Man, you're an inspiration for me. It's a stigma that being emotional is 'bad' or 'pathetic' and we need to apologize when we 'get emotional'. It's BS. We get emotional when something MOVES us and that's the most beautiful thing. Wine is part of the culture in my country (France) so I don't see the issue of supporting a mental health cause with wine. I wish you best of luck with Project Dino!

John, brother, you have already succeeded with this venture because you've thought of it and you added going for it. I'm proud of you and your sure your brother and your wider family are too. Sadly I have experienced suicide in my life and even been in a position where it was on the table for me. What saved me? Men like you. Men who worked with a men's suicide prevention charity as volunteers. One of my proudest moments was a year later, the guy who ran the group asked me to come on board and help run it. What a wonderful opportunity to give back and to help others. If we are lucky, we get to experience and learn and grow as humans and men and then we get to give back and help other men. If you are ever able to ship to the UK, post up about it as I'm partial to a vino and is like to support your venture. (and Pinot Noir is also my favourite red 😁).

So, what’s the GOAL? To be super successful financially? To just have this business to remember/honor your brother? To make this your “day job”? To produce a superior wine/product? I’d love to know how a business makes money in California. Taxes are high, regulations are ridiculous, you already spoke about the state costs for labels. It’s outrageous. What’s that old joke winemakers have… How do you make a small fortune in wine? Start with a large fortune. J/k of course, but the business of wine challenging for sure. I am on several wine mailing lists and have felt a kinship with many wineries, some of which post content or have amazing emails to keep the interest going. My first thought would be instead of walling of the wine content in a Patreon membership, why not just create (and link to) a second wine content channel and offer a Patreon membership for those so inclined. It may turn out the wine channel drives traffic to the over40 channel. Whatever you decide to do, I will look to joining your mailing list and support your effort to honor your brother Dino.

My humble advice would be to simply start off small and grow as the business grows. Sell in California since you're based there, and according to Statista for 2021, they consume more wine than any other state. After that, Florida, Texas, and New York are high wine consumers. Once your business grows, look into the market for these other states that have high wine consumption like Florida, Texas, and New York. Don't just try to get a liquor license in every state in the beginning because one, it's really expensive and two, there are a number of states that don't consume much wine. One more thing. Are you looking into direct to consumer shipping for other states, or are you trying to sell in those states through brick and mortar stores? In PA I'm not sure if you need a PA liquor license to ship to PA but you do need a direct wine shipper license. Also I believe you can only ship so many cases per year.

The company I’m working with already has shipping and distribution covered in the US. Initially, it will be online sales only and then grow from there.

I know the feeling, made some pretty exciting businesses through the years, some of them failed, some of them flourished, and I don't regret making any of them. Recently certified myself as a barista and coffee steward, with eyes on a place for toasting, grinding and brewing all kinds of coffee recipes to offer the public. Some kind of an in-house mini coffee processing plant and cafe. Waiting for the right financial time to start. Love that you're going to use your brother's memory. Cheers!
