When I studied photojournalism at uni, the thing most people found hardest to grasp was that you're not really going to invent a new style of photography so you have to find someone who's style you like and copy it. You have to pour hours into figuring out what exactly it is you love about their work and how you can apply it in each scenario you want to emulate it. You have to spend hours attemping, reflecting on your failures and trying again. Eventually you reach a point where you kind of nail it over and over again to the extent that you get bored of being able to copy your inspiration and start to expierment with your own twist on their style to alievate your boredom. That's when you hit your stride as a creative and discover your own artistic voice. I then heard poet John Cooper-Clarke say basically the same thing about poetry. I now take that as being true of all journies in any creative pursuit.

Wow thanks for the enlightenment I never thought of it this way but when you put it like this and I think about it, it all makes sense. You know for fashion and whatnot it’s the same scenario. Like I’ve implemented a lot of different styles into my wardrobe and mixed some together (ones that work) and that’s what makes it my own style I guess. Hard agree. Architecture student here. Another tip I might add to your point: copy, but from sources outside your field of study. For example, as an architect, get inspired/copy from anything other than architecture. This way, you're more likely to create something new, rather than repeating the tropes of an artist before you. Same with fashion, if you wanna truly do something new with fashion, get inspired by anything other than fashion. It's ok to say you wanna dress Yohji, but add something instead of copy pasting hard formats.

@@ryne1625 Yaaaassss!!! Get inspired outside of your field! I used to photograph a lot of performance events like circus acts, hoops, dancers, stage shows, comedy gigs, slam poetry, musical shows of all genres - why? They all used lighting in creative and inventive ways. Photography literally translates to "written in light". When I got to do a portrait of one of our most famous living poets (Ironically it was John Cooper-Clarke!), I lit it like it was coloured stage lighting in cyan and magenta with colour gels on the strobes and it came out so good the uni printed it in A1 and it's still displayed right outside the photography professors office years later. Sure, I could've lit it straight with white light... but he has a hundered portraits shot like that already. I wanted to put him "on the stage" which is what he's famous for even though we were in the green room with no other inspiring background or props. I had to do something different, take him out of that small white box of a room and cast him in a way that spoke to his art... which I had the confidence to do because I'd been to 100 stage events prior and knew what could work. IT was also kind of risk since I had to set it all up, grab a support act for some test shots and I got literally 5 minutes with the dude. Enough time to take literally about 6 photographs. If I'd screwed it up, it would've been a disaster. My one shot to capture someone relatively famous and I rolled the dice to try something left of field... and I'm so glad I did. Get inspired outside of your art and take risks. Sure, you'll take some L's along the way, but honestly you're probably the only person who remembers those. What you'll be remembered for is the risks that paid off. But if you never take them, you're only guaranteed to be forgettable.

I want to get more into fashion but the more fashion content I consume the more I realize that it all seem to be a hassle (like if you go the fast fashion trend route). My 2024 goal will be to build a wardrobe of quality clothes that are all thrifted or bought used online because I can’t be bothered spending a lot and getting that deep into fashion. Trust me, watch less of this stuff (I'm not talking about this channel, I mean in general) and the world of fashion will just open up for you. Fashion is supposed to be limitless, artistic and deeply personal, but the online world of fashion is very narrow minded and full of needless labels. You'll never fall into any of those labels if you ignore online trends/influencers and just buy whatever fits your personal tastes, there's no chance you'll accidently end up being a hypebeast or some gorpcore freak or Rick Owens stan or whatever if you don't consume the sort of online content that is actively trying to convert people into a particular style or trend. Log off, go outside a lot, go to affordable places, buy what you like and what you need, ignore the internet, and with time your wardrobe will naturally turn into something you're proud of, and distinct to your personal style. It's really simple to avoid being an "NPC": copy people, not trends. And I mean real people, those you see on the streets of Soho or Tokyo or Harlem or wherever, not influencers that don't actually wear the stuff they show on camera. Heck, you can even take inspiration from anime, games, movies, historical photos, anything that isn't actively trying to influence your fashion choices financially.

I used to buy sht clothes at fast fashion brands (and spend sht ton on tailoring them) but is now happy with those I thrifted. I find that a lot of vintage dead old people's clothes are made of nice materials. My favorite are those from Japanese brands that are military inspired.

@surveyor1515 shoutout to u for being a pioneer, if ppl were down to experiment society would be a lot more interesting. the goal isnt to be fashionable, its to be stylish. fashion is directly related to trends, n its all about either being on trend or ahead of the trend. forces are acc old now but they're still in trend bc they're popular, thats why ppl call them fashionable. trendy doesnt mean popular tho, it takes time to get popular; trendy just describes the rise of an item to popularity. i found looking at definitions of trend cycles and the innovation adoption cycle helped me understand what trends were. they don't need to be new or popular yet, it just needs to be on its way to popularity, n thats what sambas r doing now.

Don't know if this will help you but this is my how I find my style. Currently I like the whole Yohji all black look, and I've curated a closet that's getting closer to looking like some of the photos Fashion Elitist used in this video but with a mix of workwear and utility included due to my current job and lifestyle. Finding your style is something that is slow and changes and is influenced by what you see, the media you consume, your own personal philosophy on life, what your day to day and lifestyle is like. All these things influence your style that seems pretty simple, right? The good part is that you're already building all these things in your day to day without even realizing it. The dilemma of finding your "style" begins when you become aware and conscious of fashion. This shit takes time. Like, seriously. You have to be proactive about finding inspiration whether that be having a pinterest moodboard account, building up a grailed wishlist, having a instagram account solely curating fashion, you have to avoid the people telling you what to wear, and avoid trend videos. I can confidently buy and wear a lot of Yohji's more extravagant and flashy pieces without worry or any doubt (aside from cost lol) I only discovered this style of dressing a year ago and I've only just now started hard committing to it . That's not the important part though, the part to pay attention to is how I got to this point. Fashion Elitist was my first introduction to this style, and I'll say he is a huge inspiration of why I dress the way I do now, but he's only a small part of why I'm comfortable wearing clothing like this, there's a much larger picture for me to decide to dress in that black crow Yohji style. So I used to be super into the streetwear stuff I didn't like formal stuff or looking "fancy" I thought it was corny and only for "old" people, so I've been fashion conscious for years now. But when I played the Yakuza series for the first time, I loved the suits that all the characters wore and that's how I found out I was into suits and I no longer thought they were corny, they were actually cool. But just because I discovered that I liked the suits didn't mean I just went balls deep into buying a shit ton of suits that look the ones the characters in those games wore it just sat in the back of my mind. Then I got into seinen manga's a year or 2 later after finishing the Yakuza games, stuff like Vagabond and Berserk. But out of those 2 Vagabond appealed more to me due to its themes and art and the way characters moved and the way their clothing moved, and the sense of airiness and flow everything had to it with a sharp contrast of violence and the such. After reading it I wanted to start wearing noragis and kimonos and that type of clothing due to the looseness and flow that Vagabond had demonstrated with these clothes. But even I thought it would be way too much to start wearing kimono jackets and noragi's, trying to look Miyamoto Musashi lmao, so I kinda just put that stuff on the back burner. immediately I was drawn to his content and style and I told myself, yea I wanna dress like this guy, and that was my first introduction to the Yohji style with the all black draped stuff. And I didn't hard commit to it at first but I did start downsizing my wardrobe to just essentials and then buying those essentials with different cuts and fits while still curating a wishlist and moodboard of those "grails" I actually wanted. And after curating that list for so long and now that I have money to afford some of these pieces and understanding why I like these pieces and style of dressing so much I can confidently buy crazy looking stuff without any worry and I don't even have to look that deep because I already have a huge list to pick and choose from. The point of me writing this long ass essay on my style journey is because I think it demonstrates how much time and thought has to go into curating a personal style, and how even things from years back can influence what you like today, hell I don't even care if you or anyone else reads it. I just want to demonstrate how slow this process is and everything I've written is over the span of 5 years with so much detail left out because ain't no way anyone reading allat. Copy others, Find out why you like such and such, you have money? Great! I love and hate your videos. Most of the time i feel a little like crap after watching, but I also realised it's because of the wording you use. You already say they copying is how we aquire "our" own style, but what we produce is just a mix of things we copied made into someting new. But it's not really new, it's just miexed in a new way. I feel like you say it like it's a bad thing, but it's how it's supposed to be. So we shouldn't feel bad if we feel if our style isn't truly original, because noone's is.
