After thinking about the cycling example, the real story is the importance of incremental adjustments in cycling practice habits, not necessarily the direct effect of hand-washing, dust accumulation on bikes, etc. If the trainer can convince his team that he/she is willing to help make small changes to benefit them as individuals, the athletes will have little resistance when the trainer says they have to change little things in practicing habits to become a super cyclist. Success is 20% skill and 80% discipline. I’m also not a statistician haha!

It’s not just about having enough money to cover all expenses. 4 years ago I would started investing individual stocks after maxing out my 401k and Roth IRA. -The first year I made so many mistakes such as panic selling or investing high dividend stock without looking at the payout ratio. I made a 1% return while my index funds were up 10%. I thought this was pointless but I stuck with it for another year. -The second year I dedicated hundreds of hours into learning about everything finance such as balance sheets, P/E, P/S, Debt-to-equity, payout ratio, etc. I realize I was investing a value trap or dying companies. I looked for high growth companies and by the end I had net a 20% return which was par with my index fund that also returned 20% that year. So it seemed like all that work for nothing since my index funds were doing the same or better but the saw potential in individual stock investing. -The third year is when things started clicking when I made 115% return while my index funds were down 6%. Instead of a shotgun approaching of investing multiple stocks I decided to be laser focus on 3 stocks. -The fourth year I was up 120% and my index funds were up almost 28%. -I managed to trim my FIRE date from my original 20 years to now achieving it within 5 years. -Now do I recommended everyone to start doing individual stock investing? HECK NO! Unless you are willing to sacrifice hundreds of hours into learning the basics and then hundreds of hours into each stock. Good Luck on your investing journey
