Joe, I'm new to the skywatch game. Your videos have been super helpful. This one in particular blows the doors off any other video touching upon finder scopes and the like. Wish the KZbin search algorithm would have sent me here first. Regardless, your video helped me make the final decision, which is: Rigel Quickfinder, then low-power wide angle eyepiece; bypassing the need for a traditional finder scope.

I have a bad back and therefore use a Astromania 9x50 Angled Finder Scope. I never extend the pod legs and can do all my viewing while sitting in a chair. Really nice.

Ok great if that works best for you I once heard from somebody, watch my video and told me that he’s never heard or seen anybody standing But almost everybody here that I know stands I wonder if it’s just a different country thing Anyway, whatever position we do as long as we’re enjoying our hobby

I took apart a cheap 6x30. It had an internal baffle stopping it down to 24mm. Removing the baffle produced an incredible amount of chromatic aberration. It went in the trash.

Yeah, they do that with cheaper finders scopes even the 5 x 24 as well if they don’t stop it as you saw the quality is much worse Thank you for watching the video and your comment

Thank you, Joe, very good and informative. The 5x24 finders I had, one from a Tasco Galaxsee and another one from a Celestron Powerseeker 80EQ1, were truly bad.They have plastic lenses that are barely adequate for the moon and Jupiter, if that. I have another small finder from a 1980s Japanese-Italian Konus refractor which is almost good, made of glass, through which pinpoint stars can be seen. My Sky-Watcher Evostar 90EQ2 came with a surprisingly good 6x30 finder, through which I'm able to see a number of DSOs,including globulars and open clusters.You can actually see nebulosity on M42 from a rural sky, with it. I have a Telrad and an 8x50 finder on an 8" Dobsonian, both great finders. While the Telrad is good, I end up using the 8x50 a lot more because I need to "see more" than what I see with the naked eye, especially because most of my observing is done from a suburban, Bortle 6/7, area. I agree and you’re right when looking for the dim objects a lot of people will use the rigel for the telrad in combination with an 8 x 54 9 x 50 finder The reflex finder get you 95% there then you can look in your main finderscope and see where the little fuzzy patches and then look in your ep I just become so good with my reflex finder and a low 56 mm eyepiece that this is like my finderscope and I usually find it within a couple seconds anyway cheers

I now have a right angle correct image Celestron for only $75 with illuminated reticle. I put my Rigel on my Maksutov. I love my raci 9x50mm Joe, it gives a great view by itself and I put a white filter on it for solar.

The 5x24's are usually stopped down as the lens is a single element. The 6x30's are achromatic and not stopped down. Combine a 6x30 with a red dot for a low-cost solution. Red dots are ok but sometimes an optical scope is needed. Having both works.

I hear you I guess everybody has their own personal preference, and there’s many ways to achieve having a good finder Scope For me I just either use the rigel for the telrad and then a 56 mm 2inch eyepiece and normally I find stuff that way Some people like the right angle, finders others not Thanks for your comment

You'd think someone would make a Telrad type device that fit in a normal finder scope dovetail base.

Humm ok i see what your saying. I thought you were going to say a telrad but half the length. I seen a knock off of that several years ago (well maybe 20) of a telrad but half the length but it either never caught on or the telrad company sued them and they got rid rid of that idea. But I guess yours is just the telrad or rigel that has a custom base there it fits the dovetail bracket. You know what that kind of ok i think, i just wonder if there will be enough sales to make then into making it tho. But really its just a base they can sell as a add on charge same price as the telrad base. I think you should work on it and ill help fund your idea LOL partners

I always remove the stop from the 5x24 (Which are actually 5x16 because of the stop). You might get a bit more chromatic abberation but who cares in a finder? All red dots are rubbish. I would rather have any optical finder than a red dot! I'm very disappointed in manufacturers that supply red dot finders. They were designed to locate bright stars for setting up GoTos. Now, they expect beginners to use them to find everything! Neptune? Naked eye... No. Give me a light collecting magnifying crosshair finder any day!

Some people may disagree with you on all dot are rubbish The metal one i show is an $80 model, i rather have that then 5x 24 finder or 6 x30 However I also just use the rigel or telrad 100% of the time but there are lots new people that cant afford $90 for a telrad so i give other options For the brighter stars if you live in cities i rather have the dot finder as i just need a guild to the star the rest is done from a low power ep.

My problem with the telrad or rigel is that they dont magnify so you are limited to naked eye objects. They are overpriced for what they offer. In reality they are not much better than a cheap $8 red dot finder on Amazon. They do exactly the same thing with the same exact limitation: they dont magnify. On go to scopes, a cheap red dot is all you need since you will only use it to align the scope at the start of your viewing session. But for non go to scopes you need traditional optical finders. That's my opinion but it makes sense. Those 5x24s aren't that terrible lol. Again, you are just finding objects at low power to center them on your main FOV in the actual scope. So what if they are cheap and plasticky? You're not observing through them. You are just pointing your scope!

I think they are better than the cheap red Dot finders because of the bull’s-eye. You can judge how far away is something else I think I have a video that kind of explains it even though it doesn’t magnify if you see two bright stars, you can kinda really guess very close to where you should be As an example, let’s say something is 16° away from a bright star. The Telrad is 4° circle so if you kind of measure for Telrad’s circle, then you should be at the object there. I hope that makes sense once you get used to star hopping like that it is much better than a red dots In fact, a lot of times with no finderscope and just with the Telrad I can points to about a degree away from something and then I just use my eyepiece to scan and normally 98% of the time I find it, so just takes a little used to using it Let me see if I can pull the link of the video where I kind a show why it’s better and I’ll send it to you take a look and see if it changes your mind a little bit. But until you really use it and try it a dozen times to get used to it even watching a video may or may not show you how good it is

You can also use a very large fov eyepiece (long eyepiece focal) if your scope isn't too long.

Yes true me personally, a lot of times when star hopping I don’t even use the finderscope just with my telrad or rigel and with a 56 mm to inch IPS I normally get to my object easier Although I wanted to just show the general public the different models. Thanks for you comment

Every company makes a red Dodge finder scope and they’re also about a dozen no-name brand red dog finders so when purchasing one just type in red dot find a scopes and I’ll come up If however you mean the bull’s-eye one that I say are the best they are called a Teluride or a rigel Did you watch this vide? kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4nWn3WwqN6Xmq8
