Ive had to use my gun before in self defense my personal protocol was simple. Unload and make safe my firearm. Separate the magazine from the firearm. Lock the chamber open set both the magazine and the firearm in plain sight a minimum of 20 feet away from me with the magazine and firearm no less than 10 feet from each other. Nothing else disturbed in the slightest beside rendering first aid where necessary. But so far in my experience i thankfully haven't had to deal with injuries just the clean up. And because of that ive never taken a ride when i used my gun in self defense. I've had to go down to the station and formally submit a statement and i did have an officer tell me what i did was a damn sight better than what they normally show up to a frantic guy waving a shotgun around saying i shot him. I decided on this method after doing some armed guard courses and getting to be instructed by a few military instructors specifically an mp who told me that something like what i do is what they use as minimum safe distances when having a suspect set down a weapon.

I'm an old fart raised on iron sights but.....I just bought a Holosun for my Glock 23 because of how my red dots on my AR'S have made such a difference in consistency and accuracy. It will be a very repetitive journey I'm embarking on but as always you will have helped my journey into this unknown with confidence. Thanks for the insight and tips !

Use your other hand to lower the hammer with fingers in the way. If the gun has a half cock position thats the easiest way to get there but even if you have to go to full decock, safer with 2 hands.

Good advice. It is better to have a high capacity magazine than to stop and reload while the bad guy(s) are still firing. What do you say about an ankle carry back up pistol ?

If I lived in such a dangerous place that split seconds meant life and death, I would add body armor to my EDC.

Yeah, I'll keep carrying without a chambered round. I've seen way too many experienced, well trained gun owners accidentally fire a ND. Accidents happen. So I'm good.

I have fitted 2 triggers to 1911s(my own). The first one took 8 hrs(not bragging), because I took my sweet time. Neither were drop ins(obviously), the second one took 4 hours (slightly more experience), and I learned why good gunsmiths charge so much. It was definitely an experiment in patience.

This is great advice. We had a 3am knock on the door a few months ago, and sure enough it was local police on patrol. He notified us that our garage door was open. Turned out my roommate left it open early evening and forgot about it. The officer asked if we wanted him to “clear it” just in case and we said yes. Not only a tragedy avoided but also nice to know our local PD is looking out for us.

I would’ve chosen a civilian AR-15 variant over the m4a1 I was issued. The only time I ever used full auto was to fuck around. Civilian ARs are better in pretty much every single way.

In the army we carried with a empty chamber, unlike us leo we lacked impunity, but I found that racking the slide on a 45 will elicit cooperation in most cases 😂, I still miss my favorite the M3, that’s a fun weapon
