There is no way to listen to this song and not cry. I’m a 64 y/o man and this version with Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs is the best. Home Free’s cover will tear you up too.

Vince Gill,Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless, in my opinion all 3 have an immeasurable amount of musical talent. But then again they all 3 give me the impression of singing from/with heart.

Vince Gill wrote this for his brother who had died. I lost my twin brother to kidney disease on Sept 1st 2018., they played this song at his funeral. Then I lost my oldest brother July 3rd 2020 to cancer. He also had a twin, my sister Terri. This original is the best in my opinion. Thank you so much for posting this and your raw and heartfelt emotions. I have the same reaction every time I hear it.

This song has been played A LOT at funerals here in rural America. Particularly this original version. My mom has told me multiple times that she wants the played at hers. I refused to relisten to this song for years because of the thought of that request. But in the past year I finally started to listen to it again, because I know I won't want to listen to it again once it's played again her funeral.
