As the holder of a Private Pilot license, I can verify that this account of the tragic loss of John Denver is fully correct and completely accurate. It's so hard for me to understand why he elected not to top off the fuel tanks before his fateful flight. Also as a musician who loved John's music - as sad as it was to see him lose his life at such a young age - the incredible gift that he left for all of us - his incredible music compositions, and his spectacular, iconic, beautiful and incredibly gifted voice - will live on forever for us, and for generations to come. Rest in Peace, John - and Thank You for Enriching our Lives with your Beautiful Music and your Spectacular Voice!

I still miss him and his energy so very much. He saw me through school from the 7th grade on. He went with me to college. He always always always followed whenever I went to the mountains, for an hour or a week, he was singing his heart out! The world would be a better place if all of us followed in his footsteps and did what we can to heal the earth. It was and still is a major loss and a tragedy!

Thank you for making this available - it's very moving. John Denver died four days before my mother did. After her funeral we all gathered at my cousin's farm, where she had set up a boom box in a kind of shelter house outside. She asked what kind of music we wanted; all eight of us went to our cars to fetch CDs, and came back with John Denver music - every one of us. We mourned both together, and celebrated their lives.

The world lost a beautiful deep man that didn't always seem to belong here. I always loved him. His music comforted me when I had to live in two Canadian hospitals for four months when I was fourteen. And when I started playing the guitar His was the first music I started with. Just love him. 🇹🇹

My youth was blessed with John Denver's songs and music..... I had an 4 track cassette in my car of "an evening with John Denver"" which I played continuously....still have the two cassettes till this day. My sons grew up listening to his songs and sing and play them till today. I was in Arizona and on the road between Phoenix and Apache Junction there is a road sign next to the road, adopt a highway "in loving memory of John Denver" A fitting tribute to an awesome person.

He died just a couple days before my 30th birthday. On my birthday, the news of his passing and the loss had fully set in. I remember listening to Poems, Prayers and Promises and thinking about my life's time, all the things I'd done in 30 years and how it had been. And I wondered if in John's last moment, if he had time to hate to see it end. We think we know how it's going to be, but we can never know. All we can know is how grateful we are for this life, a gratitude that no one ever expressed better than John did in that beautiful song.

Haha Laura Hayes...what's it got to do with Cliff Richard? Nothing. LOL Poems, Prayers and Promises purportedly came on the radio at the moment a woman, listening to the radio, was just about to take her own life. "I know I'm gonna hate to see it end. Seen a lot of sunshine, slept out in the rain..." Very poignant for me, to turn thirty and reflect on my life, right at the time JD died. Surely he did indeed hate to see it end, and relished every sweet moment of life. Very meaningful on milestone birthdays...or when one is just growing old, thanks for the birthday wishes. :-)

+SweetDjehutyBlueEyes You know, to me, the real importance is not how John died, but about how he lived his life...with an open heart, with love, without pretense. He never claimed to be perfect, yet he always gave the best that he had. I only wish I could be half the human being that he was! He died flying...something that he truly loved....and I can't help but believe that was a gift. If he had time to reflect, or if he's looking on from somewhere out there, I hope the lines he remembers are "I have to say it now, it's been a good life, all in all. It's really fine to have the chance to hang around". He had 53+ years on this earth and truly lived all of them....how many of us live to be 80 or 90, yet lack the courage to ever really live at all? Thank you for sharing your feelings, and the warmest of Birthday wishes to you!

I was 28, fresh out of the Navy and headed for Yellowstone to work for the summer. My mantra, repeated over, time & again was "Looking for Space". This song kept me centered at a tumultuous time in my life. Now my son is working there. His 1st time away from home. With his ADHD & depression he too needed some words to live by. I pinned the same song to his dorm room wall in the hope he will be inspired, I have noticed a change in his calls home lately. Thanks you John Denver. Your work lives on.

And he was born in Roswell, New Mexico - as his father was an Army Air Corps Pilot (before the Air Force was formed) and was stationed there. So - there is a chance that John Denver is actually - a space alien - I mean really - born in Roswell, New Mexico - on December 31 - sound a little fishy to me!!!!;-)

Earthlinked AND - he only had 8 toes!!!!!!!!!!!! ("The 8 Toed Wonder" cut his big toe and next toe off - in a lawn mover accident at the age of 17!!!!) If you watch closely - when he walks or runs - you can notice that he does favor his left side - he does have a very strange gait - as your big toes supply most of your bodies balance!!!!!! And he had a "pitch perfect" voice - about one in 50,000,000 humans have this!!!!!!! And a pitch perfect voice - is a gift from God - you cannot make one - only God can!!!!! You are born with it - or you NEVER have one!!!!) Denver couldn't hit a sour note if he wanted to - his brain simply does not allow it - as humans will ALWAYS listen to a pitch perfect voice - we simply cannot stop listening to it - most human brains can recognize this instantly - (They are not all good - Adolph Hitler had one!!!!) Elvis, Sinatra, McCartney, Beverly Sills (and Justin Bieber sorry to say - so he'll be around for a while - as age does NOT change a pitch perfect voice!!!!!) and several opera singers all have pitch perfect voices (which means your voice box, throat, mouth, teeth, tongue, gums, facial bone structure - and his mouth are PERFECTLY aligned - like a sound system in a recording studio!!!!!!!) You DO NOT want to be their dentist!! Just a little too fishy for me - Denver simply ain't from around here!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people though of John Denver as a had been. He tried to fit in with the times and I thought his music suffered for that. I thought his early music was his best stuff. Most people will live and die and no one will notice or care. I cried when John Denver died, I never cried for any one in my life I didn't personally know, "and that's only if I liked them A lot!" I miss him and think of him often and play his music a lot, its still my favorite. R,I.P John I will never forget you.

I remember the first time I saw an eagle fly, and because of John's words it was truly spiritual. He was a blessing to my life as well as yours. What more can a man ask for as a legacy? (1 of 2)Thank You - you're right about the spelling! My lap top was stolen - and I do not have the time, patients or the pictures to rebuild it. It is now 4 years - the only idea I wanted to convey - THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT - NOT a suicide - is well explained. It was made, after MONTHS of online talks with Kathy, who was THE GREATEST John Denver fan EVER! It was originally posted on KZbin from Atlanta - 4 hours after she died in California. I never met Kathy - this broke my heart!

I'm sure he gave God a performance - he owed God one - God did give him a "pitch perfect" voice - he never took a singing lesson in his life - and only about 9 months of guitar lessons!!!!!!!!!!! He also tuned an RCA studio piano - using only his voice!!!!!!!!! It was rated as 100% perfect tune later that day by the professional piano tuner!!!!!!!!!

I saw him 5 times in concert, a couple of times with a full band and orchestra and once completely solo. He had the most beautiful voice I've ever heard - only singer I know of who was as good live as on his recordings. Powerful & Beautiful at the same time. I always thought "Poems, Prayers and Promises" were his best lyrics.

He once lifted a cow over his head and kissed the Queen of England on the mouth. He could jump across lakes and oceans. That's how he got to England. He could swallow whole rivers and eat 500 flapjacks at one time, and with Babe, his blue ox, he lassoed the moon and brought it down to earth.

Denver said - about a million times - and the state of Colorado agreed when they made "Rocky Mountain High" the State song - that the "high" he was singing about was a natural high of being in the mountains!!!! It has NOTHING to do with smoking anything - just a natural high from being at altitude in the mountains!!! This was discussed over 40 years ago - time to WAKE UP!!!!!!!!

It's a true gift that he was given a guitar by his grandmother...and felt inspired enough to STICK WITH IT, so the world could feel inspired. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer just days after you posted this video. He died 7/25/09, loved John Denver's music & was a pilot also..He didn't get to see the messages I made for him. I'm sorry for your loss. Thanks for explaining JD's story.

Thank you for this video! John will always be remembered for his wonderful songs and his effortless soaring tenor voice. Oz told me that John once told Nigel that he was such a "dirty old man," and then wrote a song for him entitled "Dirty Old Man" under his real name. The song appears on the Spanky & Our Gang "Live" album. I have a copy of John's "Windsong" album that I treasure, on which he wrote "To Oz, What a great bass player you are. Gee, I wish I could grow a mustache! John Denver."

+rose ipk +Earthlinked I must say, John Denver has really touched my heart these last 8 years. Sure I was brought up with John Denver and loved his music. All my girls were brought up singing JD in the car and throughout the house. I was going through bad times and my daughter's told me I need to start skiing again - to get away and "be free". I haven't skied in over 20 years, plus I was never good at it, although I tried. One ski ticket was all it took. I loaded my iPod with John Denver's songs - his inspiration! I ski by myself, singing down the mountain. It has been 8 years of skiing almost any terrain and now even marrying a ski patroller. I was laid off from my previous job so I decided to relaunch a business I used to do (before getting sick and had to take another job). I will make it work because I have JD's voice and music filling my ears and heart. I have come to love the mountains and that is where my heart is. I work from the mountain top. Luckily, I live in the Northwest and go there sometimes 4 times a week. Someone posted a KZbin video with the rare song, "No One". This is the prelude to the song, "It feels good to see something wild and free. Because we too, want to be wild and free. We can remember that as long as there are wild places and wild things. We can remember that part of ourselves which is a big part, I think, of what makes us human beings" - John Denver. This is a very sad and emotional song. It tells us that money isn't everything and anyone can be depressed and lonely. John Denver was about the earth. Singing, preserving and teaching us the value of mother nature. I have stepped up, as a start, to help preserve and keep safe the large, urban park here in my town. It is 702 acres, and full of wildlife and beauty. I encourage everyone to do their part in preserving the one planet we have, the only we will know (unless you are an astronaut) and teach your children there are more in life than cell phones and electronics. Go out and plant a tree! BTW - thank you for your video. For the people having problems reading it they just have to pause, read and move on. We can all try to put the blame of a death on something. After my near death experience being shot through the chest with a .38 hollow-point and within 1/8th of an inch of death, I believe it is in God's hands. It was tragic but it must have been his calling. Think of him next time you see an eagle. I see them every day at the park hovering over the Puget Sound. Thank you.

I remember this day and feeling the pain of losing this amazing talent that constantly gave his peaches and cream voice and incredible use of words to gently go into places that other singers could rarely go. He could go to these places easily and regularly. There are some artists I call musical chameleons like Madonna & Phil Collins - also rare talents. But the stability of ease that we were drawn to with the words that could literally "dance" or "waltz" around our hearts and minds in the enchanting way that John Denver could invoke was just nearly left undone by any other artist. You didn't have to be "in love" to know the feelings and understand what it was to "be" in love because John presented it through his delivery. He took us on a journey none other could do and that was through his ability to put words to music that embraced your soul. He gave his soul to his music in an intertwined ability to reach people in a way I have yet to experience through another musician. I heard "colors" and felt comforted by the deep emotions he was able to capture. He took my soul to the rocky mountains and brought my heart to the joys he had known. There really isn't enough English language to put together all by itself to put together the whole puzzle of human emotions and journeys but John Denver was able to put it all together through the use of poetry and soulful folk. He truly has been missed even though I only knew him through his music and some movies. I believe fame wasn't anything that ever had changed his attitude either. He seemed to be "himself" in every instance I saw him, even in the "Oh God" movies, his acting still didn't seem like "acting". This accident will always remain tragic to those of us that understand that this man would have only retired after dying. He would have been in his early 70's today and continuing on. I feel the loss of what he was not here to create since 1997 - nearly 18 years ago now! That's 18 years of loss I feel. I will not apologize for the length of my writing as John Denver did not receive enough recognition in his death as this video shows. Thank you for bringing the findings of this investigation to us. I found it enlightening. Still sad but the truth is all we ever ask, Thank you again

I would hope that MANY would also agree with DR. Neil Degrasse Tyson - when asked if he preferred burial or cremation he answered: "I would request that my body be buried not cremated, so that the energy content contained within it, get returned to the earth, so that flora and fauna can dine upon it, just as I have dined upon flora and fauna throughout my lifetime." GREAT ANSWER!!!!!!!

Or As Carl Sagan said: (from his speech "The Pale Blue Dot" when the Viking Explorer Spacecraft - before leaving our Solar System - turned back and snapped a picture of the Earth from about 1 billion miles away! And due to a reflection off the spacecraft - and optics - the earth was held in a beam of light in the picture!!!!): Sagan's comment (The Pale Blue Dot): Our planet is a lonely spec in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The earth is the only world known, so far, to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment, the earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits, than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish, the pale blue dot, the only home we’ve ever known.

I'm so glad I clicked on this video. The information and images were nice, but it's the song I love the most, "The Wings That Fly Us Home." It and the original "Sweet Surrender" are my two #1 favorite JD songs. For those who didn't know, Joe Henry wrote this song about his and John's relationship. They were "anam cara" (Celtic for soul friends) IMO. Such beautiful lyrics, vocals and music. I wept every time I heard it the first several times. Words can't express how I love this song. Thank you so much, for this beautiful video, and tribute. Also it was very helpful to have such an excellent explanation for the accident. It is sad to say that some people have put out videos with no real understanding of the situation. It is heartbreaking that John is no longer here, but we are so lucky that he lived and touched so many, and pointed us in the right direction. A true inspiration.

John Denver, like anyone else, was a typical normal / abnormal human being who had a very good singing voice - as is with all vocal sounds, it was his own sound. Life is what it is for all of us - and when it is over... it is over. No need for all of us to try to figure the guy out. He had his ups and downs, his smarts and dumbs, his good luck and bad luck, good decisions and bad ones. We sure to tend to make much more out of people's lives than we ought. If you like his voice and his music - KZbin will be a place to turn to. If not, then turn somewhere else for who you do like. We are basically spoiled with all of our instant music availabilities... there were days that when people wanted to hear music, they had to do it themselves. I miss those days.

I am sure that your dad knew of your messages you made for him - he had to know!!!!! Denver was a true "1 in a million" - he was born with a "pitch perfect" voice - he could tune a piano with only his voice!!!!! So of course he got plenty of compliments when he sang - which was NEVER off key - he talked and laughed - on key - like Elvis, Sinatra and Crosby to name a few!!!!!!! Having a pitch perfect voice is a gift from God - all you can do is put a shine on it!! And he did - very well!!

If I was flying a plane and it crashed it would be put down to pilot error or just a tragic accident. However as soon as you put a famous person in the cockpit it becomes a conspiracy as to why the plane crashed. I absolutely love John Denver's songs, I could listen to them over and over again and never get bored.
@jeffschwartz1237
@jeffschwartz1237 10 жыл бұрын
The is NOT and never was a conspiracy - PERIOD!!!!!!!!!! The reason for the crash is that Denver spent too much time trying to change the fuel switch - from one tank to the other. (Gas is stored in both wings of a Long EZ - 55 gallons in each wing - when you run out of gas in one wing - you switch to the other wing - and head home!!!) It was NOT an automatic switch (and it was very outdated - he actually needed to use a pair of vise grip pliers to move the fuel selection!!!). BOTH checkout pilots flew the Long EZ before Denver bought it - and told Denver to change the switch before flying. The new (and automatic) switch was ordered - but had yet to arrive. Denver figured he'd do a few touch-and-goes - and that is all. (A touch-and-go is to land and then take of without loosing speed - pilots do this all the time - to keep sharp with their landing skills and their aircraft). Denver simply ran out of time - and crashed after 67 minutes of flying. He took off thinking he had about an hour of fuel - (Denver radioed the control tower that he'd be doing touch and goes for about an hour) and then he simply lost track of time - and switching the fuel switch took much longer than expected. By the time he got the switch to the correct tank - he was nose down and did not have the time to pull out of the dive. He had 2 reasons for flying that day: 1) To practice his touch and goes in his new Long EZ (he owned it for 2 weeks and it had just been painted - and 2) he had promised to buzz his new neighbor (Clint Eastwood)'s house - as Denver bought the house - to be close to his daughter Jesse Belle - who lived near the Monterey airport with ex-wife Cassandra!! Why did Denver NOT have the tanks topped off - (filled to the max) - as most pilots do? That is the million dollar question!!! Probably (my guess) because the was too anxious to fly - and music and flying were the 2 passions in his life. He was found with $2400 in cash with him. (Denver was worth over $250 million when he died - and he paid cash for the $65,000 Long EZ. So it was not like he could not afford to fill the tanks!!!) I dearly loved Denver's music and attended 23 of his concerts (1970 - 1996 - most in Atlanta - and one in Red Rocks, Colorado on a bet!!!) I will always miss the music that was to be. But he should have never flown that airplane on that day. PERIOD!!!! Thanks for watching, The Author, Earthlinked

I have read every REPORT on Denver's crash and EVERYTHING you write here is accurate to a "T". He indeed wanted to buzz Clint Eastwood's house in Malibu as they had just golfed together earlier and he wanted to practice touch-and-goes! The switch had been put in the plane in a sideways position and was not "linear" (meaning left was not left and right was not right)....it was up over Denver's left shoulder and a mirror was used to see it. The plane was designed for the switch to be between the pilot's legs but the previous owner did NOT want a fuel line running in the cockpit so he moved it to the back wall. Denver ran out of fuel and had to reach up over his shoulder to reach to switch tanks. The FAA believes this would have cause him to press the right rudder thus causing him to go into a downward spin!. Witnesses report a popping sound which would occur when the tank ran out of fuel. At only a 500 foot altitude, he had no time to recover before crashing.

@chengloki His certificate was revoked - but that had nothing to do with the accident. It was revoked for a second DUI in Aspen. He was to go to trial on this January 1998 - but died Oxtober 1997. I think weather his flying certificate (NOT his pilots license - a flying certificate is a health certificate from a doctor stating that Denver no longer used alcohol AT ALL - EVER!) was revoked or not - that had nothing whatsoever to do with the accident - which was the subject of this video.

John Denver was very unique and had great talent. Unfortunately, he had a tragic death due to human oversight/error and was taken from us before his time. But no one could predict the outcome until it was too late. It didn't have to end this way, but that was his fate, regrettably. We will always remember him and enjoy his music which he has left us forever. May his memory be blessed.

In July of1973, just back from Viet Nam, I hitchhiked to Boulder, Colorado. There was a park there at the base of the mountain. At the park there was a man and woman there passing out sandwiches to the many drifters and such who had found themselves alone there. That was the best sandwich I had eaten. Someone told me that the man was John Denver. I said, "ok". I had no clue who John Denver was, but I knew he was a generous, kind, and humble man. And man could he make a heck of a sandwich.

Love you John Denver. So sorry you died this way, but at least you were doing what you loved. I do wonder if the embarrassment of crashing his plane caused him problems crossing over (or even just the sudden unexpectedness of his death.) I wonder if anyone has seen the spirit of John after he passed. I can't believe it's going on 20 years (3 more years). Doesn't seem like that long. I remember being upset that other famous people died around the same time and not much attention was given to John Denver's death. Mother Theresa and Princess Diana had died just a month earlier and had their funerals broadcast on TV. I would have rather seen John's. Princess Diana's death was still getting heavy coverage when John died and they really didn't focus much on him. Maybe they wouldn't have anyway, but I would have liked to think they would have if Princess Diana didn't get higher ratings for them. Thank you for this video. Have you considered remaking it with the music added back in? You should be able to use copyrighted music now on KZbin. You just have to provide the track for sale below the video.

It could’ve been done better and should have for the simple reason that he was kind of a legend. However, what’s done is done, and it is what it is. What a great musician and a great person in general. I've always known who he was but never knew he was a pilot. I just stumbled upon this. I don't mean to ruffle any feathers because no matter what happened, he was obviously a great guy. However, the report is very odd from a pilot's perspective. First of all, there are many, many aircraft in production with manual fuel switches. Many of the older Pipers, Mooneys and even the newer Cirruses have manual fuel flow switches, that's just simply how the system works. The high wing Cessnas don't have this because they are gravity fed. It just strikes me as odd that a company would agree to stop manufacturing a switch that was literally the only way to feed the fuel tanks... Also, I'm not sure if the writer understands aerodynamics because depressing a rudder pedal during straight and level flight does not send an aircraft into a dive. Not in any shape, form or fashion. Also, he would have noticed the plane leaning to one side if the other wing had fuel while the other was about to be extinguished. The other thing that people fail to realize is that losing your engine in an airplane does not mean certain death. The airplane is not kept aloft solely by the engine. It's also important to note that when you stomp on a rudder pedal during level flight, you experience quite a bit a g force. It's not something that goes unnoticed. The rudder pedal controls yaw. The force that's about the longitudinal axis of the airplane. The ailerons control the horizontal axis, the elevators control the vertical axis. Rudder pedals don't send a plane into a dive from level flight. I mention this because if Denver had lost his engine, he would have immediately tried to switch the tanks, felt the yaw when he hit the rudder pedal, turned back around and grabbed the controls, and been able to safely land the plane on the beach or in the water. According to the writer, his plane hit the water at 125 mph. This is far more than adequate airspeed to keep that plane aloft, I'm assuming this airplane has a stall speed of about 55kts or less. This means "wing stall" nothing to do with engine. Also, if he hit the rudder pedal, he would have had to be unbuckled. The report states that his torso was buckled into the pilot seat. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone but any aviator knows that that report doesn't make sense. What most likely happened is for whatever reason, he dozed off in flight, the airplane ran dry, the wing with fuel began to lean down, after the engine ceased to run, the electrical system was still functioning, causing the autopilot to try to correct the planes change in attitude due to the loss of thrust, which caused the plane to pitch and lose speed which caused it to stall sending it into a steep dive into the ocean. I have become fatigued at the yoke before, luckily I had a co pilot to help. It happens to the best of us.

Jonathan Murray yours is the most interesting comment I've read, very very well said. You certainly know what your talking about. I'm a 70 year old who knows nothing about the aerodynamics of flying. With deepest respect to John and his family, he had been flying for 78 minutes and would have known he was short on fuel. Why then, was he flying at 500 feet, with no chance of recovery if something should happen. No alcohol or other drug use was detected in his blood, so he would have had his wits about him. How terribly sad. He has so much more to give. HIs songs are immortal, telling great stories with feeling.

He did NOT know he was short on fuel. He was not used to the plane, misread the fuel gauge and did not realize how fast the larger engine was burning fuel. It was his FIRST TIME flying solo in this modified plane and he made a foolish pilot error in not filling the tanks, forgetting that he couldn't switch the tanks while solo, and taking extra minutes to go "buzz" Eastwood's house.. He had a young daughter he loved and he was seeing Annie again. His family says he was happy and enjoying his life.

The airplane will NOT forgive a third error!" He was also on the team that designed the Cessna Citation and put the turboprop in Doug Champlin's Great Lakes!

The NTSB said that he twisted left and was feeling for the fuel switch which was within reach but difficult to turn. As he tried to turn the switch he hit the ocean at over 125 MPH. He was flying at only 500 feet. He was told by the 2 test pilots to unbuckle, turn around with knees in the seat to reach the fuel switch. The previous owner ALWAYS flew with wife or adult child in the back seat! Denver was scheduled to have an automatic fuel switch installed in 2 weeks. while on a tour.

Well - YES and NO - about being an experimental airplane - sort of - kinda!!!!! "Experimental" is an FAA designation NOT a type of aircraft!!!!!! The airplane was previously owned by a vet - who ALWAYS flew with his grown daughter or son in the back seat!!!! That specific Long EZ had over 3500 hours of flight time on it. You must also understand that ANY aircraft that is not made on an established assembly line - (Boeing for example - and especially "kit" airplanes that you build yourself) - are labeled by the FAA as "experimental".. They must first pass very specific flight testing before being deemed "air worthy" by the FAA!!! And the Long EZ (then as now) was a very safe "kit" airplane - deisgned by Burt Routan (the same guy that flew around the earth without stopping for fuel - in an airplane named "76 Voyager") and OK'd by the FAA!!! This Long EZ was several years old!!!! And for a Long EZ - you bought the plans and hired someone to build it - or you built it - as the plans also included exactly what you needed to build the aircraft - part by part and how to do it. Denver's Long EZ was just over 5 years old and had over 3500 hours on it and was professionally built!!!! Denver bough it for $65,000 becasue it had an engine that was larger than suggested - (today you can buy plans of a Long EZ with a turbine jet engine!!!) and it had won several speed contests. Denver also had 2 Long EZ pilots to flight test the airplane before purchasing it!!! (BOTH suggested the fuel switch be replaced BEFORE flying the airplane!!!!) Denver bought the Long EZ ONLY to fly from Aspen, Colorado - where he lived - to Monterey, California where his daughter Jesse Bell lived). He also bought a house in Monterey, California - next to Clint Eastwood and had promised Eastwood he would "buzz" his house!!!

that's great info, sounds like , as I suspected , john Denver was a very smart man, I don't think he meant to end his life, perhaps something unforeseen happened., but sure sounds like he took good care to make sure the aircraft was safe,.thanks for the info

Jeff Schwartz "And the Long EZ (then as now) was a very safe "kit" airplane - deisgned by Burt Routan (the same guy that flew around the earth without stopping for fuel - in an airplane named "76 Voyager")" Tragically ironic. I still don't fully understand why the fuel was not topped off, would it rally have taken that much time to take care? It just does not compute!

Jeff Schwartz It seems to me that even an experimental plane should not be allowed to be legally sold unless all customizations that could have an impact on pilot safety were returned to the original state of the original design that I assume was approved by either the FAA or some other agency.

@rancar29 Trust me on this one - his freinds and family HOPE that they get details - would you really want to know that he died and never know how or why? They go teh same coronors reports and NTBS reports that I have - and a few things are not pretty - nothing about the accident is pretty - but it happened and most want to know the why and how it happened!!! Sorry if this offends you - but read teh comments - 99% want to know!!

I was so very sad when John died. There were so many rumours, and til now, coming across this tape, I had always wondered about it. Thankyou so much. Although the irony of a death caused for seventy $'s worth of fuel, or a badly situated switch does'nt make it any less tragic. As a human being, we like to know what killed people we love or admire. We were born the same year. His voice had a sweetness and purity like no other I can think of. I am thankful he died fast, and knew nothing about it.

+lurch321 Yeah - Spirit was his 11th album - of the 26 studio albums he released during his lifetime - and "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was a song he wrote in 1968 (released by Peter, Paul & Mary in 1969)!!!!!!!!!

How I wish I lived on John Denver's days before and meet him and How I wish I could meet him in heaven if God will let me enter.. John Denver died two days before my birthday on Oct. 14th but I was Born in 2004 and now I'm 16.. I'm a millennial but I do love him and his songs, he's one of my favorite singer, actually I'm not a millennial generation fan. I would rather live when John's around😁.. All I can do for now is do good and well on living so that I can meet him and loved ones.

You are exactly correct - and this is explained in this video. He simply spent too much time trying to turn the "hard to turn" fuel switch!! (which today are automatic - there is no fuel tank switch!! The really foolish idea - was to put LEAVE the fuel switch in the back of the plane - for the former pilot - not a problem - he ALWAYS flew with his wife of older child. For Denver - a HUGE problem - he always flew alone!!! THIS SPECIFIC Long EZ was simply NOT made to be flown alone!! Thanks!!

John Denver's brother Ron said: "Anyone that thinks that John Denver killed himself - has their head up their ass!!" He LOVED his life - and had a very good relationship with his 3 children/both ex-wives (he was dating Annie again!!) But MAYBE you know more than the police, the NTSB, the evidence, his brother, his mother, both ex-wives, his children and his friends! SORRY - I'm gonna go with those that knew him well & a KNOWN sticky gas transfer switch - rather than a passerby on the beach!
