John asked if the employees were going to see the once in a lifetime show.He said we will play a special show for them because he saw how much the employee worked behind the scenes for them..and they did for free.A line of first come first serve with an orchestra. I grew up in the 70's and 80's a John Denver fan. I had a girlfriend in HS in the early 90's who would roll her eyes when I would play his music. I broke up with her. One of my life's great regrets is passing up the opportunity to see John Denver in concert. He was dead soon after that concert. I still remember that concert like it was yesterday. I was secretly jealous of Annie and definately planned on being her replacement ... as soon as I got out of Jr high. lol. I cried all the way through this video. I miss John so much. You only lost one girlfriend because she dissed John? I got dissed so much I became immune. Back in the late eighties, he came to Mexico City to sing at a Rotary Club convention. My daughter was part of his “back-up” chorus as she attended a local bilingual school and her music teacher was asked to get some kids together for the opening ceremony. The theme was ecology, so he performed a song he wrote for the event, and then included Annie’s Song.We all got to meet him backstage where he was upbeat, kind and funny. His bags got lost in transit, so he made light of the situation and wore a beautiful, multi-colored jacket he had travelled in. It is a treasured memory. Before "Country Roads" and "Rocky Mountain High" would help his solo career take off, Denver had written a song originally titled "Babe, I Hate To Go". It was brought to the attention of the popular folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. They would take the song, retitled as "Leaving On A Jet Plane", all the way to No. One on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles Chart.

Peter, Paul, and Mary also recorded For Baby (For Bobbie) in 1966. I read the song was originally written about a former girlfriend named Bobbie. I loved John Denver and was thrilled to go to his concert at the Forum in Inglewood in 1978, as I wanted to hear HIM SING. Instead, he turned it into a "sing-a-long" and all I could hear was a 350# guy next to be, who couldn't carry a tune in a washtub crocking "Take me Home Country Road". This was what the LA TIMES said: , “When the 34-year-old singer-songwriter asked the audience to sing along on the chorus of "Back Home Again," the 18,000 fans responded so naturally that you'd think they had been traveling with Denver on his 51-city U.S. tour. “The audience didn't need any coaxing for the hand-clapping and foot-stomping support it gave when Denver followed that song with the festive "Grandma's Feather Bed." “But the real outburst came on the rousing "Thank God, I'm a Country Boy." The audience whooped it up with an energy and zest that the Forum staff would normally associate only with a Rolling Stones encore.” He keep them singing the entire concert and I went home to listen to his albums.

I had an uncle-in-law that spent his last years mostly alone but not lonely. He was once a contractor on the gulf coast, highly skilled craftsmen, etc. I visited him often in the evenings before he passed and most often, he would be listening to John Denver albums on his record player while drinking beer. We barely knew one another while I was growing up but when I moved closer to his location in my 30's we spent considerable time together, good times.

I always loved John Denver, growing up in Colorado. I remember at some point he fell out of vogue to like his music, but I always liked him and people made fun of me. I remember being mad after he died and all his "fans" came out of the closet and paid tribute to him. I'm sure he would have appreciated them more if they could have said those nice things while he was still alive.

I didn't care. I loved John when living John wasn't cool too.

Wow! I just asked "Alexa" to play that song and it is indeed beautiful. Thanks for the heads up. This may be a John Denver kind of a Sunday!

This was a great episode to start the new season - a wonderful tribute to a prolific singer/songwriter. I’m so glad Mobituaries is back.

On a road trip in college from Chicago to the West Coast with no MP3 players or streaming music my friends and I pulled in a Colorado station once we hit the state line and we heard a lot of John Denver. To this day if a song comes on I just have to pause and sing along. What a beautiful lyricist and musician!

My very first favorite song was country roads take me home and that was in roughly 1974-1975ish. If you don’t get a good feeling while listening to John Denvers music then you aren’t alive!

One of the best college football traditions is the West Virginia fans singing "Country Roads".

25 years? How can that be? I feel like it was just yesterday that I first heard “Poems, Prayers and Promises” and fell in love with John Denver. “…and what about our dreams and all the memories we share?”

My favorite John Denver songs not mentioned here are "I'm Sorry" (another song about Annie) and "Perhaps Love." These beautiful, soaring pieces round out that "country boy" side of this talented musician.

Don't hate me but as someone who grew up overseas I've never cared for "country" music. On a road trip in college with no MP3 players or streaming music my friends and I pulled in a Colorado station once we hit the state line and we heard a lot of John Denver. To this day if a song comes on I just have to pause and sing along. What a beautiful lyricist and musician!

You wouldn't put him on at a party, but he had a deep sense of ecology, worked with many environmental organizations and always had general goodwill. Country Roads and Annie's Song are simply beautiful. Plus he had a good sense of humor, parodying Imagine on Letterman. Saw him about a month before he died. RIP, John.

Was lucky enough to see him in concert once. Can’t believe it’s 25 years since he passed. Boy 1997 was a crummy year like that. Princess Diana, Mother Theresa and John Denver. I loved his music.

I saw him at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in the 1960s playing with the Chad Mitchell Trio He was replacing a member who had died. He had that amazing 12-string guitar and was just breathtaking. Rousing round of applause.

John was actually a member of The Mitchell Trio. He replaced Chad Mitchell when he left the group.

How flattered his former wife must be to know that she was the inspiration for ‘Annie’s Song’!! Such a timeless classic!😭😭🥰😘

Annie is much, much more than his former wife. She was his muse and he was lucky to have her. Don't disregard her role in his music.

during my junior high and high school years, 1968--1974, John Denver's songs comforted my young temper and also taught me so much English. 1981, I went to Monterey for my Master degree, 16 years later, he died there.

As a kid I knew every single song of John's by heart and sang them everyday. I had all of His albums and an autographed picture. Born in 1965, my guess is almost everyone born in the mid to late 60s especially in the South new John intimately
