I do appreciate people with excessive incomes informing the masses that the best financial strategy is to put away $5000 towards retirement, when they don’t have additional income to move towards retirement. That is not a financial strategy for 80 to 90% of the US population. I wish they would actually provide useful strategies for the majority of American citizens that are being gutted by taxes and other loopholes. A smile is just a mask covering the facts with empty words.

if you are 17 or 18, put 1K into a ROTH-IRA, maximize the contributions slowly and set it and forget it. Be intelligent, rely on yourself and not a company (401K contribution) because that shot may not come for a LONG time and when it does, it may be fickle and fleeting.

The minimum wage in North Dakota is $7.25. However, cashiers at ALDI and Target have a starting wage of at least $17.50/ hr. Part-time retail jobs at the mall have a starting pay of $13- $16/ hr, depending on the store. Some fast-food restaurants pay $14- $17/hr. McDonald's in Bismarck, North Dakota is giving a $2000 bonus for those people who are willing to work at 4 AM and work there for at least 6 months. We have a labor shortage in North Dakota, especially so in the service/ retail/ restaurant sector. As such, you'd be really hard pressed to find anyone paying that $7.25/ hour for those types of jobs.

Yet Social Security is based on Federal minimum wage so we all suffer. Those of us on SSDI are forced to exist on less than $1200/month. Nobody's talking about helping all 8 million of us. Yet they can pass a bill (SSFA) to give people full benefits along with their pension and a year of back pay. This only helps 10 million out of 77 million people on Social Security. Because of this stupid bill Social Security will be ignored for years to come. People are going to die and they don't GAF.
