00:00 Hello Everyone!
Norway Chess is a 10-player round-robin featuring Top 5 stars Magnus Carlsen, Alireza Firouzja and Hikaru Nakamura taking place in Stavanger, Norway from 30 May to 9 June. Each of the 9 rounds consists of a classical game where a win is worth 2 points and a loss 0. If the players draw they play an Armageddon game, where the winner earns 1.5 points and the loser 1 point. No draw offers are allowed before move 30.
The 3+2 blitz opener takes place on Monday 29th and will give the winners the chance to pick their pairing numbers for the main event. The classical time control is 2 hours for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move only after move 40. For Armageddon White (the same player who had White in the classical game) has 10 minutes to Black's 7, with a 1-second increment from move 41. Black wins if the game ends in a draw. A tie for 1st place will be decided by two 3+2 blitz games followed, if necessary, by a 5 vs. 4-minute Armageddon game. Official website: norwaychess.no

Very pleased the lengths these two gentlemen went to , to just "play chess" and sidestep all the theory. What's even cooler is the way they seemed to agree to it with out saying a word! It was like Magnus :"YOU wanna just play chess" Alireza: "I thought you'd never ask!" ❤

Watching the Classical game felt like decades ago when I was first studying the games 60s and 70s. Despite all the theoretical advancement Carlsen and Firouzja play like explorers, going far off the beaten paths. This is possibly my favorite video of all I watched on this channel. Thank you Agadmator.

13:21 there was a potential underpromotion checkmate for Firouszja if after f2 Magnus queened his c pawn . Then it would have been f1=N knight check and Rf2 or Rh2 checkmate depending on Kf4 or Kh4 . Firouszja actually sensed the win but didn't see the underpromotion checkmate which would have led him to play f2 instead of Rg2+ and Magnus pointed the winning line after the match . Caruana saw the same while the match was in progress .

Bd3 is the Kopec System, developed by Danny Kopec who was an IM. After c3-Bc2-d4 white has a similar set up to the Ruy but in the Sicilian and you can play it without much book knowledge which is the whole point of it. I used it OTB years ago and won quite a few games against 1800-2000 USCF level players

See, I knew something like this (lines) would happen!! The reason Magnus wanted to play Alireza (classical) is because he wants to have fun lol!! He'd never play like this against the likes of other super GMs like Nepo, Ding, Hikaru, Wesley etc... I'm not saying Alireza is bad, but he often plays sharp lines, but completely different style from Mamedyarov, Rapport, Anish (when he's not going for draws lol), and Nodirbek... He's just full brute force, different from the madmen styles like Mamedyarov or Rapport lol
