I just flew on a plane Thursday. I would suggest your carry-on bag have wheels that you can roll your bag down the aisle sideways. The aisles are getting smaller!

My husband is in his 43 year as a flight attendant and carryon is key! Wear your hiking boots on flight and heavy coat. You don’t want luggage to be cute, you want it to be functional and durable! Make it cute by adding your personal colorful luggage tag.

Love your info. As an experienced international traveller myself, I do care about the inner straps. Even more, I care that the wheels are spinners. Having to drag a bag behind if so much harder than pushing it along in front.

Thanks Laurie. Useful information. One note though: the trend for international travel is moving to smaller suitcases (20-21 inches). For now, American carriers are permitting 22 inch suitcases, however, overtime, that will more likely change..

I love suitcases. And Laura is correct.......Wheels are THE #1 important part of the suitcase. In my experience, Delsey has the best wheels. I have had Tumi, Samsonite and had many others over my 15 years of traveling weekly as a consultant. Wheels, wheel, wheels! Be sure you check them well. They will roll easy in the store when they are empty. But a full suitcase is different. Try it at home first before you travel. I guess I am the odd one because i do use the internal straps. They just seem to hold the miscellaneous items in place. If you need to have a suitcase that you do check, I recommend the hard side. I like these because they protect your items from the weather. Take a look at how your suitcase is left on the wet carts, the ramps loading the plane and sometimes just left sitting on the tarmac uncovered. But get a good one that can take a beating!

I recently purchased a set of Samsonite hard-sided luggage through Amazon and couldn’t be more thrilled! There were 3-pcs., the smallest being the carry-on. It was perfect for walking down the aisle of the plane, and stored in the overhead easily. For $230. For all 3 pieces I thought it was a real bargain.

I've carried my American Tourister carry-on for probably 30+ years, but now it's apparently a half inch too tall. AlaskaAir made me check it. I replaced it with an Osprey back pack. No wheels so no matter what, I can squish it into the sizing contraption at the airport. The straps take up less room than wheels, so I have more room on the interior of the bag. I feared that I'd get too fatigued carrying a pack (I'm an over 65 woman) but it's so comfortable I've had no problems.

Bravo to you! I am also 65+ and somewhat limited in strength & mobility, but I have recently got a pack from Timbuk2. While it doesn’t have the capacity of your Osprey, i can pack a great many necessities within, including the contents of my handbag. And slung across my back, i can carry a remarkable weight. Whatever else I need basically squishes into a zippered tote!

I certainly would check a bag at least sometimes but both my husband and I are victims of delayed luggage anywhere from 10 days to not receiving til we returned home 😩. So now we go carryon at least going. If I ever have to check my bag I am anxious and not happy about it. At least so far we have finally received our suitcases. We have even cross packed with each other and both were “lost”. We got those the night before our return home from Italy (at least ten days). I like four spinner wheels but find my Tumi with two wheels similar to your travel pro fits best in overheads. Thanks for all your tips. Happy and safe travels.

I've tried rolling clothes, packing cubes, and compression bags. Rolling the clothes works best for me. I lay one item over all rolled clothes and secure with the straps. Carry-on is the only way to go. I have a tough LLBean parachute nylon backpack/suitcase that has lasted for 10 years, 30 flights, and some serious hiking too. Perfectly balanced!

Hi Laurie,, first of all thank you so much fo making all these videos... i love the way you care so much about your viewers and share all of the tips in a really deep details. I love the way you keep posting photographs in between as an example that makes huge difference from other KZbinrs you really take time to do that and u love that.. whenever i am planning to travel somewhere i just open your relevant videos just to make my travel safe.. even though i am not traveling that much still i am addicted to watch all of your tips just because i want to learn too and i want to help and give tips others from my family members.. One request , could you make a separate videos in a detail of universal charger which includes phone chargers, curler iron machine etc.. i know you show charger in one of your videos but i want to know in a detail like what country takes which kind of charger and so that we know how to buy the perfect charger?
@TravelTipsbyLaurie
@TravelTipsbyLaurie 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I try hard to give excellent info in an excellent way. Chargers come in a kit if that helps; they're for each country. Maybe you could get one that you know has free shipping on returns just so you can feel and see. In other countries you need a converter, and I think some are combined with adapters. Adapters are what fits their plug; if you plug something into the adapter that is a heating element, that's when you need a converter. I don't travel internationally enough to adequately make a video tho.

Most luggage manufacturers say that their carry on luggage meets the 22×14×9 requirement, but if you read the fine print; most are 1/2" to an inch over; in at least one direction. I've just ordered an L.L. Bean Carry On Pullman Medium.

We fly primarily Southwest, and their carry-on size is slightly larger than the other airlines. I recently traveled with a hard shell suitcase, and I loved it. It was very light, and the way it’s designed, there is lots of room on both sides.

Great tips! My hard-sided carry-on from IT Luggage is my best travel purchase along with my Travelon dressy backpack that has lots of security features. The carry-on has a built in TSA lock, 4 double wheels, and expansion. The only time I've run into issues with my size compliant bag is when you end up on a "puddle jumper" with one of the regional affiliates that has teeny tiny overhead bins. In my experience, AC and WJ gate check at that point for free.

Useful tips here Laurie. Oh yes, I am the same with those zippers, they don't need to be cute. Tj Maxx is my go to and I too usually settle on either Samsonite or Swissgear. My Swissgear from 2014 ithough is a 20 inch with 6 inner compartments including built in shoe pockets and removable wet bag for liquids. Outer has 3 front pockets and side pocket for laptop which I never use for laptop. Surprisingly, Very efficient though inner space seemed limited I was able to pack for an 8 day Turks and Caicos trip in this carry on. Internal straps are a must, keeps it tidy.

I use packing cubes because they not only organize and keep things wrinkle free, but compresses and I can carry more in the same space. I think the straps couls be used as compression straps if you don't cube it. Also I'm from a small town and have the little "puddle jumpers" to take us to the hub airports and even though they check bags for free at the gate due to tiny overhead bins, I have missed connecting flights waiting for the gate checked bag from the plane. I always hold my breath until I board and have my bag with me.

I've used Travelpro for years and love it. The expansion feature allows you to shift from carryon only to a more accommodating checked bag in the event you want to come home with more than you left with or bring back items considered liquids that don't meet the 3.4 oz limits. I find it very versatile. I'm a strategic packer but love the option the extra 4" expansion gives me on the way home. This way I avoid stressing out how to handle things if I'm maxed out on space and don't want to have a 3rd piece to deal with. I also carry a strap with me that I can secure on the outside. Nice in case of a zipper malfunction (which has never happened) or if I want to squish everything down to stay within the size limits for overhead compartments. Plus, a colorful strap identifies your bag more easily if you do end up checking it.

I've tried other brands out of curiosity or because it was cute but always not liking it after travel usage. I always go back to TravelPro. One tip I have involving the zipper is to look at the seams where it is sewn to the fabric. This was a big deal when I worked for a knife company. My carry on used to easily be 100 - 150lbs full of display supplies for my job shows. The first thing that always went was the zipper seam. The best one has a rubber on top (usually seen on plastic luggage). Sometimes they have that on fabric luggage. The zipper is not only sewn to the fabric, but also the rubber piece. The piece is also usually sewn to the fabric. Thus it has three points of contact on both sides of the zipper. The second best is a zipper that is sewn to a fabric loop. That one has two points of contact for both sides. The worst zipper is the ones that are just sewn on directly to the fabric with no loop. The string breaks easily and you may end up with busted luggage. It also happens to be TSA's favorite if they feel the need to search your bag quickly since they can rip the seam quickly (they will).

Another Houstonian here. I do like this video, even if I have a different opinion on the matter of suitcase wheels. I found the TravelPro to be awkward for a disabled person to use. Yes, the wheels are very sturdy, but the case is not maneuverable for someone with an assertive device. The case does not turn smoothly when using an electric wheelchair or scooter. I had eBags Motherlode line and it's incredibly sturdy, carries bunches, is softsided, expands, has lovely handles and pockets, and, sadly, is as maneuverable as a TANK! Then there was the problem of storing all of either of them in my tiny apartment. I have now purchased Biaggi's Microfold Zipsack Boost. I haven't taken it on a plane but I love its four-wheeled spinning capability. The handle fits over my arm or is attached to my scooter and it turns, maneuvers, however I need it to. And it holds an unbelievable amount. I love that the underseat expands to carryon size and the carryon expands to a huge 27" duffel. My only worry is that they will be sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of travel. That will remain to be seen. However, I tested them with my scooter and found that both fold down into the size of a large novel, great in small apartments, cruise ships, and so forth. That and the way they move is what I'm nuts about.

Hi Laurie, thanks for all the tips, I watched several of your videos. One additional thing I watch out for is the weight of the carry-on case (and my bigger suitcase, for that matter). I‘m not worried about it being overweight, that‘s never been an issue. But due to back problems and lift restrictions I have to consider the weight. With cases that look the same there can be as much as 4-5 pounds of difference in weight. Also, for the same reason, ease of moving the thing, I like to get a case with 4 360 degree spinning wheels. A case with only 2 wheels that move in one direction only can be quite challenging.

You asked if anyone actually used the little straps inside the suitcase. Well I do. I travel for business between Melbourne and Sydney Australia, mainly staying in Sydney for two nights, but otherwise it's overnight I use the straps to hold down shirts, jumpers/sweaters and pyjamas etc. Then depending on how long am staying the open space will hold a suit and a sports jacket. But if it's cold weather, I wear a light coat, for warmth in Melbourne while traveling to the Airport, then pop it into the case when I arrive in the CBD in Sydney. Without those little straps, the shirts etc just end up in a messy pile. And if it is really cold weather in Sydney, I just keep my overcoat on, and because I always use those little straps, in the bottom of the carry-on luggage, my freshly ironed shirts remain flat and wrinkle free. Yes, I know all of the top grade Hotels have an iron in the room, or you can hang the clothes in the bathroom and turn on the hot shower to steam them. But I don't travel for pleasure and the time spent fiddling around with crumpled clothing, is the time that I could spend on another business call. So I think those useless little straps were invented by an Industrial Designer who had actually used the carry-on luggage for genuine Business Trips, and not holidays. Phil

I agree. You'd be surprised at how many do use them. I think also that suitcases do not pop open like they used to when Samsonite was the only suitcase line out there. Thank you for watching, Phil.

Thanks for your videos. I, actually, do use the inner straps. One of my suitcases can with a fairly thin hard but flexible sheet. So, to stop things moving around, I make like a suitcase sandwich and use it to hold everything in place and then pull the straps over it. For me, it really works.

Hi Laurie, I have enjoyed many of your videos--thank you. This video is 1-2 years old, but I just wanted to mention that many domestic carriers are limiting carry ons to 22x 14x 9, ( of course smaller for many carriers that fly only within Europe). Wheels and handles included. And I see personal items at 9x 10x17, (tho this varies a little more per carrier). This is also what Rick Steve's requires of all participants of his tours to use as well. Makes it challenging, lol! Oh, I just saw that one source you reference does say 22x14x9!!

You are excellent and your travel experience is a great thing you are sharing. This is my first time seeing your channel. I need to get a carry on suitcase and I was leaning toward a hard sided case, however your points against a hard side carry on are something to consider for sure. I still have a old samsonite large check in suitcase and it has the rollerblade style wheels and I think those are so much more durable. Thanks so much!!!

Those tiny "spinner" wheels are horrible as they break-off easily if you ever have to check your bag. Also, they're worthless for rolling the bag on rough pavement / surfaces (think cobblestones) if you have to walk to your hotel, and, a bag with spinners has 1-2 inches less interior space to make room for the spinners. For durability and maximizing space, the two-wheeled roll-aboards are much much better.
@Lady4Life
@Lady4Life 6 жыл бұрын
@@WakeUpAmerican000s I guess I have been lucky because I've never had any fall off. But I can see that, especially based on the quality of the wheels. I like them because it's easier to roll. And if the pavement is rough, you can pull it just like the ones with two wheels. You have options.
@pegasusquilts
@pegasusquilts 5 жыл бұрын
Rolling a bag on 4 wheels takes the weight off your shoulders, arm and back, which some of us need. It's even more helpful if your other item can ride safely on top, strapped to the extended handle. You can still pull the bag on just 2 when you need to. Not all of them are flimsy, take a look at the bag. Mine has gone up and down thousands of stairs and been checked dozens of times without incident, and it was s Samsonite I got for 89.00 at Ross.

I have been using a spinner for over 5 years without issues.. Have done several trips to UK relying on trains, the tube, taxis and walking cobblestone streets. A year ago took another couple to Wales and had them get spinners. Look for quality on the wheels. To me the most important feature whether you have 2 or 4 wheels. Once you go 4 you'll never go back

I frequently use the straps inside the bag, especially when the bag isn't completely stuffed. Everything stays put nice and neat. Expandability is handy, but as you mentioned, that expansion may make it tough to fit in the overhead bins. As a flight attendant, I'm always trying to fit a passenger's expanded bag into a bin...I've had to gate check bags because they didn't fit. Nobody is happy in that case.

Greetings from Houston! I only carry-on my valuables-Laptop/tablet, jewelry, etc. so I use an under-seater bag . I fly Southwest most of the time so checked bags are not an issue. I have gone thru several brands of luggage over the past 20 years. Atlantic brand was my favorite for many years. When bag weight became an issue, I searched for more light-weight luggage. I bought "cute" luggage from Marshall's. It was horrible to travel with. I used it one time then sold it & went back to my Atlantic bags. Then I bought Samantha Brown from HSN. Loved it; got many compliments but the under-seater could not hold my 15" laptop - deal breaker. I searched high & low and found Ricardo of Beverly Hills luggage. The 16" under-seater carry-on has a neoprene laptop sleeve that snaps in place! I was a happy girl. This a brand I see in Tuesday Morning. I bought mine from Pennys. Smooth-as-silk 360 wheels on the larger pieces, really light weight and all the handles & pockets you talked about. I've found a winner. I gave the Samantha Brown bags to my mother & I can finally ditch the Atlantic luggage I'm still holding on to...I still love it so much...It's green paisley carpetbag fabric...so functional, but it's going in the garage sale this spring. Oh, and I use the interior straps to hold my packing cubes in place.

Thank you for this great channel. It's great to see an experienced woman posting this information. I love your tips, etc. and have been using most of them through the years. That being said I find a 22" bag to be my car trip, large suitcase. International carryon sizes are often smaller and lighter. My favorite luggage is 16" to 20". I would love for you to include the weight of your packed carryon bags and personal items in your posts. From what you pack, other than your make up (I'm a 1970's girl...we didn't do make up), it is not far off from what I pack so I'm not sure why you need the large suitcase. Weight is very much a concern for me. I want to keep my carryon at about 20 lbs. and my PI around 6 lbs with my dslr. I travel solo a lot and need to handle my own luggage. Keep up the good work!
