What's your favorite color?? Do you feel that it fits your personality? Note: other colors are made by mixing those I mentioned. E.g. pink is red + white. Beige is brown + white. If you google a color name, you will get its CMYK reference, so you will know which colors are exactly in it :-)

i love so many colors even though i wear mainly black (which is a tone not a color) bc it's very easy to find in all styles, textures, prices etc but i love purple (all shades), baby pink, nature green (not neon), bordeaux and blue!

Oi! I think I'm quite schizophrenic when it comes to colors. Black and grey, black and brown, cream and brown. All purples, from fuchsia to eggplant and everything in between. Turquoise and purple or blue. All greens (mostly combined with purples). A hint of pink. Bordeaux.... I'm all about textures in fabric or leather/suede, I love to combine different textures in different colors. Creativity is important ;-) inside and out.

"Pink for princesses" is a modern development (1940s). Pink was a boy color for centuries before that. All those painted portraits of children in pink dresses are actually princes.

"I think human beings need green in their lives. People who live in large cities never see any tree, never walk barefoot on the grass get depressed. I'm pretty convinced of that." I 100% agree. I realize it every time I go to a big city that has no kind of natural green integrated into the day to day life. Just after a few days, I feel a big sense of sadness. When I return home, I feel the mental and physical need to immerse myself into my garden...just sitting on the grass and looking at the trees can be enough. It's really, really important to have natural green in our lives.

Annalisa Bagatella I have a pair of kelly green flats.I love to throw them on to add a pop of color. I live in the country where there is LOTS of green. My house is next door to a working farm, so I love when the crops are just starting to grow and are a vibrant color green. I have lived in several big cities when I was in my 20's, and as fun as that was... I just loved the smell of fresh cut grass and flower picking in my garden to make beautiful arrangement for the house.

When I lived in Paris, I noticed that (after years there) all my clothes and everything else I was attracted to and bought was GREEN! Every place has a different colour of light and the light in Paris is grey/yellow. (In the So. of France, it's really soft; blue/pink). I now live in America, in the Northwest (Seattle region) and the colour of light here is blue/green. I still buy green everything but now, instead of all tones of green, I only collect Olive. I need the Yellow as there's not much sun here. Colours are fascinating!!!

As an artist with a great interest in psychology, I really enjoyed this. Tells me something about myself--always tending to choose blues, sometimes purple or green. My father had a paint store; he'd often come home with a story about how a woman came in and said she wanted to see wallpaper samples. He'd pull some out and be amazed that he immediately showed her purple ones....she was wearing purple....

I had a friend with a strong metaphysical bent who believed we needed all the colors in our lives and each day of the week she wore a different color in a weekly pattern starting with red and going through the colors of the spectrum to purple. She was an amazing influence in my life. She is long gone from the earth now.

When people ask me what is my favorite color, I always cringe b/c the real answer is so complicated! I'm always tempted to say "are you asking about my favorite color to wear? to decorate with? to photograph? on other people? overall?" because the answer is so different in each context. There are colors that I love but simply cannot wear b/c they make me look older or just plain ill. For example, a rich beautiful purple/indigo. So I always answer with "blue" but I mostly wear whites, grays, and blacks. For me, I wear whatever color I need my mentality to be in for that day (as opposed to letting my mood dictate my choices). I also apply this backwards psychology to the texture of fabrics as well. Do I need to be focused, productive and efficient? Or am I allowed to be relaxed, soft and playful? Anyway, merci for this video! 💕💖💕

That's me, too. I would add that, where clothing is concerned, there is definitely skin tone to consider. My daughter looks radiant in white; my instructor's face turns a ghastly grey when wearing a white blouse. It matters, so find out what colors your skin tone likes and dislikes and choose clothing accordingly.

Grey! I love it too. When I was young, my mother despaired of me because it was my favorite colour and she loved bright colours. But I felt too exposed, too visable wearing bright colours. Also, I wanted to wear the colour, not have the colour wear me. Grey allows that. With age, I've come to wear stronger colours but I still love muted tones. Grey is ELEGANT. It's about balance. Oh, and also... there are many, many different shades of grey!

Love blue, white, black and red! I can say that in my culture (Russian) there are certain combinations of colors that have their connotations. F.ex. white top+black bottom reads super formal and rather boring because that is the colors everybody had to wear for formal occasions at school. It is also what receptionists or bank tellers typically wear. I often avoid this combination, if I don't want to be mistaken for somebody's intern or secretary. Khaki color has very strong associations with the military (unlike sandy or black, like in some other cultures), so can look a bit too aggressive for some occasions. Red has all the connotations you named. But scarlet is also the color of the Communist movement, and the revolution, so items like red shirts and blouses, red badges, or, especially, little red scarves (like what Pioneers wore), remind people of Communism, revolution, etc. Red+black are very closely tied with rebellion, provocation, etc. Black is also the color favored by many subcultures which are still alive. So a total black look might look a bit too "gothic" for some, or just too provocative and depressing at the same time (this is why many intellectuals and artists like this look). I'd say, if you want to be perceived neutrally, wear grey, cream, green, and blue colors. Finally, lots of gold (especially thick gold jewelry) is seen as a sign of not just bad taste but also dark past. Gangsters in the 90s loved wearing thick gold chains and rings (and putting heavy jewelry on their girlfriends). A typical gangster look would be dark shirt with thick gold jewelry. That's probably why Russian men won't wear dark or brightly colored shirts.

Great comment! I've lived in both Serbia and Romania, and can say that it's all very similar in this region. I wonder if it's also the case in Russia - at some point in Serbia in the 2000s it became OK for manly men (heh) to wear pastel or bright pink and baby blue and so on. Mainly in very tight fitting T-shirts, often with V-necks, to show off a gym-toned torso. It's almost as if the mainstream macho borrowed from the gay fashion... Anyway, it's not a very good look in my opinion :)

So much depends on whether the yellow resembles that of lemon skin, lemon pulp, peeled banana or peeled mango, and whether we're talking about clothing or home decor. And is it offset by white, red/orange or black? I once read that yellow is the hardest color for the human eye to process, also the best color to grab attention for an ad or a street sign. My favorite kitchen wall color was mango yellow, but a top in the same color made me look and feel awful, while one in a slightly cooler shade - I call it summer yellow - made me feel so good that whether it flattered my skin tone didn't matter because it made me so happy I smiled all the time, which is definitely a better look. A step cooler and it would have been lemon yellow, which looks great on lemons, but anywhere else looks so acidic to me I can sense my mouth puckering most unattractively.

Very bright colours are important in my culture (indigenous American). Personally I really like the combination of blue, green, and orange but I like more muted or lighter versions than their pure primary and secondary versions. I also use a lot of grey. I think for me it reminds me of the waters of the Gulf of Mexico where I grew up and the sunset sky above it. As a child anytime we were at the water we'd stop and watch the sunset over it.

I wear almost every color, and coral pink is my favorite, but blue is my favorite color to wear. It in no way has to do with the fact that every time my whole outfit is blue my brain can't stop playing "I'm Blue" by Eiffel 65. It's just more flattering on me and suits my personality better. I'm surprised you didn't mention that Queen Victoria is the one who made white the bridal dress norm when she married Albert.

No wonder why I used to wear (and still do) so much black, I felt emotionally safe in it! I was afraid to wear color because I wasn't confident in my emotions. My most favourite color is green, I love it. Can't help it 💚👒🧃

Hi Justine, a few years ago I became aware that I am synesthetic - specifically, I have color-graphemic synesthesia, which means that I perceive colors when I think of letters, words, numbers, etc. I also perceive color with different tastes and sounds. Color always has and always will be such an important part of my life, and seems to code the way I think. Over time I think I have developed my own personal associations with certain colors, probably based on my own experiences. My favourite colors are very saturated blues, purples, and greens. I tend to dislike brighter colors, especially yellow and orange, and find them too aggressive and harsh. It's definitely interesting how color affects our perception, and should be studied more in psychology! Ps: If you are synesthetic in any way, shout out to me! Also, my As are cobalt blue, my B's are tomato red, my Cs are cyan blue, and my Ds are earth brown. What are yours?! Justine, if you're still there, your name is plum purple! Mine (Jessica), is eggplant purple!

Justine Leconte officiel I'm not sure! Could be because the first letter J is purple to me, and that affects the word. J = plum purple, U = burnt orange, S = dark blue, T = leaf green, I = dark yellow, N = dark pink, E = bright yellow. I know it makes no logical sense but it's just an automatic perception for me! :)

Jessica Viau - I also have synesthesia. Justine is bright yellow and Jessica is a greenier yellow. I also only discovered this in recent years and didn't understand that other people perceive the world differently. And one of my children has it, and the other does not. Plus, I love orange (and I do not own any blue, red or purple clothes). Yes, and sounds / smells are in colour and time is positional. Fascinating!

your skintone may need warmer tones (darker green) instead of limegreen for an example. Don't buy that everyone has to have cold colors only people with colder skintone should. I can't look good in any of the colors she showed, I need warm tones in everything because of my eye colors, my hair, and most importantly my skin tone (which makes me look better in gold then silver meanwhile cold skintone looks better in silver)

I've always been attracted to jewel tones, ruby, emerald, sapphire, amethyst, peridot. When I shop for clothes, these are the colors that speak to me, and same in decor. But I also love purple, turquoise and tiffany blue--both are very similar--and mint green. I like yellow a lot and have it in my decor, including tiffany blue, and raspberry. The only two colors I do not like at all are brown and orange, even though I've been told I look great when I wear it--did have a blouse in orange, many years ago. I wear some black but like white, I find them both so boring. I've been described by friends as serious, reserved and shy, at first, if I don't know the people well. But then, once I get to know the people around me well, I'm very outgoing, fun and even sassy.

As I noted a few weeks back, I have rather difficult coloring- auburn hair, brown eyes, ivory skin with freckles. My very vest colors a a deep orange and moss green. I'm also good in tangerine and a bright lime. I can wear red well if it is a warm red. I don't do blue well, and grey is right out. I'm very aware of how I look in various colors, and the 'vibe' I carry in them. I think that as much as a formal color psychology, it is a matter of understanding yourself. If you are confident and radiate that, you could be wearing sackcloth and ashes and still look great! But I know that I dress to deliberately affect my mood. If I'm not feeling well, I won't wear black or a dark green. It'll be marigold yellow or orange or bright tomato red. And I live in Portland Oregon- we have long, drizzly winters. I tend to have Seasonal Affective Disorder- the weather depresses me in a clinical sense. so my bedroom and my office are decorated in warm colors, It helps- a lot. And the fabric stash in my studio is mostly reds and golds and oranges, so if I'm working on a blue project, I have to brave the fabric store or go online. And that is dangerous!

I was not expecting this video would make that much sense. Normally these things are as you mentioned very culturally based, but the example of red being the first to see because of the physics really explains why the color is seen as aggressive or sexual. I like the little insight you gave into French language when you said, "We say in French that this person is my tree." I think the corresponding phrase in English would be this person is my rock. If you are my rock you keep me stable and you support me. :) How cool! Thank you for the color psychology!! How fascinating! I was definitely unconsciously doing that with my wardrobe. I've always wanted to wear brighter colors, but have always been aware of their affects on others. My desire to appear professional has trumped my desire to appear fun. So I tend to gravitate towards very neutral grays and blacks or browns with a delicate splash of muted pink. This was eye-opening and candid!

My home is very small (4 rooms). Hubby and I decided it was best to find a single colour for our walls, so we chose a very pale pink to help uplift our mood (we both suffer with depression). It works well for us but I remember visiting stately homes that would have colour themed rooms e.g. "the blue bedroom", and if I had a large home that's what I'd do.

It depends too on WHERE the color is. If it is up against your face, you don't want to wear something that makes you look ill, and the wrong "right" color can do just that. Yes, I do choose colors that make me feel better, and that will give a good impression for whatever I'm after, but it is not necessarily calculated, and it is never JUST about other people's perceptions. For example, other people have loved how I look in brown or tan, but I don't give them the opportunity to see me wearing it any more, because it makes me FEEL like a drab, homely non-entity. I leave browns to the people who glow in them because they love them! And I glow in my favorite teal or periwinkle blue! LOL

Yes the colours we thrive in change over time. I still wear brown but there was a time it didn't look good, my skin was more olive looking these days its more neutral so I can wear a cool brown no problems! I don't tend to wear a lot of pattern but this evening I'm wearing a light grey sweater with pink fluffy hearts on it. It's a great choice if I'm feeling a bit flat. Or if I'm feeling unwell which is today. It makes me feel cosy and cared for and it's only a sweater!

What I really noticed about you on this video is how balanced the saturation of your lipstick color is to the saturation of your natural eye cornea. Makes your look fresh and natural looking. When lipstick is more or less intense than someone’s eyes, that looks out of whack.... which I guess is why someone might ramp up eye makeup intensity/shading if wearing lipstick that would otherwise overpower one’s eyes?

Thank you, Justine! Great video about colors. As I live in Sweden and black is a favorite color here I am really sick of it already! Imagine hundreds of people wearing only black around you for 9 winter month! It's already cold and rainy country, that makes me depressed. I always thought that it's the worst choice ever for a blond/blue eyes person which looks so great in many shades of blue, grey and beige. WHY??? It is a matter of laziness, lack of taste and a knowledge in my opinion, it's just an easy and safe choice as you said. By the way, black also highlights dark circles under your eyes and makes you look older. =( I am a typical Eastern European woman with a porcelain white skin, big green eyes, brown hair. Colors which fits me perfectly are a military/olive green, chocolate brown, purple as a plum, all kind of reds, peach (red/orange mix), bordo, navy and coral. Combinations or black&white, navy&white looks really chick on me especially with a red lipstick. What is your designer opinion? (Actually I always wanted to be a fashion designer and I was told many times how great taste I have, unfortunately that dream didn't come true, but a sense of taste and a style is always going to be with me. I am a classy lady, that comes from my mom and I am very grateful for that. I was wearing classic clothes (mostly my mom's) from 16 years old. =))

He was notoriously moody and quite strict and unpredictable but he always always wore a black long sleeved shirt, fitted black pants, black boots, a black doctors bag, and his ponytailed hair. Slightly Karl Lagerfeld-y. I honestly dont know how he did it, walking across our huge open campus where its constantly 30°C hahah

Well I wear many different colors but I love the contrast of black and red the most. I avoid wearing yellows as I always look jaundiced, white because it always gets dirty too easily, I like deep greens like forest or hunter but avoid lime or pea. Otherwise there is no telling what colors I may mix and match.

My husband prefers that I dress in a colorful manner and that has been commented on by my friends many times over the years. Sometimes it surprises me. I can see auras. I gravitate to white and pastels.

My favourite colour is yellow, but I like wearing earthy colours (nude, green, blue) and of course black and white.

Hello Justine! Right now my wardrobe has rose quartz pink, blush tones, blues (denims), indigo, royal blue, olive green, teals, a little green, turquoise blues, mustard yellow, ( I always hv to hv yellow somewhere). Speaking of cultural traits, in India no woman from any strata of society will hv a 'neutral' or 'solid' colour only wardrobe. Colourful clothes are very much an everyday (and for festivities). Women wear both, bright patterns on some days and monochromatic on others. But I agree with one thing, the Indian palette for traditional wear is clearly based on colourful, in pleasing tones & prints whether bright or subtle.

This was helpful, but as an West African, I can tell you we love our bright colors & embroidery. And wearing black is seen as being depressing, lol. But what would be your advice to us that want to wear our traditional colors, but working in the West?

Merci !

I have always had an intense hatred for the color yellow. And people always say "but it's such a happy color". So I love that you also mention the negative connotations of colors, because, to me, yellow is obnoxious and unstable.
