The least believable part about this was she was able to get two whole problems answered by the same person in the same building. This would most definitely be a two hour scavenger hunt on a real campus.

Don't get me started. I remember I got a scholarship from my college for the following semester and I wanted to know how much it would be (All they said is I got a scholarship). I went from my Graduate Advisor to Grad. Studies, to Fin. Aid to the Cashier's Office all the way back to my Advisor, who literally said, "Oh you should have just started here, I would've told you." Stupidest rabbit hunt I ever did.

I am a 22 year old veteran in school in Florida. I've been living there for well over a year, they have had my address of permanent residence for the whole time, they've had my proof of independence (from DD-214) the whole time, and they applied out-of-state fees to me when there was absolutely zero criteria to do so. When I went and uploaded the documents they asked for again, They said they needed abother one 3 days later (but never notified me, it was simply a comment on their form submission. no email, no letter) Then they sent debt collectors after me, which in total has multiplied my year's tuition by 5x. Total bs.

@pokemans9753 no the system is not straightforward. Fasfa may be easy but there are plenty of hoops that you have to jump through that change institution to institution. I just found out they i have to pay for a class out of pocket because I'm taking it in the second term and apparently scholarship awards are only released all at once. I 2000 dollars worth of aid that will go unused and this is not explicitly stated anywhere. You literally have to go on a scavenger hunt to get any questions answered.

As a scholarship student, and friends with all the scholarship students, we are poor enough to be anxious about all the payments. And its an overseas scholarship, different language with a totally different system from where we all come from. University has a huge gap from high school, where we need to know 100% of everything on our own, a little bit of mistake can cost a lot. I can relate to her, every adults on uni expect us to understand in advance. Not to mention struggling with classes and mental health.

The wording on the FAFSA is a bit misleading, once you fill it out so many students believed that the form saying your FAGSA application was accepted so that must mean you got paid. All it meant was your institution received an application.

There’s plenty of time to submit renewals and applications for financial aid. The system is bullshit because of how expensive everything is. Financial aid is not the problem, the problem is how the loan companies operate. The only real bullshit problem with financial aid is how some of the programs measure who qualifies for their aid. You need to be at a certain level of income to qualify, meaning that if you’re just above it, then you won’t qualify despite the fact that you have no money. Insurance companies and the IRS charge you based on income rather than wealth. Which for the majority of middle class families is complete garbage. The government doesn’t try to differentiate between people barely getting by and people who get to go on vacation every summer. Financial Aid is not that however. And in the state of Maryland, where I reside, our Governor has extended the deadline for Fasfa. Meaning that we now have plenty of time to renew or apply for financial aid. The Financial Aid system is only as hard as you make it for yourself. Just play your cards right and you will be fine for the most part.

Can't have young americans speaking up to the geriactrics in charge. So they tore down the old system where college was dirt cheap, state paid most of the tuition. They made the colleges into minature corporations. You know who has a hated time paying for constantly rising tuition. Less and less hippies and minorities go to college.

My sis was told by a counselor she was good to go for next semester with the classes she planned to enroll, fast forward to that next semester and she finds out she was missing a prerequisite for one of the classes, this held her back a full semester. I had the opposite experience, my counselor after looking at my transcript realized I was halfway through finishing a minor I wasn’t enrolled in, I got enrolled and added that minor to my degree. @@UnicornsPoopRainbows maybe I’m giving too much grace but the counselors I spoke with did seem like they had to be knowledgeable in a LOT of majors, like all of liberal arts perhaps, so you’re right they’d often state something and then they’d check the paperwork to be sure they were correct 😂 they would even tell you too to double check everything yourself to be absolutely sure. But I do always mention that minor addition story as far as counselors because that was genuinely impressive the counselor picked up I was well on my way to finishing it when I wasn’t even enrolled in the minor, I wouldn’t have done that minor unless I spoke to that counselor, I had no idea about it as it wasn’t connected to my major

Like with a bank and a house or a car, it's assumed or understood it's gonna take several years / it's a multi-year thing. With school, they kinda force multiple years, even though, technically, since your whole life is about that 1 thing (school) you could do a 6-year Master's degree's worth of classes and work in 1 year. But the financial side somehow treats it like it's a per year thing, even though (in North America) it's a 4 year thing.

Yes, she qualified for four years of financial aid initially. But what if she drops out of school? Or only takes part-time classes? Or takes a semester off? Or dies? Or wins the lottery? The government wants to be aware of all these things before it disperses money for another year of tuition.

US is crazy with tuition... but unless you live in poverty, there is NO excuse why you can't save up for your kids' tuition in Canada. Too many kids - that was your choice and your kids should not suffer. If you were able to go on vacations, own a car, have smartphone(s), get lessons for your kids, or anything that your disposable income went towards, it is ABSOLUTELY the parents' or parent's fault for not saving up in Canada. You do NOT need to be rich to learn how to save before/after having kids. You just need to make wise spending and saving choices - so yes, kids, blame your parents. But those whose parents were living in poverty should absolutely get financial aid and it shouldn't have to be difficult.
