I was a late adopter to dots on pistols and it was frustrating at first. It took me months of dry firing 20 min a day to be able to get comfortable. What really sold me was when ran one in an advanced defensive pistol class and things got “dynamic”. Shooting 15 yards and beyond, moving while shooting, shooting a moving target, ability to threat focus, awkward positions, etc… that’s where the dot starts to really shine. That being said, I still think it’s a nice to have and not a must have for the average concealed carrier.

A retired Delta operator hosting a great channel (hint, “Basic Dude Stuff”), waxed-on about a logical way to manage red dots. He suggested drawing the gun high & close to one’s eyesight, and then punching it straight forward at a slight upward cant, dropping the angle down onto the target. That will bring the dot into sight without having to hunt for it. Trigger manipulation achieves the surprise break by full extension. Once the dot is on target, it does not need to be centered in the field of view; centering it wastes time.

Thanks but if the .2 millisecond difference gets me killed, so be it. I'm not an operator and I would definitely feel better knowing my dot is actually on my target!

@@private8559 Thanks for your feedback. Truth be told, the entirety of the shooting communities are nothing more than a loose collective of ideas from personal trial & error experience that work to varying degrees for various individuals. It's a take the best & leave the rest proposition. I have invested a good amount of dry practice with red dots, and it's apparent there are added challenges, particularly when shifting between different guns that also use different red dot systems. I like the method Patrick McNamara uses since it is an effective, sure-fire way to acquire the dot since the dot sweeps down into the field. Understand that I'm only canting the gun to a very shallow upward angle; to a bystander they would hardly perceive any tilt (moreover, a maximum downrange trajectory would require a substantial ~ 20 degree elevation above the horizon). Also, once the "pointing-in" presentation sequence begins, it all happens in the blink of an eye...potentially getting startled wouldn't seem to be my biggest priority...getting that dot on target fast trumps all else. Another method I've tried with very good results is to simply ignore the dot altogether by initiating an iron sight picture (using my backup sights, which I believe is essential when a red dot system is used). Invariably the dot will come into view to where its overwhelming brilliance immediately pulls my focal shift to it. And I don't worry if the dot isn't centered in the center of the field of view. I only care that it's on target which is when I'll take the shot.
@KH-rt3ef

That’s honestly one of the best draw techniques out there. Minus the surprise trigger break; indexing should be done against the frame, not the trigger guard, and emphasis should be put on deliberate trigger manipulations. The intent being to prevent a negligent discharge. If your natural point of aim is not good with the way you grip your gun, learn more ways to grip your gun. You will probably end up with a hybridized style that works well for you, and your dot will be easier to find.

@@jessegpresleyWell I'm pretty sure MAC has more than enough qualifications to speak to irons and RDS all day everyday, the guy is about as knowledgeable as anyone running a gun can be and he actually did it when it mattered, and therefore more qualified than guys who are competitive shooters. Paper targets don't shoot back and the stressors of gun fighting is a real thing and range shooting is just practicing.

Great concept with the thumb pointing to the target, thanks! Unrelated question: I am thinking of AIWB carry and was originally looking at the SIG P365 family and Taurus GX4 TORO. I recently learned about both manufacturers having lawsuits filed against them for models shooting without a trigger pull. While it wasn't the same models I mentioned that did this, what are your thoughts about which manufactures' platforms are trustworthy enough to place in an area of such vulnerability? Is there/should there be a question of ethics in supporting the platforms of SS/T as both companies have dodged responsibility to those that were injured or to families that lost a loved one due to the alleged malfunctions?

Kyle Miller The flashlight bandwagon is just that, all it takes is one person and a video and it's the super cool thing to do. Unless a person is LE or really out at night a lot there's no need. Many do it for the added weight to help control recoil, and it does help a little. Now days every handgun review has a flashlight just about. Why because it's the bandwagon, everyone wants to be a super cool. As for me I have one on my nightstand handgun. Again I am not out on the town at night so for me no need at all.

Been shooting a pistol for about 3 years, hit the range about once a week - you might call me "intermediate". I just started shooting a Walther PDP with a red dot - this video was definitely helpful. But I have a question for Justin that's maybe a little off-topic. I noticed that his grip looks a little different from most shooters I've seen (online and in person). Specifically: 1) The index finger of his support hand seems to be wrapped around the "45-degree" bend in the front of the trigger guard - almost a Mas Ayoob "wedge hold". 2) His support thumb is pointing right at the target (as he said in the video), right along the slide - and his wrist is rolled forward and "locked" as you often hear people say you should do. But more interesting (to me) is that the thumb joint and part of the thenar ("meat") of his support hand looks to be really high on the slide. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - on the contrary. I'd love to hear Jason talk about these aspects of his grip (and grip in general). AND - it might be interesting to have Mike Seeklander weigh in too (so we get both Young Guns at the same time) - I've found Mike's videos on grip to be very helpful.

Very helpful video from a great channel, but I'd be ashamed to have prospective first-time gun-owners read the comment section. Seeing the personal insults being hurled between proponents of the different sides of the red-dot question does little to convince anyone that we pro-carry folks are level-headed individuals who can be trusted when we have a lethal weapon literally at our fingertips.

Or train consistency; operate the same controls across different platforms. Red dots don’t do a ton of super different things like guns themselves might; the red dot footprint on the gun itself may dictate which optic you can use… Otherwise, I’d personally just stick with the hardiest optic that has convenient battery access, that I can co-witness with my iron sights (if I can’t see my irons, I don’t even want it); ie, if I customized all my slides, I’d personally customize them for the same optic. And not a fad optic with design flaws that will be engineered out, because then I’d have a scuffed up slide with nothing to put on it. A sound optic with good engineering, that will withstand trends and time. Hopefully those considerations help.

If you can, keep the mounting height somewhat consistent. If it varies dramatically it'll take some time to adjust to compete on the same level. If you have let's say a low mounted rds without a plate like a milled Glock derivative and then switch to a Beretta adding a plate, a rds with a large body and the usual height over bore of the 92 series, you'll have to move it differently to your line of sight.

@@donovanchilton5817 I have red dots on many of my pistols (none of them 1911’s) so your insult is uneducated (also Im 44). What I have found after thousands of rounds is just what I said. One handed, laying on the ground for instance, it is very difficult to find the dot, and the smaller the dot like my 407k on my G43x (primary carry gun), the harder it is still. I love red dots, especially with my astigmatism, and they are faster and more accurate when standing and using two hands. But I cannot guarantee I will be able to use my gun in that manner during an attack. So it is a real concern for me.
