He is exposing 4 blocks that way, if you dig out per say blocks 10, 11, & 12, you expose 8 blocks. And when you come to a cave, you dont have to fill in over anf under you or placing another trap door to continue digging. Its neither fast or easy. Its *CLICKBAIT* plain and simple.

For anyone on console wondering how to do this method: The trapdoor method doesn't work yet so just dig out a 1x1 channel, then place a water bucket just above the channel then go into the water, sprint so you swim and swim into the 1x1 channel. From there you can remove the water and you will stay swimming even with no water

But at that point you might aswell just strip mine as X-raying will only increase your efficiency by a little bit. I find it easier to just get a decent pickaxe with enchantments and just strip mine I make more ores than I know what to do with.

Miscellaneous blocks aren't necessary if you're strip-mining; you'll get some anyway from mining stones. Also, I'd recommend bringing as much wood as possible to be able to stay in the mines longer. Wood is essential because it is the key resource in making extra torches, tools, and crafting tables whenever necessary.

If your going to find diamonds and you have quite alot of iron like 20 try removing all your armor and items and just equip a pickaxe and start digging straight down saves you tons of time and in anycase you fall in lava you won't loss much and you can save time

I found my first 4 diamonds in the spand of 2 minutes. And then i kept finding them. I went into a cave system level 10-14 started finding them in every corner. Ended up with 19 diamonds.

Actually something no one mentions is that when u see coal and redstone you should mine 8 blocks in each direction because if u try this you'll realise that 99% of the time you'll find another ore because of how the chunks generate. Most times it's only 8 blocks and 12 is what I do, but do a 2×1 because you'll find more that just 1×1. You wont regret it but yea apparently youtubers havent payed close attention, no offense

its still more efficient to stand up and mine.....you have 3 more blocks space which helps you find bad stacked diamonds easier and you dont have to do the trap door thing every time you enter i cave....basically it takes as much time but with less blocks exposed...
