I have watched for a while now but never commented I love your approach to detecting and interest in the history of the item , whilst finding gold and silver is always great , I personally like finding an item with a name on it just to look it up , whether it is a token or a brick 🙂 The blue and white Booths pottery cup was made about 22 miles away from me I was watching a comparison video recently and they used all sorts of stuff to clean items , apple cider vinegar worked really well , to me as good as branded rust removal products Lastly thank you for all the time you put in to editing and the clean up and also the pictures you show to give an example of items in original adverts or photographs Like you say The history is in the item ❤️

Excellent job Greg!! That’s how I got my start is this hobby by digging colonial bottle dumbs behind my parents house and selling them to a local antique shop. I remember selling a lot of stone wear and very thick and heavy black glass bottles that fetch a pretty penny today, I think we got .50 to $1 depending on the bottle. That’s also where I found my first British colonial coin and I’m still addicted today

After school 1980s I'd crush ice, use Kool aid packs and sugar to make a slushy..lol the bottom of it had a plastic see-through brown cup that twists on to catch the ice as you manually cranked the ice. 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

Wow Greg that meat grinder is awesome, I've been with my wife more than 40 years and I was just talking about that meat grinder her mother had, there was a hole in the table where she use to mount it because of the flat piece of steel missing from the screw where it mounted to the table I myself used it couple times grinding sausage you don't see those around anymore also the blue cup is very nice piece keep digging just maybe you can find the remaining piece. Outstanding job you do Greg keep up the good work.

Hey Greg. I've searched a couple of times now and I can not find any reference to one of the Big Five mines in our neck of the woods. Was thinking it would have to be up near Whitesburg somewhere if around here at all. Were you or Chris able to locate it?
@FindingAmerica3 жыл бұрын
I'm actually making a best educated guess on that one, Tommy. The only references I could find to Big Five were in mining. It could be some other type industry but it must not have lasted long as I can't find any records of it. Take care and ATB, Greg
@rocketmanintn1883 жыл бұрын
Thanks Greg. All references to their mining operations I can find were from the western states circa early twentieth century. Are there any metals that should not be soaked in apple cider vinegar? I am learning so much from your videos.
@FindingAmerica2 жыл бұрын
Apple cider is definitely not for all metals. Here is a lot of info on cleaning your finds and hope this helps you Joan. Apple cider vinegar is excellent for many brass and copper relics and for rusty pieces as well. I use it on pieces that do not have much historical value or pieces that don't have an original patina that I want to keep. Brooches, metal dog tags, some buttons, etc all respond well. I use the vinegar straight and just submerge the pieces in it. I pull them out at short intervals to check their progress. It's really amazing how quickly many of the things respond to the vinegar. Many brooches just take a few minutes! Heavily rusted iron also responds well and I can soak the items for days with good results. I never use it with coins. I usually only dry toothpick or use the Andre Pencils on most old military buttons. Leaving the dirt in the crevices of the old buttons helps to make the button's high relief designs pop and display better. Most military buttons are dry clean only! If an IHP or early wheat is not crusty. I will just dry clean them to try and preserve the patina using the Composite Cleaning Pencils from England and the Andre pencil set. I use the hard pencil to gently scrape any dirt from it. I then use the steel wool pencil and slowly remove the dirt and grime. I clean it with a dry, soft towel in between cleanings to see my progress. Once I have the coin where I want it, I will then use a tiny bit of paraffin wax and rub it into the coin which will give it a great luster. I do have a certain way of cleaning the IHP's and some early wheaties. Here is what I do for them when they have a stubborn coating on them. I use a small glass bowl and fill it with hydrogen peroxide. I then put it in the microwave until it is boiling. (40 seconds or so) Then I take the IHP and put it in. Whichever side you want to work on should be the side that is facing up. Give it about 10 seconds at a time and then remove it. Never leave them in it too long. I use a small fork and just push it up the side of the bowl until I can get my fingers on it. Be careful, the coin is going to be hot for a few seconds. I then rub it vigorously with my thumb or a cloth and a lot of times that is usually sufficient. If it has a lot of crust, I use the Andre Pencil set to scrape at the crust gently. You may have to repeat this a few times until you have it where you want it. Get the peroxide boiling each time. I do about 10 seconds each time. I also use the steel wool pencil that comes with the Andre Pencil Set a lot to get them perfect. Once I have the penny where I want it, I take a bit of paraffin wax and rub it into the coin to give it a deep luster. (Here's the disclaimer LOL) With all that said, do not clean any coin that has substantial numismatic value. For nickels and aluminum tokens, (this is only for ones that have no numismatic or collector value) that you just want to look nice and display well you can use wet 0000 steel wool and some dish liquid soap on them. If a piece has any historical or monetary value or possesses a nice patina, keep the cleaning to a bare minimum. If it's a piece like an old brooch or a similar item that doesn't have any desirable original patina or historical value and you just want it to display nicely then feel free to clean it. Hope that helps some. ATB Greg

So many non-metallic finds. Got me to thinking. How do you value these old landfill finds compared to objects found in situ? I know that it's history that makes a find a treasure, and I don't mean value in a monetary sense. The sheer amount of artifacts in this video left me just as excited as you were. Just wondering, which is more fun. Quantity or quality. Hope this doesn't sound facetious because I surely don't mean to be. I'd watch your videos even if you just found a single Memorial Penny or a big ol' gold ring.

Thanks so much, Janet. They did pretty much what we do now and had their garbage hauled to a land fill outside of town. Now, it's treasure to us! LOL Take care an'd ATB, Greg

Do you have enough vinegar for those meat grinders? Just kidding. This is a place I can probably stay for a couple straight just digging away. Never know what you're going to find in a place like that. Hope you and your family are doing well Greg. Take care. Thanks for the video.
