What are the different types of skirts: mini, midi, maxi, pencil skirts, etc?
Which skirt fits which body type?
This video shows the 3 parameters when choosing a skirt: waist, hemline and fullness.
I refer to the main body types: pear, apple, inverted triangle, rectangle & hourglass. Petite and tall women are also mentioned, but if you are petite or tall, you are still (also) a body type.
Update: since your style should not dependent on short-lived trends, I created a free PDF guide called 7 RULES TO TIMELESS STYLE. Get yours here: www.justineleconte.com/timeless 😘
Thumbs up if you liked this video!
Any question or tip? Comment below.
New videos: Wednesday 5pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time).
Take care!
Justine

I have two "pencil shaped" skirts which are in stretchy fabric (one knitted, one jersey). Not as classy as the original but they do give a bit of both; the shape, but not the problem.

Yes, but I also hate that I (technically) can't wear a skirt to work. It's like pants, mini-skirt, or bust. I find this interesting because I wear skirts all the time as a 5'0 super-skinny pear. I tend to like the mermaid skirts with the high waist that flare mid to low thigh but land at the knee. I just think (for my body type) a super-snatched waist and above the knee is all (I) really have to abide by.

I wish that mini trend would finally end. In stores almost all skirts and dresses are mini, but rest are maxi. Almost nothing in middle around knee length. If there are knee length then for some reason they are much more expensive and mostly meant for older woman. Here on streets I see most woman and girls wearing knee length, but mini are left only for few rare exception events. Why popular designers don't care about what most woman are looking for. I guess woman need to start sew them self to get some skirt and dress in length they need. At least if skirts would be longer, then its simple to shorten them to mini, but can't make from mini midi. Same goes with skinny jean trend, they are everywhere. When some brand release their new jean styles and say there is choice I laugh, because they all are same, they all are skinny :) My rant is over. Thank you for video!

I'm friends with DIY and sometimes I don't mind to sew something :) I prefer to purchase already made clothing, because then I can try it on and see do I want that final result. When sewing can't always predict how it will look when done. But I wonder why shops are full with mini if in streets, jobs, schools, party I see almost everyone wearing midi, sometimes maxi. Mini I see so rarely.

I am going to school to become a teacher and I love wearing skirts but obviously can't wear a mini skirt to school! So I love the knee length high waisted skirts which are impossible to find in stores! So I shop at resale stores because I can find a lot of high waisted things (since it was such a trend in the 70s and lots of high waisted pants in the 80s and 90s) and then I hem my own skirts since I am petite! :) Just a thought! Another bonus is that you will never run in to another girl wearing the same outfit as you ;)

I'm super petite (4 foot 9) and I've found the best style for me is a low cut or bardot style top paired with a circle skirt that hits just about on or above my waist that goes to about mid calf. Very flattering on me. Either that or a loose blouse and a pencil skirt

You are so fun to watch! My favorite skirts are mini skirts or floor length skirts and anything with a high waist. I am a petite rectangle so the mini skirts are great for making me look taller but the maxi skirts are great for comfort and evening summer dates for a flowy and feminine look. Always high waisted for me. It is classic and comfortable and makes me look like I have a narrower waist.

I adore your videos. You talk about clothes and body types in such a not-superficial/idiotic/bimbo/peroxyided/materialistic ways that I can actually learn about clothing without the anxiety to fit clothes that only make my unconfortable. I have quite a nice body shape but I don't fit standard sizes in my country ( very big boobs for a rather normal chest, tiny waist and slim long legs but with annoying "love handles"), so every now and then I saw my own dresses or modify the pieces I buy. I'm an economist which means I really know little about fabrics, measurements, etc. Thank god I found you! I would like you tu know how much of a relief you've been to me. So far I've donated clothes that just wouldn't work for me and when I go shopping at least I have a clue what I'm looking for and what's a waste of money. THAN YOU!!!

I have found a local business that keeps my measurements on file, and makes my skirts to order. Expensive, but worth every penny! Depending on the fabric, I can select a "pencil" skirt (really closer to an A-line) or a "swing" skirt. I wear the pencil skirts just above the knee, and the swing skirts at mid-knee. I am an average height, somewhat over weight woman with nice legs. Skirts are so much more flattering and comfortable to me than pants! I am still wearing skirts that I've owned for 20 years.

Hi Justine. Thank you for this topic. I wish to focus on the word: silhouette. As the drawings are done face on, it sadly does not capture the body shape that has a "belly projection". I suffer from this. Normally I live in trousers, and recently I found it very useful that side seam zipper trouser choices with Lycra material are available. This resolves the "pregnant appearance" somewhat. But when it comes to skirts, apart from holding breath in, (trust me it does not last very long!!!!) and undoing the zippers whilst driving and making 4 -5 times mistake of getting out of the car, having forgotten that the zipper is undone (widely embarrassing for me and shocking to many other spectators), I wonder if you could capture body shape and skirt choice from a side on drawing perspective as well. Many thanks. Bahar (sweet tooth is my middle name!)

ZBE my figure is like what you describe. Hourglass from the front, a little startling in silhouette. I do well with a high waisted A-line skirt or empire waisted a-line dress. Pencil skirts are a disaster, no redemption for them. Maxi skirts really depend on the cut and material- flowy works, especially with a high waist and a snug top, but a clingy, jersey knit is (for me) only OK as pajamas, when no one is around! Good luck!

Oh wow, same here! I look 'normal' from the front but I hate looking at my side profile in the mirror! If I could selectively eliminate the pudge on my stomach area, I would feel much more confident in crop tops, etc. There's always a trade off I suppose. Was a skinny girl once upon a time. Didn't have much going on in the chest area in high school. Now I'm an adult and that's changed, but I want my flat tummy back 😂

I'm slim, but very conscious about the size of my hips, thighs, and legs. I've always perceived them as a bit "chubbier" than the rest of my body, that is way I always pick a-line tea-length midi dresses and skirts in order to camouflage most of my insecurities lol I would never dream of wearing a tighter outfit on the lower part.

I'm a bit confused at this point... What about the mid-calf length?
@L.Spencer
@L.Spencer 7 жыл бұрын
That is the length I like but it's very hard to find anywhere. Skirts seem to be super short or floor length now. I'd like to see women's 50's style come back, it was classic.

I am by no means an expert, but I am some what knowledgeable on vintage fashion and sewing. A mid-calf skirt, also known as a "midi skirt" or "tea length," falls any where between an inch or two about the ankle and below the knee. Any shorter and it becomes knee-length, any longer and it becomes a maxi-skirt. Midi skirts are usually very full and are cut as either semi-circle or full-circle. The classic skirts of the 1950's were basically all midi, full-circle skirts. They look best when the sit at the natural waist, and make your waist look small, but the fullness may deter some people as it can accentuate large hips. Many midi skirts, especially those in a vintage style, are meant to be worn with a crinoline or tulle underneath to fill out the skirt, and give it that classic, vintage "poof." However, sometimes midi skirts are cut like pencil skirts, that is, they are essentially elongated pencil skirts. These are known as "wiggle dresses" or "wiggle skirts." For more ideas, I recommend visiting A Vintage Vanity or Cherry Dollface and watching their sewing/vintage fashion videos for more info on midi skirts. Hope this helped! :)

Everything Casey Jones said, with the added point that mid-calf skirts cut your visual leg-line so they will make you look shorter. Works on people who are very tall, otherwise could be pulled off with very high heels, but petite people might want to avoid altogether.

Justine I am 5' 3" in height. Petite size 8 or 10 or 12 some times depending on different designers sizes . Mostly small or medium.I have a hour glass figure. But with a belly which I hide most of the time. Not so very curvy like Kim Kadasian . Since I am short tends to look fat. One thing that I can't seem to do is wear anything with a waist .specially dresses. Or belts. (Unless with jeans)They just don't stay in place. It pushes up. If I am wearing spanxs it's even worse. I feel so frustrated. Shift dresses, dresses without waist sits nicely. There must be so many woman with issues like this. Please address on your future videos issues that woman with belly ,short fat woman Have. Specially woman who have had kids with not very young bodies, who are waiting to hide so many flaws.love all your videos. Would appreciate you doing a few videos for mature woman.

Michelle Ranamukage I have a pear figure at the moment, also very short and I have a very defined waist to hip ratio (6.8 eeek) And what I found works the best is to get a skirt that is not a stretchy material, and has shorts built in. But keep in mind it has to fit your body exactly, so a tailor might be ideal. I have a skirt like this that I bought from china and luckily it fit me perfectly. And it's a mini skirt with ruffles.

Why not get a piece of clothing tailored to fit you? If you can’t find anything that fits then this seems to be the most practical solution

Same here 5'3" with a tummy and not excessive curves. I've always had trouble finding flattering looking and sitting dresses and skirts. A line sort of does work best and NO belts. And I'm exactly between petite and standard sizing. 😕

Thank you! I often think discourse around body shapes ignores non-apples with big bellies! It feels like if we have them we should not bother thinking about how to dress nicely. I am an hourglass with a big belly, morphing into apple shape as I age, but not quite there yet.

Michelle Ranamukage Some of, okay many of the prettiest dresses I have seen are in clothing shops for larger size women even short ladies. Find small stores that carry clothes from unknown but brilliant designers in your area. They are budget friendly. I love feminine dresses like these stores carry, but I'm tall and thin and they don't carry them in my size so I made my own. Wish you and the ladies that replied to you the best success in finding the perfect clothes.

Thanks Justine! What do you think about maxi skirts/dresses on petite thin girls? I haven't tried one because I guess it would look huge on me (if I could find one that doesn't rub the floor lol)... But then you mentioned J-Lo... So I'm not sure anymore! I think they look extraordinary on tall girls :) I wish I could wear one

I think a maxi dress with less "flowy" (like a jersey one, which then can stretch when you walk) can look fabulous also on petite ladies! Also, I'd go for solid colors rather than patterns - just a feeling but it is a matter of personal taste, I believe.

Kim Brasseur I am both petite and thin as well, and all of my most flattering skirts are maxi to floor length :) I've found they actually elongate my my silhouette when the skirt is in a slimmer cut and a movement-friendly fabric. The stretchy jersey Justine mentioned works well, as do wrap skirts. And you may find that what's intended as an ankle length skirt on an average height person gives you the right length if you're willing to wear a little heel (so the skirt ends up being floor-length on you).

Justin, why you haven't mentioned midi length skirt?
@Weltraumfee
@Weltraumfee 7 жыл бұрын
I don't know why she didn't mention it, but maybe it's because midi length is not the most flattering length for most women. It makes your legs appear wider than they are because you're hitting them at their widest part below the knee. Your brain will automatically continue that smaller to wider shape and assume some very thick legs. Most people don't want that. It can also make your legs appear even shorter, as can a pencil skirt below the knee.

Think this depends on how tall you are. I’m short so would avoid this altogether unless I wore heels. It would be lovely on a tall person though.

I'm a pear shape, petite lady and overweight. I'm always struggling to find a skirt that makes me comfortable, because of my belly and my butt lifts the skirt. What should I do?
@LeDubKitty
@LeDubKitty 7 жыл бұрын
VicVaporub Skorts. Im not overweight but Im a pear with a ridiculously small waist and a big butt. All my skirts ride all the way up, so I found non-stretchy skorts that fit my body shape work. But it may be hard finding some that do fit your body measurements perfectly. Since they arent stretchy they have to fit you like a glove.

I'm late, don't know if the info is still needed - absolutely yes to skater-style skirts, but pay attention to the fabric. Softer, flowier materials will make the area look narrower since they won't add bulk, but they will also highlight every curve, so this may acentuate the shape of your belly or butt. Stiffer fabrics that will hold their shape will prevent the actual curves of your belly or butt from being visible, but they will add bulk because the fabric will stick out some from your body. Try on a bunch of skirts in different fabrics until you find a compromise between bulk and body visibility you're happy with, and then make a note of the fabric used in the skirt so you can search for it later. You should also look for it to sit at your natural waist so it won't cut across your belly. And most importantly, you need to pay close attention to the length. Ideally for your situation, you'd want a skirt that hits JUST above the very bottom of your knee-cap. Even just a slight peek of the knee is enough to keep the legs from looking cut-off, so it won't make you look shorter. And hopefully it will also give you enough length so that when you move or sit, the skirt doesn't ride up too high. Also, if you are comfortable with the actual shape of your body being somewhat visible, pencil-style skirts are actually a GREAT option for pear shapes. Keeping the cut of the clothing close to the body creates a slimming effect because it adds very little bulk - the added bonus is that you can get away with wearing a stiffer fabric in this cut without making yourself look heavier because the cut itself isn't adding any width. So that would potentially be the best of both worlds - a slim-cut style that doesn't add width to your butt or hips, made in a stiffer fabric that glides over your belly instead of clinging to it, for example jacquard.
