Finally Run Discord & Music While Gaming On Quest!

In today's video, I finally get to show you the one feature that everyone was waiting for. Background playback on the Oculus Quest 2, This should also work on the Quest 1 or Meta Quest, whatever you want to call it at this point. This is only possible thanks to Basti564 and his Oculess app. This app has many features including allowing you to remove your Facebook account from your Quest. However in its latest update it allows you to run any app you like in the background, this is including Discord and Spotify. This is great as it means you can finally listen to music while slaying enemies or have Voice chat in beat saber. So today, I will be showing you exactly, how to set it up! No because they come right back after a restart, it's a once only thing and you never need to do it again. As for that, if you download oculus developer hub you can disable the sensor :)

I set this up about when this video came out, but I recently got to take full advantage of it when I played Gartic Phone with my friends fully on my headset using discord and the oculus browser. It was completely scuffed and impractical but that’s what makes these kinds of mods so much fun

Thank you so much for sharing. I don't have access to a pc most the time and not being able to talk/stay in my friend group on discord while in VR has been so limiting. My partner uses the PC while I use the consoles/the quest 2. With console I can just play the game vol out of the TV and use my headset and phone for discord. But on the quest 2 I just can't stand using ear buds especially with a headset over them. As soon as I feel well enough, I'm going to try to get this working on my headset. 🤞

Heres something I like to do on a discord call with my friends that you guys could try. (on a phone) In the call I cast my phone screen to the call, then on my phone I go to oculus app and screencast my VR to my phone and since Im playing VR I put my phone away from my boundary and max out my mic sensitivity so they could hear me as I play. (You cannot just use headphones and put your phone in your pocket bc not only will your pocket touch your screen and possibly mess up the casting but also when I cast my oculus to my phone it disconnects my headphones and switch to my phones speaker)

I wonder if streaming to discord works. There is screen sharing on Discord Android so it might work, however I don't think it would capture correctly, like what happens with scrcpy. (It captures both eyes side by side, meaning you have to use crop launch commands to get it to display somewhat properly.)

Non related question, how did you open the dock with Spotify opening in the Background at 7:30? Whenever I'm finding another app to open, it just turns it into the unknown sources tab and the music shuts off until you open it back again.

Found a fix that worked for me. I believe the prime video app is the culprit. After I uninstalled it the command started working! If that doesn't work try uninstalling some other streaming apps or apps in general.

Am I doing something wrong? everything goes fine until the adb command, Every time it gets stuck on the loading after letting it sit for 20 minutes, idk what to do. Also before you ask "is developer on?" yes it is on. Through trial and error I figured out the solution, You can only have 1 facebook account on the quest for it to work.

@@DarthCrumbie you can avoid that if you use some specific version of quest and don't update it (block updated through pi hole or any filter with wifi) , also you can just not enable wifi on your headset

@@guillermoogallego_867 Use the same app to disable telemetry. That will stop facebook from gaining your data but there might be some problems to facebook services and some apps. From my experience, it seems tracking is always lost everytime your restart and you'll have to turn on guardian manually and setup your room again everytime.

Correction the discord with beatsaber.😃 When you make a party with the oculus social app, doesn't that have voice chat as well? So if you are in the same party even with people you don't have as friends, so long you are in the party they would be able to hear you as you guys speak. But yeah this is only handy if you are friends with them in the oculus, if not and you are using just code to join a room discord with beatsaber is handy.

If you can side load things into your headset, I suggest that you get file manager plus or amaze file manager so you don't need to side load games until your headset to install them.

@@tov5575 put the oculus's media volume at max, do your thing in discord then adjust the vc to your preference, then open your game. Use the audio settings specifically inside the game and turn them down/up until you find what you like

Just attempted to get this to work after about 30 minutes of trying, to no avail. Did every step exactly as it's shown in the video. Rebooted headset 3 times, tried redownloading the Oculess APK and redownloading it on the Quest, and even that didn't do anything. The problem lies with the ADB command. After inputting the exact command in the video and comment section, I'm left with an error and I'm stopped dead in my tracks. Can't find a workaround for this, and now I'm just disappointed that this isn't working for me. I was really looking forward to the discord in-game idea too.

For the ADB command to work you must make sure you do that step of temporarily removing your accounts from the headset. It's only temporary but it must be all of them. When I got an error the first time I realised I never deleted Facebook because I just didn't see it :)

@@TheMysticle When you say deleting the accounts you mean the drop off ones that are clickable right? The oculus and Facebook one right next to each other, because I've already tried deleting both after I realized the first time it was still there and it still had the exact same ADB command error.

I saw somewhere it might have something to do with having a shared library with another quest, which if that's the case then I'm not even wanting to mess around with that just to get discord on my quest. If you are also sharing your games with another person then that could be it.

Hey Mysticle! Not sure if you’ll see this but I have been really struggling to play background audio on device while playing standalone. (I used to be able to play via the web browser on Q3 before the whole battery life issue where Meta “fixed”that but broke background audio). I am having no luck with apks or web, even tried splitting audio outside of quest so I can listen to music+quest via one headset but volume/quality was bad. Any updates on this or work arounds in 2024 to get it to work again?

Seems like what we're really missing here, is an option to stream our Phone-Audio to the quest via bluetooth/wifi, right? I mean you can play/control music and join discord servers easily on your phone and the occulus app is on the phone anyways so the connection is there :o

So Oculus, sorry, Facebook, sorry, META spends billions on their hardware and software, and can't do this. A community member needs to hack it and share the results. The real reason META does not do it should be obvious - they want to control the social aspect of how the hardware is used. We just have to hope that META does not outright buy Discord to take it over like they did Oculus.

Alright I found I fix, if you have shared accounts so you can share your apps you actually have to remove those accounts too. It kinda sucks but it doesn’t show up in the temporary remove section so you have to add them back later.
