@@BrittPearceWatches I disagree. You only needed a new crown and possible a new battery, but they put in a new movement and called it a 'quartz upgrade'. AND it took over a month to get the watch back to you. You're paying for form over function with a quartz Cartier to begin with, without being ripped off every 5 years.

Talking about service costs is a good idea. Most people forget about this when buying a watch, especially when it's a luxury piece. I recently had my Sub serviced. It needed quite a bit of work, and it cost me around 2600,00 CDN+ tax, and it took about 5 months. I thought it was steep, but since I am not the original owner, I did not know exactly in what kind of shape the watch was in. It came back in excellent condition Personally, I don't care too much about keeping all the scratches and nicks. If I ever sell this watch, it's going to be: take it or leave it. In the meantime, I am going to wear it the way I like.

@@CorneliusRushtiethey don’t need to change parts, even if it’s not keeping good time. By far the most common problem is the lubrication oils drying out. That’s why Rolex says 10 years. I have a GMT Master that was in a safe for over 30 years and ran fine. Needed 0 parts changed other than the crystal to ensure water resistance. However, it’s much more likely to cost you more in the long run if you don’t get it cleaned and reassembled once in a while.

In my opinion one can go beyond the service interval if you have a large collection and rotate regularly -but in that situation my main concern/warning would be the integrity of gaskets for water resistance. The cost to service your Cartier seems very reasonable to me, esp. with new movement; fully expected a more grit your teeth type price. Good on Cartier.

I do hope a Grand Seiko service is superior to regular Seiko. Had my 1999 Seiko Chronograph quartz watch (graduation gift) serviced by my Seiko Center in Mahwah NJ. They probably just did a movement swap very inexpensive $165. However, I specifically asked not to have the watch polished and it came horribly over polished . The Seiko stamping on the clasp was reduced to a faint outline and over polished the chrome coated bezel exposing the underlying brass material, changed the case back reading 10 bar when the watch is only 5 bar and it’s actually displayed on the dial. I was so upset and all they could say is it was given to us in that condition, but you could leave it and a technician could look at it. I took the watch back. So next time I’m going to a local AD. Didn’t think it where possible to butcher a quartz watch but some how Seiko Service in Mahwah NJ did just that.

Spoke to a watchmaker (person who does the assembly, servicing etc,) at a large brand. From what he told me, it's mainly the lubricant that gets old. He said 5-10 years but after asking about his watch he said he'd think about it after 10 years. And you are mainly paying for assembly and disassembly and if needed regulating. So it's working hours rather than parts.

I have, let’s say, a substantial number of watches. Some of my mechanical watches are well over 60 years old. I wear them on rare occasions. Hence they’re not getting overused. So these ones I am slowly going through & getting them serviced when they are getting hard to wind & or are losing a lot of time. With quartz, I do all my battery replacements & even my higher end ones do not go back to an AD until just a battery replacement does not suffice. I had my Cartier Pasha serviced for the first time a couple of years ago after owning it for about 15 years. About USD600. Certainly not nothing, but not terrible either. I think it'll be good for another 10-15 years. I do think manufacturers overstate service needs somewhat. Like you, I got mine polished, and I don't regret it, but I certainly wouldn't have it done every time simply due to the fact that material is lost in the process. I enjoy your channel.

Brilliant subject! Very helpful not only for people who are new to watches. I tried on a watch today, I won't mention the brand, and asked the sales person if they serviced and pressure tested the watches in the store or if they sent them away. It turned out that they could only pressure test to 100 M and had to send watches with higher WR away. This might be good to know as it might affect the time a service takes.

I spoke with my watchmaker about my tactics for collecting. I own mostly ETA7750 derrivatives, and only a handful of others, such as an El Primero movement, Piguet movement (Omega), Montblanc/Minerva, and an inhouse module for Bell&Ross (no, not the square behemoths they make, but a classy 41mm chrono). Those are expensive, the rest? 400E for a service. No polishing. Don't need that. ETA's are super simple to service and that's the point. I don't want any more complicated stuff. I have enough, and what I have doesn't run all the time, so can be serviced with longer intervals. Glad you got yours fixed, Britt. I have two that needs fixing, and I simply can't strap the cash. I follow the advice of Tim from Caseback Watches as well as Federico: The service interval is as long as the watch runs without issues. Because whether or not something needs to actually be repaired (except for crazy complex repairs), the service itself will cost the same, at least if you have it done by the manufacturer. In the end, waiting longer between services will almost certainly save you money.

If you’ve purchased your watch within the last 15 years you do Not need to service at any set intervals especially if the watch is not worn everyday and is part of a larger rotation. Newer watches use synthetic oils that do not gunk up, degrade, or evaporate like older mineral oils. Periodically check them on a timegrapher and if the amplitude is between 230-315, small bear error, not running too fast or too slow then there is absolutely no reason to submit the watch to an intervention that may ultimately introduce issues that were not originally there.

Unless you're doing serious diving, servicing intervals are pure speculation in my experience, especially with newer watches. I've had more issues from watches that I serviced early than the ones I left alone until they needed it. It's not without risk to have your watch opened up, disassembled, and reassembled.... by a watchmaker who is under pressure to do this in a certain amount of time. These aren't like car engines where components are subject to small explosions and the power output is enough to move thousands of lbs of metal at 70mph. For the most part, watch movements will gradually lose accuracy or power reserve. When that becomes noticeable, you can have it serviced and they'll replace whatever tiny things need replacing. Any additional parts will still be far cheaper than the cost of an additional service.

I mean, that’s how I got mine. I can recommend Mr Sangwa at the Omega Regent Street boutique, he was quite knowledgable. 😊

very reasonable fees i guess, but what they meant by quartz movement refurbishing and upgrade ? sorry as i never had any of my quartz watches being serviced before. even my 35 years old ones . just i change the batteries , gaskets and maybe polish the watch .

My experience with luxury watch maintenance has been they take your watch, ship it off, and you’ll see it when you see it-maybe 3, 4, 6, 10 months later. Very annoying.

I got a pretty bad experience with my Cartier pasha sadly, it had to go back like 4-5 times to servicing for issues like a falling hand or movement failure. They did it for free (obviously?) but it was still annoying. Otherwise with my other Cartier it went ok, only the tortue had to go back for a movement failure once.

This reminds me that my Omega is 20+ years without service. It's not about the money. She runs good and I am afraid of people getting inside and messing up the thing which works great. So 5-6 years for a good watch is nothing. 20-30? maybe it's a time to think about service.

Thanks for the update. Question… I’ve been considering a Cartier de santos large for a bit but I repair machinery. My submariner has held up really well for over 6 years. I broke the pip on the bezel off last year, I sent it in and they replaced it. As for the santos. That little jewel on the crown. Is it super easy to break off? I would be worried that would break off my first week of owning a Santos. I can’t imagine you are very aggressive with your watches. Is it super fragile?

I own both. The Sub is a lot tougher, but the Cartier is fairly rugged for a dressy watch. My concern about a Santos in a mechanical environment is that it is a scratch magnet even for desk jockeys. Also, I worked as a machinist for several years and would never wear a ring or a watch around moving parts (and I understand that you may not work around moving parts). A machine that grabs metal wrapped around your wrist or finger removes body parts very quickly.

I imagine the movement upgrade is a refurbished/serviced movement that's dropped in. It means less time in service and you get your watch back much quicker. Your movement may get refurbished at their leisure and dropped into someone else's watch later.

Do Not send to Seiko in Mahwah NJ. Horrendous work on my Seiko Chronograph. They butchered the polishing ( specifically asked not to polish), replaced case back with the wrong rating and never returns my original, damaged the bezel and now it has brass exposed. Anyway their customer service is just as bad as the workmanship. I’d take it to an independent watchmaker. I live New Jersey and use Shami Fine Watchmaking for some work. How do you know your Seiko needs service?

@@michaelriera6277 Thanks for the heads-up. I haven't heard anything good about Seiko USA. Unfortunately I have been unable to find anyone locally (including Seiko AD's) who is willing to open it up and service it. The reason I want mine serviced is because the crown recently became difficult to turn. I refuse to believe my Alpinist is a throw away watch.
