Peter Atwater, president of Financial Insyghts LLC, sees the state of the modern world reflected in the rhetoric and actions that surround us. Whether it is China recalling loaned pandas from the San Diego Zoo, the troubled IPOs of Uber and Lyft, or the willingness of people all around the globe to elect previously unthinkable leaders, there are several recent signs that the ground is shifting beneath our feet. In this interview with Grant Williams, Atwater cuts through the noise to focus on the sentiment indicators that are informing his current world view. Filmed on May 22, 2019 in New York.

PETER ATWATER: I can remember writing- shortly after Trump was elected, he has to placate his base.
And he has to placate the markets. And their interests are mutually exclusive.
This is a time where small localized individuals have far greater power than those at the center.
My freshman class this spring- they do not see 2018 the same way investors see 2018. There is no question
in their mind that the peak is behind us.
GRANT WILLIAMS: Now, the peak in what for them?
PETER ATWATER: The peak in confidence, their confidence, the confidence of America at large. They
saw something 2014, 2015.
When somebody picks up the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, to step back and say, as you're
reading these headlines, why are they here? Why are these on the front page? And they were on the front
page always to confirm the bias of the reader. The front page is telling you this is the consensus view.
The nationalist Nissan leadership base said we are not going to become fully integrated into a global
organization. That nationalistic opposition to globalism put Ghosn very vulnerable. The American Dream
from for most Americans has become unachievable. And so, that which is not given will be taken.
GRANT WILLIAMS: I'm about to sit down for a long overdue chat with a man who probably makes me
question things I read and think about more than just about anybody else. That's Peter Atwater. There's so
much I want to talk to him about confidence, mood, left versus right. And of course, Tesla, I can't leave that
one alone and the trade wars. So, let's go see what Peter has to say.
Peter Atwater, welcome back to Real Vision.
PETER ATWATER: Thank you, Grant.
GRANT WILLIAMS: We've been trying to do this for a while. We finally got a diary synced. But now
we're here. It just feels like there's nothing to talk about.

It’s “credible threats” Ben Bernanke said it in a 2002 speech. He knew that the Fed would hit the lower bound ( zero interest rates) and would need unconventional tools. He said they could use their words. Imagine a guy who invents a gold machine and with this machine produce as much gold as he wanted with little effort . The moment that information gets out to the markets the price of gold would plummet even before the guy produces a single ounce of gold. The “credible threat” alone would be enough to move the markets. They had to raise rates enough to get the threat but not enough to actually damage the markets.

I've been watching 'RealVision' for many months now. I never miss an episode. I love your passion, authenticity and clarity in communicating important, uncommon perspectives. A topic I've been expecting you to cover but is, so far, missing from your analysis, is the relationship between rising cost of producing energy(ECoE) and the decline in business profits and household prosperity. I'm sure you agree there are many unexamined assumptions about the true basis for our prosperity including our history of low cost energy, and the factors contributing to the rising cost of energy production. The most eminent person writing on this subject is Dr Tim Morgan, ex director of research at the London based firm Tullet Prebon, the world's largest inter-bank energy and finance brokerage. Dr Morgan's blog. Surplus Energy Economics joins the dots between issues that appear disparate and unrelated to most people; the GFC, rising energy production costs, declining GDP growth, the house price bubble, BREXIT, rising debt, increasing immigration flows, declining per capita prosperity and the rise of pitch fork reactionaries like the gilets jaunes. Dr Morgan claims that policy makers fail to make effective changes to policy settings because they are looking at grossly distorted econometrics. In a recent post, he claims that, although we need renewable energy, wind and solar only look cheap when compared with now expensive fossil fuels, and the trend cost of energy is rising exponentially. In 1960, one unit of energy invested, yeilded around 50 units for use in the economy. Today, as our heritage oil, gas and coalfields decline, that yield is down to 11 energy units from one invested. We are very near the 'net energy' cliff edge. Its pretty clear that we need to plan now for an orderly transition to a low energy future economy. Planning for this low energy economy may allow us to maintain social cohesion and have dignified lives with meaningful work as we make the transition. Not planning for this transition would risk us being taken by surprise and the emergence of a disorderly, dystopian energy descent. This topic deserves your close attention. The Energy cost trend is the trend underlying all other trends.

Agree! - As the human race, we have (to date) planned abysmally for our survival, and now the message seems to be that only the 1% have a future worth living, indeed, the rest of us should just go away and die or commit suicide, sooner preferably than later! It really doesn't need to be this way.

Large corporations with resources to see farther out may have come to the conclusion that as a business things are not looking good. Raising share prices is a chance for the Board, and senior management can take huge bonuses. Senior management generally have no skin in the game. They are looking to bleed the carcass. Not terribly technical is it !!

The Fed has manipulated this market for so long that I think many believe it can keep it pointed upward indefinitely, but for every Fed move I believe there will eventually be a counter move by the market. The Fed has done a masterful job of postponing the inevitable, to the point perhaps where many sceptics will throw in the towel and begin buying equities again, but I still think the next recession will hit extremely hard. The Feds policies have encouraged spending, but mostly through borrowing, and those individuals and companies that racked up debt during the past ten years may have a difficult time servicing it when their income drops.

Not gonna happen. Because it doesn't work. It doesn't work within the present paradigm of understanding of what government is and how it should work, and it doesn't work in that it is not a thing that seeks a working solution or a general efficiency just universally. Just as little as the idiot idea of socialism works, wherever you draw the line for how "limited" it should be at the moment. That's _really_ the bottom here; the moment that people are forced by reality to question these postmodern ideas and the idiocy of thinking that just because one can collateralize and mitigate and take on faith and credit, that will somehow lessen the burden or the correlation to reality. Or that this has anything to do with... what, history or borders? That have been re-drawn and shown wrong or irrelevant time and again? Arbitrariness? The bottom is democracy and this failing vision of "liberal humanism" itself. It's conceited and prideful and a bad joke, and it was always going to end up in a bloody self-referential spiral. We may see a series of crashes and all sorts of erratic developments, but we won't be rid of the consistent downtrend before that shit effectively goes.

@@Sakhmeov interesting comment and over my head at a few points but I think you over estimate mankind on the "postmodern ideas and the idiocy of thinking that just because one can collateralize and mitigate and take on faith and credit" and underestimate his desire for community, sovereignty, border. @Sakhmeov
@Sakhmeov 5 жыл бұрын
@@RGMiron Great time, terrifying time. Interesting time, as the saying goes. You ever heard of the archetypal concept of the "Devouring Mother"? That's kind of what we're talking about here, only on a sociocultural level. Or, because I bend that way, the idea of Pride; that being the denying of the judgment of the world and of God and instead believing in self-justification. I know people want that community and sense of self-sufficiency. And they might even bring up how these ideas have worked out historically. But pretty much always, even the best of them (take Acemoglu, for instance) mistake and jumble things and fail to actually look at the thing itself and its direct origination, rather than just going "post hoc ergo propter hoc". Firstly: It doesn't matter whether if people believe themselves in these mad ideas; if the system they are participating in is built around them and incentivizes them, then the people can believe whatever they like. They will be coaxed into acting out the system's own axiology and teleology, whether financially or socially or judicially or whatever. Like logic gates in a circuit, albeit not as definitive. But still, with a bias. Which adds up over time, until the system can start selecting for the kind of madmen who actually _do_ believe. What's happening to the Democrats right now? To Silicon Valley? Charlie Munger put it best, I think; "You give me the incentives, and I will give you the outcomes." Secondly: Specific and universal fitness can be vastly different, and nothing exists in isolation. Nothing is or can be self-justified. This goes for everything, _including_ nations and communities. And you show me the nation, the tribe, the ideology today that hasn't yet effectively betrayed those who've signed on or been born into it. Nations used to be about values and ideas and most importantly about _why_ people believed that they worked; now they're just empty shells, and people are trying to Ghost Dance around the few recognizable frills and trinkets to try and bring the past success back, and thinking about the "Why?" is as good as banned because it isn't marketable. Believe me, I don't like what I'm saying. I wish that I had something more than just my personal ideology and take to swear to. But, I cannot honestly think anything but that we have lots and lots of pain in store before people have had enough idealism and false hope knocked out of them to accept that the present state is over, and never actually worked in the first place as all that held it up was the consolidation of the past...

This guy is saying that Bernie Sanders is not popular with younger voters, but that is actually where he is doing the best. I volunteer on the campaign and I can tell you for sure that we struggle with older voters more than younger voters. It's amazing how confident these guys are in totally false information sometimes. Not saying that this guy isn't smart and I certainly enjoyed this talk.

Crazy Bernie isn't electable or nominatedable. Crazy Bernie's popular with a tiny number of extreme of Leftists that advocate for policies which most Leftist regard as dysfunctional, and he's a old white male, Leftist won't nominate him. Warren say's Crazy Bernie's policies are her policies, but Warren is a science denier when it comes to gen3 nuclear as the only viable solution climate change and her Bernie health care plan to expensive, it's absurd. Harris debates like a lacky, not a leader. Bidens out to pasture. Crazy Bernie's knows he won't be nominated, the only question is who he will sell his support to. Looks like Warren, from what Warren says. The DNC gave up on try to win against Trump. Have you noticed?

"If that's not real, what is?" simply beautiful: if I may, let me answer; "what is REAL?" REAL being what matters, ENERGY tech. LFTR, and the opposing piston 6 cylinder 3 crank shaft, 3 generators, 2 stroke internal combustion extremely clean diesel that gets 55 miles a gallon in a 2 ton dully configured with motored shaft to each wheel hub. Braking generated power stored in capacitor pack. Battery's not needed but can be optional. This is real technology that's been doable for decades, & only getting much more efficient with modern martial & computer controls. Even 25 miles per gallon is significantly less taxing on the environment that any battery EV in anyone's pipeline. By the time we can make super-material super batteries, we wont need any of this stuff anyway, because we'll have solid carbon hydrogen fuel cells. BUT, right now, we can't come even remotely come close to making a safe clean & easy to recycle battery, not to mention their life spans are horrible. And every time there's an accident you have this monster energy storage ready to ignite anything it can, but with capacitors, they can be safely discharged in the crumple phase of the accident.

Formafist I'll clue you in. America is lowering interest rates to push down the value of the U.S. dollar because the China U.S. trade deal fell apart. This has the net effect of pushing up U.S. stock values. Trump is timing the rate cuts perfectly to increase his chances of winning the 2020 election. Remember there's a 6 to 8 month lag between and interest rate cut and when it kicks in. This would see rate cuts in September and December this year as its already too late this year for the U.S. housing market.

I wanted to like Peter, but the more I listened, the less I enjoyed his narrative of our reality. Having spent a great deal of my career on delivering "things", I find myself more than a little disappointed by this kind of psuedo-intellectual armchair critique of people who are trying to do something that may benefit humankind (and the rest of the biosphere). The comparison of Musk to Theranos' Elizabeth Holmes and the circus barker analogy were the final nails in the coffin for me, as I parted company with this interview. With homage to Douglas Adams, I imagine this interview being conducted on the Golgafrincham Ark Fleet Ship B, a starship as it relocates the largely redundant and useless part of the population from the planet of Golgafrincham. We have a planetary emergency with respect to the environmental damage we are doing (climate change being a subset of the threat). Our track record shows, that we are not going to change our habits. Therefore, on current trajectory, we are doomed unless we engineer our way out of this self-made disaster. Give me a Musk, with all his failings, any day over the hubris of a thousands Peters.
@medraut6599
@medraut6599 5 жыл бұрын
None of what you said is mutually exclusive. Musk can be a circus barker and create an automotive revolution at the same time. Just because he is the guy that pioneered electric cars doesn't mean that his company will survive in the long run. There are many examples of where a company basically created a market only for another company to come and dominate, facebook comes to mind for example.

Yeah I know what your are saying, my sister is one of them! Her attitude is don't be jealous of people who have more than you, they did something for that wealth, (She misunderstands exposing the reality for jealousy) I say be careful you could loose it all in a month! But true to her form, she doesn't want to go that deep into the subject. I don't know why? Perhaps fear of what is really there, and just around the corner for most of us if we get an unlucky streak or we get sick!
@n8pronouncednate858
@n8pronouncednate858 4 жыл бұрын
Perhaps jealous is the wrong word. What I would typically tell people is to focus on themselves. Don’t worry about what your neighbor has, worry about living the life you want to live. I personally don’t want a lot of “things” so I don’t have much. I do however want a large family so that’s what I focus on. I do the things I need to do to live the life I want. Some people want to be rich, if that’s what you want, you should ask them how they did it? What they had to sacrifice? Find out the traits that made them successful. “You could loose it all in a month” it doesn’t matter how much you have, anyone could loose it all in a month or one minute. Always be thankful for what you have. It could be much worse.
@OMGAnotherday
@OMGAnotherday 4 жыл бұрын
@@n8pronouncednate858 - Nate that's fine if you can live the life you describe, however, I was talking about the people who have lost their livelihoods, life savings through the likes of 2008, and that there are millions of people across the world that could have been brought out of poverty had 2008 not happened! My focus is to try to highlight the harm that the banks/elite have done and perhaps we as humans can stop this kind of thing happening again! I doubt I will have much impact on my own, but as groups, we might stand a chance.

I’m sure we both agree the federal reserve has to go, but I’m sure we have different ways of helping people out of poverty. As for impact, you could start by living the ideology you espouse. If it works you will not need to force other to join you. A good idea does not require force. If force is needed you should rethink the ideology you espouse. What do you believe caused 2008 crisis?

Interesting conversation and great points made but I can’t help but feel like this man is analyzing and attempting to conceptualize data in a world that he doesn’t understand from a common persons perspective as a lot of the things he mentions as potentially coming are a already fully established in the psyche of the people. Thought provoking for sure but there is just something out of touch about it. Personal opinion.
