I call this the Ramsey effect….. He tells people how to get out of debt, and he’s right. But then he tells people how to maintain or get ahead and it is nothing like the way he did it. He makes his millions, tens of millions, hundreds of millions off of the advice he dolls out (book sales included) and the insurance financial guru institutions he has set up. So, as I tell people who are in severe debt, use Dave Ramsey to get out of debt, but don’t use him to get wealthy.
@SmallSpoonBrigadeАй бұрын
It's true of pretty much all the major names in financial education because the reality is a lot harder and can't always guarantee success. Nobody will ever get ahead if they don't have at least some disposable income that they can apply towards savings and investment activities. If you're working a minimum wage job where all of your money is already going to things that can't be cut, then you're never going to get anywhere, and thanks to changes in the economy, that is a thing that does happen. When most people have issues related to savings and the like, you do have to question to what extent you can really blame those folks for the situation they're in. And most of the advice that I see being handed out is just inappropriate to people who have real problems with finances. Most of it is like typical organizing books that are geared to people that fundamentally don't have a problem, they just don't know what to do. Definitely not people with real problems that need real solutions.

Exactly. The finance “gurus” have it so easy these days to separate people from their money. Back in the 70’s, they had to put on big seminars in hotel ballrooms often in different cities to tell people about the “secret” to make big money, usually in real estate. After a big presentation that consisted of bragging about how much money they were making flipping houses, they would tell the audience that they needed to buy their book or sign up for advanced courses to actually learn the “secret”. The prevalence of the 9-5 job stems from its predictability and security. Entrepreneurship isn't for everyone. It's reasonable to conclude that operating a business, potentially working 100 hours a week for a year or more, with only a small profit margin, carries significant risk, especially for those with a spouse and children to support. We like to glorify the few that make it big but what about the 90% who might have gone into debt trying to make a business successful.

The adage of "if it sounds too good to be true it is" is the best rule of life. Yes owning a business is great but like you said its a lot of work. Even if you are successful, and have employees doing your meanial work for you you are still working 24hrs a day doing financials and growing your business. Most businesses fail, in the first year or two, the next failure is around 5-7 years after it becomes realatively stable because the owner thinks thy are richer than they are and starts living beyond their means. Buying a over price car a boat and all the toys they always wanted or think that they missed out on. The focus becomes having a goodtime rather than keeping focused on the business. Most independant business people dont realize is that all they have done is bought themselves a job, and keeping the extra mouths from the feed trough is the only way you make money, and if you do make a scaleable jump to the next level sometimes the investment in time & money is not worth it. For the average person being employed by someone else is a better and safer place for them.

When people say that income producing real estate is a great investment, it's not technically an investment. It's a business using property as the vehicle. I’ve noticed many examples that you kind of brought up where because some of their brands are tied to their ‘frugality’ or minimalism they’ll find reasons and excuses to finesse the system. “I bought this super expensive sports car because it will appreciate in value so it’s actually an asset” and “it was better buying the mini McMansion compared to the normal house because it’s more attractive to sell in the future” are examples. Like just be honest - “I got filthy rich peddling sh$t to my viewers and I’m going to spend it however I want”
@AccordingtoNicoleАй бұрын
I will push back a little and say that just because you’re into minimalism or frugality or whatever doesn’t mean you can’t splurge on nice things that are important to you. In fact, that is the very essence of minimalism- prioritizing the things that make you happiest. Less but better. And people on internet can be insanely dogmatic and critical towards strangers who they feel aren’t making the decisions they agree with. But truly, no one owes others an explanation for the personal choices they make. However, when it comes down to exploiting your audience to get those things, I do agree with you.
@brandonb7120Ай бұрын
@ I understand what you’re saying and I suppose the specific examples I’m thinking of are because those particular KZbinrs literally built their brands off a frugality of you should spend only what you must for necessity - almost a race to the bottom, until they made money and all of a sudden that got pushed to the side. It showed it was more a marketing ploy due to the popularity at the time of those topics
@AccordingtoNicoleАй бұрын
Or maybe they used frugality when their circumstances required them to and it paid off, and now they can live a little better. If they made a bunch of money and continued to act like they were broke for clicks, that would garner criticism too. You’re damned if you do, and damned if you don’t in the court of public opinion.
@Scott-o2w4nАй бұрын
@brandonb7120: A true asset puts money in your pocket. Liabilities take money from your pocket. The super expensive sports car you bought became a liability when you paid for it. Liabilities take money from your pocket. The car doesn't provide any income stream as a true asset should, If you drive it you'll incur more costs. Plates, registration, insurance and maintenance. While in may increase in value over time you"ll still have to find a buyer to realize any profit, Will your profit exceed the rate of inflation?

I think the biggest dose of reality that most people need is that the best predictor of your personal wealth is the financial class you are born into. The vast majority of people that are wealthy were born into families that are at least financially comfortable. For everyone else, it's very unlikely that you will become wealthy without generational wealth. It's not wrong that owning a business will set you up for more financial success than a daily grind working for someone else, but most businesses fail within the first year. You could end up trying and failing several times before you can establish a successful business that makes you lots of money.

There are plenty of influencers who I’m sure are lovely women but they make videos about their (HIGHLY romanticized) lives as stay at home moms that are meant to appeal to women like me who wish we could afford to be home with our kids, and it’s easy to forget that they are also working full time in order to put that content out there. @@Artzlady Scientology was making millions for a long time before it became tax exempt. Religion makes money by selling a product that doesn’t exist. The hard part is convincing people it’s real. Once you’re over that hump, it’s margarita time on the beach!

I find this also with most "health food" KZbinrs - they spout twaddle that is not at all supported by evidence, but they continue to churn out content. Oh, yes, they may have began with a valid point, but as they continue.... it's unsupported.

Two words: Health Insurance. Especially if you have children. Financial advice is worthless unless this topic is covered. "Financial independence" may be fleeting without health insurance. If you are buying your own insurance, it is very expensive, will increase faster than inflation, and they can drop you at any time. Thank you for at least thinking about YT creators misleading and lying to people. It's gotten to the point where I have a handle what is clickbait from the context and thumbnail. If I stumble into a video that lied in order to get a click, I give a thumbs down, negative review, and ask YT to stop bugging me with their crap. Users need to punish clickbait.

One thing to keep in mind here is that Nicole is Canadian. While health insurance does exist here, its purpose is different than in the US. Canadian health insurance is mainly to cover the additional expenses that aren’t covered by our universal health care. Things like a private hospital room, vision, prescription drugs, travel health coverage etc. In the majority of cases….Canadians without any additional health insurance would be on the hook for less annual expenditures than the average US health insurance premium.

Hey Nicole! New subscriber here. Thank you for this video, going to explore more of your content. Happy I found your channel. Good stuff in this video. I am a tiny KZbinr making some revenue that covers my monthly bills and I am 100% with you on doing right content and working with sponsors/companies that I believe they're doing good work and not a scam stuff. Maybe not a great way to collect a lot of money in short time as a youtuber but that makes my calm and I know I am doing right things for me. Thanks again!

Nicole you're so right. Remember as you succeed you will be the target. It's more about the journey and less about the goal. So if you spend 40 years to make 10 million dollars then what? You're at the end of your life with 10 million dollars. I think the trick is to have many goals. Everything in moderation. Each goal should be positive like a bucket list. Positive experiences. Bottom line you should spend less than you make adding to your financial success by default.

Hi Nicole! I just wanted to say how much I truly appreciate your videos-they're always so informative and inspiring and I’m so grateful for all the value you share with us! 🙏🏼 I was wondering if you might consider making a video about your KZbin journey and how you grew your channel. It’s so impressive to see what you’ve built, and as someone who’s just started my own KZbin channel, I’d love to learn from your experiences. Hearing about how you managed to grow your channel as a side hustle and any tips you might have would be amazing! Thanks so much for all that you do-you’re such an inspiration! ❤

Best way to get rich is to rip someone off. Starting a business is good, but only if you can sell overpriced products and services. You don't need millions of subs, you need to find some whales who are willing to buy a $1000 course from you, and that course is just info that anyone can find for free. You can mow someone's lawn, but charge $400 -- or pay an employee $20 to mow the lawn, and pocket the $380.

Thank you for this. It amazes me how people revere certain big-name financial advisors. Before KZbin, the money came from speaking engagements or books. It makes me so sick and angry to hear the same old advice that's disconnected from reality because it leaves out where the initial money came from. Yes, sure, putting aside money is helping expand the money you have later. But if you need money for food and housing and medical and furnace repair, you can't always save the money for later. And if you have less than great health, you may also have to carefully choose where your energy and time goes. So yeah, some honesty about the "hidden" part of wealth generation is refreshing. Thank you.

KZbinr posted a phone number in a comment, I called, and he talked me into trading and invested 4000. I don't know how to get my money back. He wanted me to open a cash app to send money to a foreign country. After that, I stopped sending him money. They are both popular on youtube they both are in the United States. .
@AccordingtoNicoleАй бұрын
Probably wasn’t actually the KZbinr. Imposter scammers infiltrate the comments all time. They take my picture and make a user name similar to my mine and pose as me to try to scam people. I delete them as I see them, but it rampant across every KZbin channel.

The algorythm is wild. I just got into a discussion with another youtuber about how he has been fear mongering for years. Guy got really defensive really quickly. I've actually never had a KZbinr respond to any of my comments so that was wild, his channel is a little bigger than yours. And now I see your video suggested in my feed and I've never seen your channel. Good content. Fear sells and some people will exploit that to no end.

I guess that I was/am one of the lucky people who had a career that I absolutely loved, at least 90% of the time. It was motivating, satisfying and challenging. So, no motivation to move. BUt, for the many people who work in jobs that are not these things, then I agree with you. Look elsewhere---NOW. I find it amazing how many people are in very unsatisfying jobs that they hate and yet hey just stay there and get progressively more unhappy!!

Thanks for the honest video. YT is full of utter crap on finance. They need to start clamping down on it somehow. It does seem a little depressing the only way to get serious views and attention is either talking about finance or how to start a youtube channel. Even lots of the art channels mostly talk about how they started a youtube channel and made money from it. I am not having a go here but you are doing exactly the same, but in a nice way. I am wondering if it is possible for most people to start any sort of meaningful business on YT that is not talking about money or starting a channel.

The videos which start with - they don’t want you to know blah, blah, blah - get on my last nerve. I wish KZbin would throw in a warning of ‘caution, con artist ahead’ with this lame catchphrase.

You can do like I do with that sort of stuff and just use the option to remove the channel from your recommendations. If enough people do that, the behavior will stop before too long.

Totally agree. I watch a lot of financial KZbin things, and they're interesting, but if you watch long enough, you'll see through a lot of it. The biggest thing is detaching your income from your hours spent.
