened to Master passion Greed (about Marcelo who ruined almost NW) and bye bye beautiful about Tarja. Nightwish means the world to them especially Tuomas. He lost close friends, who betrayed him (Tarja was an old childhood friend but also others who worked in the crew) and tried to protect the other bandmembers by taking the blame. I can't imagine how it must feel if every day the newspapers are filled with filth about you and the band and even politicians speaking out about Tuomas and the band in a bad way. I am so happy that good friend did not leave him alone and motivated him to write all the SH*t on paper to deal with it. Master passion greed is also a song they needed to go on. Yay, you did it. Noe a little break and than: The greatest show of all, based on the books of dr. Dawkins (who is also involved in making this song) Tampere is the most beautiful version, but in Wenbley Dawkins is resent. Still....I would say: Tampere!!! Thank you sir!

No less than a masterpiece, Tuomas has created with this song! There are not many songs with so much personal emotion, which, however, can be understood by others. And this performance with Floor at the microphone, in this arena is just perfect. A very nice detail, which shows very nicely the attention to detail of Tuomas is the lyric line 'Now I only have 3 minutes and counting' just before the 7-minute mark and which part the song reaches exactly after these 3 minutes. 💔 I'm glad he took this step musically and not in reality. I think he has so many more wonderful stories to tell. _____________________ 「 _Look inside the mirror of you. Can you say now is the best of who you are?_ 」- from *Nemophila* - 'RISE' 🎶💮

I love Floor's body language so much, especially in this performance. Even without the words you'd understand. The combination of Tuomas' composition, the music, the symbols in this piece of music, the words, the body language and facial expressions, Floor's voice (!), hit home so hard. You can literally feel the emotional hell Tuomas went through, what the whole band has felt. Emppu and Marko standing with Tuomas, unity of the men who lived through this shared crisis. Not just to support Tuomas. I cry every time I watch this performance, like a baby. I know how it feels when "your friends betray you" and you feel all alone and not loved. When the love of "mother and father" is all you have to keep you hanging in there.

After like 1000 times hearing this song, it still gets me. I have nothing To say or add anymore. It is history. And Tuomas IS NW. Thanks - No 1 !!! Accumulated notes on the song and this performance: Tuomas is a very special person and this is, for me, the pinnacle of his work. Nothing surpasses it. For him it is one of the deepest songs. Quotes from the band on the making of the album and the song... TUOMAS: We will never play "Bye Bye Beautiful" or "Master Passion Greed" live again, [sic] because the lyrics are just too unambiguous and personal. There was at least as much gloom behind "The Poet and the Pendulum", too, but it leaves a bit more room for interpretation. It's easily one of our best songs but especially, the "Mother and Father'" part in the end always stirs up such a storm of emotions that it's impossible for me to do it every night. Playing "The Poet and the Pendulum' is a real rollercoaster ride - it makes me feel anxious, blush, laugh, and, in the end, just happy that that part of my life is behind me. My notes: My number 1 Nightwish song and for good reasons. (No 2, Song of Myself, No 3 7 Days to the Wolves.) This is a deeply emotional and meaningful song with which I empathise and it helped me to see that there was a way forward when depression struck. I am not alone in being "saved" by Nightwish, a fact that Tuomas has referred to and said he could not terminate the band because he knows they have meant so much to some fans who feel their lives have been saved by Nightwish. He feels that he has a responsibility to the fans - not your standard rock musician then. Floor is worth watching closely, her facial, hand and whole-body motions reflect the emotions she is portraying. Hands in Mother and Father for example. Tearing her hair in the Dark Passion Play section. Note that when Tuomas talks about "Poet" he is always referencing himself. It happens throughout his ouvre. You will see other cross-references too. Tuomas does that deliberately to give the fans a sort of anchor. Meadows of Heaven is another example - a song in itself and often referenced. For what it's worth, here are are my thoughts and interpretations... End to beginning - death of one era of the band, beginning of a new era. Regarding the end of the first Era, I see no point in the blame game. The band split, that is all we need to know. Whatever the causes there was bound to be emotion on both sides so I leave it at that. But this masterpiece is what came out of Tuomas' emotions. The beginning is a boy soprano, Guy Elliott who also does the spoken parts. The whispering at the beginning is the central spoken section, but played in reverse. Then we get the whole section "Home". I see the "shoulder cries more" as having no shoulder to cry on because the other members of the band - his friends - were equally upset. The "whore for the cold world" I see as the selling of his whole life to the music industry (the metaphorical pimps, hence the "whore" references) which is not interested in the person, only what they can get from the band. The two faces bit is self explanatory; almost everyone will have been in situations where they have to hide their feelings and present a false front to the world. The reference to betrayal is again obvious and there are lots of metaphors in the surrounding words. The altar I think, is the tie to the band - these upheavals in 2004/5 were not the first time Tuomas had felt like ending the band. By the way, note the 3 minutes and counting: exactly 3 minutes later you get the guillotine motion. By the way, Marco made the demo version of this, with all the lyrics sung by himself and with harsher lyrics at this point too. Next we get to the Mother and Father section with Floor, Marco and Emppu all sitting, while Floor sings lyrics reflecting the words from his mother when he went back home for a break in the middle of all this turmoil. These are the words of love and then of advice, that he was given. Floor here is using her finger movements to accentuate emotion. This whole section and the way Floor sings it, is packed with those damned Onion Ninjas. Marco's harmonies are wonderful. We end with the final ethereal notes from Floor and here is another tingle-factor moment. Then a gentle piano ending, the calm after the emotional storm. Here, as in Sparkle my Scenery, the choir on the original album is replaced by Floor who wanted to sing them herself (and proved completely capable of it) which Anette could not have done - she could probably get the notes but the emotion is there in the choral original and is amplified when Floor sings it. The low brass used in many places is really effective. On the performance itself: When Emppu goes over to Tuomas and later both Marco and Emppu go over, it is a sign of moral support. They both know how difficult this is for him - eventually he had the vocals turned off in his in-ear, so he didn't have to listen to them because Floor put such emotion into them. At the end, she does not say "Thank you" immediately, as she does normally. Instead she looks over for a few seconds to check on him from her position. BTW, I have never bought the theory that Tuomas was "in love" with Tarja. Those who say he asked her to join the band because he knew her from school - she was suggested by Emppu who had known her as an acquaintance at school.

Deep Silent Complete and Walking in the Air are my suggestions.

@Ariasandthenation thank you, you brought tears to my eyes..but it happens every time I listen to this song. You are right, this is a masterpiece of Tuoma's masterpieces ❤️. No one can imagine Tuoma's feelings at that time when the president (or prime minister) of Finland brought up Tarja's dismissal and people hated him. We must be glad that Tuomas committed suicide in his music and not in reality. We are lucky that he is still among us...making new masterpieces. God I love this band ❤❤

🇬🇧 Norfolk: who else but Tuomas could say I only have three minutes and counting then exactly three minutes to the second the blade falls? The riff Marco plays on his solo part without looking is insane ! Have listened to this many times and if you focus on an individual instrument it is mind blowing 😊 The way the band members look out for Tuomas during this performance 😊enjoy

I have the feeling that you had your eyes closed at "the moment suprême " where Tuomas slith his throat, right after what you called an obituary. Exactly 3 minutes after the phrase "now i only have 3 minutes and counting.

Fire Tarja was hard for the Band. But okay for the guys. But after this, Tuomas became so much hate. From Fans and others. A example. He was invited to the finnish Prime Minister. After the open Letter he cancelled it( ok he was a bad ass.)

I've been along for the entire ride. It's awesome seeing someone discover exceptional music. Please consider reviewing Tarja's Shadow Play from Circus Life. Its the show closer and after reviewing the lyrics, it could very well be a response to the Poet. In any case, it's a memorable performance.

This is pretty much the stages of grief and depression in a song. From sorrow to anger, resignation, depression, feeling hopeless, to crawling out of it. I always cry at "...goodnight Kiss for a child in time." We all have times of deep sadness, with everything piling up on us, where we could use a kiss on the forehead from from a parent telling us its going to be ok. And, of course get teary with the message from his parents and Floors gorgeous delivery of the emotions at the end.

i am watching the body laungage of the member like Floor and Tuomas and also you can tell the narrater of the song is in pain both mental and emotinal Floor is tearing at her hair which is a known grief response in older times and as the voice over starts Tuomas turns away from the stage ie the audiance then is at peace towards the end ps smiling in the animal kingdom and in some cases humans is a sign of fear and aggression

Well, you finally got there! This song is a piece of art! Every song ever written is a piece of art - to the artist/writer. Music is an artform in itself. The Nightwish journey is just one avenue through this form of art. I have studied your own transition through the Nightwish tract and realised that you, personally, have found the something special in this phenomenal band. Blessings and felicitations to you, sir. Your reactions are always true, your faith in the band is well founded. You now have your conscription into the Nightwish army. Serve well, friend and always keep the faith. Excellent reaction!
