Music is considered intellectual property. In the U.S., music is divided into 2 separate copyrights. (Composition and Master Recording) The Composition is the song itself (Think: lyrics and sheet music). The Master Recording is the physical recording of the song (the audible song). In America, you have copyright as soon as you bring the idea from your mind into the world via tangible means. Composition: - Songtrust is a publishing administrator. 'Songtrust' collects Mechanical Royalties from the MLC, the HFA (The Harry Fox Agency), and Music Reports. They collect what a publisher would collect if you had a publishing deal. It's important to know about all three, because some companies report to one or the other. Ex.: TikTok reports to Music Reports, but not the HFA (the Harry Fox Agency). *You might as well create a business (Record Label/Publishing Company) and collect all these yourself. - PROs collect Performance Royalties. (BMI, ASCAP, SESAC) Master Recording: - Distributors distribute music, whether digital or physical medias. They pay out Recording Royalties to whoever registers the song. It's their responsibility to register all collaborators of the song. If signed to a record label, they usually handle this. - SoundExchange collects Digital Performance Royalties, which are non-interactive streams. These are streams that the listener has no control over. They don't choose the song, like with satellite radio and Pandora. (These are only on the Master Recording side of the copyright) *Everything mentioned above only applies to the U.S., as far as I know. If you live in another country, you'll have to do your own research for your country.

See this I understand but the issue is the U.S. only part. If only streamed well in the US I wouldnt worry and I'd just do it myself but alot of my music is streaming well globally. Thats where I see something like songtrust come into play

@@ldre_tv I understand. From my understanding you can collect internationally yourself as well. There's a YT channel that teaches how to do this. I'll dm you his channel name.

Last summer I took a few hours and finally registered my beats to BMI. The first check was like $150. Definitely register your music!

Are lofi labels collect those royalties for the artist? Or how's that work? I have released with a bunch of lofi labels, and I have no idea about this topic lmao
@BedroomLofiMusic8 ай бұрын
@@marcellbognar8344I have only registered my independent releases where I own 100% of the master, writer and publishing shares. You’ll have to talk to each individual label if they allow you to register their tracks to your PRO.

Dang. I’ve had 3 viral songs that have been out since 2019-2020 and I think they only go back to up to 3 years. It’s kinda sickening knowing your money can just disappear if you don’t claim it in time. 😩

Truly sickening

This is huge. Especially the fact we only have 2 years to claim AND it takes songtrust almost a year to set up?!? Big thanks for the info.

What if I don't know the Publisher for the Producer I purchased the beat from? Our lease specifies that the Producer owns 50% publisher share but I don't know if they even use BMI/ASCAP, nor are they responsive. Can I use the following breakdown in BMI? Breakdown #1 (Ideal, if I knew the Publisher) 50% Publisher share, Producer 50% Publisher share, Me 50% Writer share, Producer (Composer) 50% Writer share, Me (Author) Breakdown #2 (if I don't know the Producer's Publisher and the fact that I don't have a Publisher) 100% Writer share, Producer (Composer) 100% Writer share, Me (Author)

What about songs that I released with labels? For example Songtrust knows about the royalty splits between artist and label, and collect those royalties for you?
@ldre_tv8 ай бұрын
Technically it would be the labels job to register them

Wait so should I sign up with just song trust? And ignore the MLC? Or am I trippin? Because if song trust will also do the US as well as world wide isn’t there no point in double dipping???

Yeah you dont need MLC if you do songtrust

Another you tuber (Daniel from channel " Stock music licensing") just fairly recently, signed up with Identifyy, as he had heard about it, but ignored it until recently, and they found money and the places, using his music in videos, in China ECT. And to me it wasn't chump change. He just put that video out in the past several days you should check it out he's based in Greece.
