My big pet peeve in survival games is that you can make highly complex things (spinning wheel, carved axe) before making simple stuff (rope, sharpened stick, stone knife). There is an order to technology. Watch any of the Primitive Technology youtube series. Nobody out there building spinning wheels before they just weave some vines together to make cords. Also, rope is so super important for carrying capacity. With just a rope to bundling sticks and logs you should be able to increase your carry capacity by like 50% due to space efficiency. Not to mention if you have a pack the number of things you can just tie onto it.

Komodo's actually deliver a blood thinner to their victims that makes them bleed out. And apparently they do also have a lot of deadly bacteria in their bite that can give nasty infections.
@DrBunnyMedicinalАй бұрын
Discussions over whether or not they can be considered truly venomous or just find the festering soup of their saliva (which just happens when carrion makes up a large part of your diet) advantageous are still very nearly as savage as the big lizards themselves. Me, I've got no dog in this hunt, I'll happily stand back and watch the brawls. 😁

As someone who lives in the tropics and studied biology in uni: why do survival games always get coconuts wrong? In other games, they bear fruits that are already dehusked, like you'd see in a western grocery store. This time, the coconuts are way too scrawny. All coconuts have the same trunk width (around 12 to 18 inches), regardless of how tall they are (they're monocots, their stems do not widen as they age, i.e. no rings, unlike hardwood trees). Same thing with their leaves, which have very large and very solid central leaf stalks. The leaves here are more akin to smaller palms like rattan. Also why do they ALWAYS call it "yucca". *They are **_not_** yuccas.* Yuccas are DESERT plants that are only found in the Americas. The yucca-like plants you see in islands in the Indo-Pacific are called PANDAN (also "pangdan", "padran", "fara", "fala", "hala", etc. in various Austronesian languages). They were used by Austronesians to weave things like mats, baskets, ropes, and most importantly: sails.
@AngryKittensАй бұрын
1. Judging from the monitor lizard ("Komodo dragon" supposedly, but way too tiny), the island is in the Indo-Pacific. Monitor lizards (including Komodo dragons) are edible. 2. _Monstera_ are not native to the Indo-Pacific, and they are not island plants. 3. Snapping turtles are freshwater and most of them are from temperate latitudes in the Americas. They do not live on islands in the Indo-Pacific either. 4. Most crab species are highly poisonous. Do not think you can survive on them while stranded. 5. Solitary wasps are not aggressive. 6. Wolf spiders aren't either. 7. Small tropical islands in the Indo-Pacific do NOT have seagulls. Just because it's the sea doesn't mean it has seagulls. Their niche is instead occupied by terns. Terns are much more well-behaved, graceful even. 8. Banana plants are much much larger than that before they bear fruit. They're also a one-time thing. They only flower and bear fruits once, then they wilt. New trunks will grow from cormlets from the main trunk.
@superandersonАй бұрын
@@AngryKittens From what I can tell, Card Survival: Tropical Island gets all of these things right. Or at least the ones of note there isn't really "size" of plants in the game and such.
@jwg72Ай бұрын
Finally someone said it!
@AngryKittensАй бұрын
@@superanderson I haven't played it. For me, _Green Hell_ was the one that was the most surprisingly accurate for most aspects (though there are still mistakes like bananas regrowing fruits after a while). The flora and fauna was, for the most part, spot on for the region and for the time period. You can tell that the dev team really did their research. If you could have a biologist start playing that game without telling them where the game is set, they'd immediately know they were somewhere in the Amazon in South America in modern times.

Great, live and learn. Actually having those things correct could add an educational value to the survival genre. The devs should make notes, if they wanna really compete.

I'll be the AKSHUALLY guy. Komodo dragons DON'T have septic bites (though they do have neurotoxin and anti-coagulant properties in their saliva). What they have is kind of iron coated teeth that keep their sharpness, allowing a komodo to gnash through and leave utterly jagged, devastated wound. The misconception of septic bite comes from the fact that komodos prey on water buffalos and those have habit to run into bacteria infested dank waters when in panic and wounded. Infact, Komodos have exemplary mouth hygiene, observed to take 10-15 minutes to clean their teeth with their tongue after every meal. They need that because they're not above scavenging on old carcasses either. Funfact, komodos have VERY strong immune systems so much that their peptides can work against normally drug-resistant bacterias and even fungal infections.

7:50 Komodo venom prevents clotting, which leaves anyone injured by them vulnerable to bleeding out and generally unable to effectively fight off any pathogens. It's just a consequence of reptiles in general that alot of bacteria (famously salmonella, among others) hazardous to mammals just kinda.. live in them rent free without issue (which is part of why you should always wash your hands after handling reptiles). Their meat isn't particularly poisonous because most of the things they eat get metabolized just fine. Just make sure it's cooked thoroughly.

Some really good ideas, but lacks tension, a hook and gameplay. The biggest issue with a castaway game is making it interesting without being contrived. The greatest risk to a real life castaway is psychological deterioration, which I've never seen in a game. Could be a good hook.
