Before Chris Columbus had the initial interview with the Warner Bros and J.K Rowling, he sat down, read the book and wrote his own screenplay for the first film and thought how he’s going to do each aspect of it. And the hardest job for him to do is to educate and guide the kids about acting and while filming them, he gives them hand gestures to give cues to bring them their best performances. He’s really the best director when it comes to working with kids on top of being faithful to the source material.
@Zombie_Trooper2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I think Muschietti, Del Toro, Donner, Friedkin, The Duffer Brothers, and Flanagan far exceed Columbus. All the talent they've worked with speak very highly of their methods and "warmth" whilst also pulling these phenomenal performances out of them. Columbus is very hit or miss and as much as I love this series they're borderline bad in these first couple outings at times.

@@calvinkopp1735 I still disagree. He's a competent filmmaker, there's no denying that, but a 20 minute essay from a random person doesn't quite sell me on his output being superior to the auteurs I mentioned. I've seen this video before and his decision making process is, once again, competent, but very run of the mill since most mid tier filmmakers go throw very similar processes in understanding the world of their product, Chris just gets more attention since it's HP. Research the filmmakers I listed and their individual approaches to cinema, inspirations, and how they tapped into the potential of their young talent. It goes far beyond shifting story elements to fit character journeys. I recommend The Friedkin Connection book since he talks about Linda Blair of course, Del Toro interviews in which he discusses his process specifically how he psychologically almost hacks his talent, and if you want something more contemporary read up on the Duffer Brothers and how THEY used characterization and built that very real rapport between their ensembles.

The first 2 movies were directed by Chris Columbus who does a lot more family friendly films (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Percy Jackson). I think it was an excellent decision to have him do the first 2 films and then move on. The first few books were meant for younger readers, but as her readers grew up (as well as the characters) she knew she needed to mature the story line. Movies and stories get higher in quality as it goes on.

You're in for a good series that grows along with you. Here though is some lore stuff that the films never really tell you; - The Dursleys' repugnance is also a cloak of safety for Harry, since Dark Wizards cannot easily detect him - The Dursleys legit went to a doctor to have Dudley's pig tail removed, Harry's living conditions did also improve at this time - Aunt Petunia's hatred towards magic is actually out of envy, as a child she even wrote to Hogwarts asking to let her in also, even though she had no magic. Her jealousy towards her sister led to trying to distance herself from it, which is why she married Vernon - the most plain and 'normal' person she had met - Harry's fortune is not due his notoriety, the Potters were fairly wealthy for having invented cosmetics, which is why there's a fortune waiting at Gringotts. His parents were still impressive though - Malfoy had planned to seek out Harry from the very beginning, given his fame he felt that they would hit it off and he could rise to prominence together, which is why they became immediate rivals when rebuked - Though most wizards who went bad were from Slytherin, there were good Slytherins, the most famous example being Merlin himself - McGonagall is very passionate about Quidditch, she played when she was young but had to quit due to injury caused by Slytherin players - thus pushing her desire to always beat them. She does however have to remind herself to tell Lee Jordan to keep his commentary unbiased (the book is a lot more colorful in his vocabulary) - In the UK it's the _Philosopher's_ Stone, which is the theoretical substance's more common name - Quirrell, a Ravenclaw, sought out Voldemort during a sabbatical, mainly in hopes of being considered important and get clout. He was no match for even a weakened Voldemort though, who only bonded with him because he was a teacher at Hogwarts
@seigeengine7 ай бұрын
I don't think "The Dursley's repugnance" is really relevant here to his safety. I certainly don't recall that ever being mentioned. Harry's living conditions are shown to improve in the movies, just not explicitly mentioned. Where exactly Harry's inheritance came from is ambiguous, and the lore about Harry's ancestor creating cosmetics comes from Rowling's writings online in 2015, eight years after the last book was published and four years after the last movie was released. It is NOT part of the books, and whether it existed in any form prior to even the last movie is ambiguous. I don't think any such plans by Malfoy were explicitly stated in the books, and I think the movie scenes show it clearly enough. The bit about McGonagall having played quidditch, being injured, etc. is also from content published online by Rowling in 2015.

Damn, I had forgotten how over the top the first movie was lol. The first two movies where truly for kids, but so amazing. I remember being a kid and loving these two movies like nothing else. And after that, with Alfonso Cuarón directing the third everything became dark.

For the most part I still think the first two films hold up. That said, haven’t rewatched the whole series recently, the third film I think comes closest to the weird and creepy atmosphere and aesthetics I always imagined as a kid reading reading the first few books

The first two are really kids movies, as everyone was a kid lol.. but they were made a year apart over like 9 years, so each movie gets to be made for an older audience.. each one gets better and better if you can get through the first couple. They are truly great movies... I'm excited to watch with you.

Vicky, I'd like to suggest a couple of fun 80's movie you may like. One is called "Flight of the Navigator" and it is one of Disney's early live-action gems. back when they were known for Epic animated movies and so-so live action ones, this is a stand out. (in my opinion). The other is called Explorers and stars a really young teenage Ethan Hawke and The late River Phoenix.

When Alan Rickman was cast as Severus Snape, he talked with Jo Rowling and asked her what he needed to know...and he was told the entire arc of Snape. At the time this was being made, only the first 4 books of the 7 had been released (?), number 5 was being written and the rest were basically outlined. Alan knew where the story was going from the beginning of his journey, and he never told anyone else. He would sometimes tell directors that Snape wouldn't do this or that but he never let on how much he knew. This entire series is very cunningly put together and you will learn the answers as to why Harry returns back to the Dursleys every summer, why Voldemort tried to kill Harry and failed, and much more. Be patient...some answers would be revealed until the 8th film (as the last book was made into two parts). Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid, was basically the model in Jo Rowling's mind for the character. Some American actors were jockeying for roles in the series, but she demanded that all British actors, except when specifically mentioned, be cast. For example, Robin Williams really wanted to play Hagrid...he was shot down. When you are done with the series, watch the 20th Anniversary reunion on HBOMax...some of the behind-the-scenes secrets are amazing, and how the actors all changed (Matthew Lewis who plays Neville...is shocking!!!). Julianne Hough was one of the child extras among the First Years in this movie, she might also be in 'Chamber of Secrets', but I know she's in this one.
