In John 9 we meet a man who was born blind. The disciples assume that this evil exists because of either his sin or his parents. Jesus, however, explains that everything (including this painful evidence of the Fall) is under the Sovereign hand of God. He goes on to say that this man was born blind (on purpose) so that the mighty works of God might be shown to all at that very moment. The problem of pain and/or evil is not a problem when you are given eyes of faith to believe that God is at work. We are all at one point or another like the man born blind, unable to see. We are like the disciples, confused about what we see. And we are also like the Pharisees, hard-hearted and unwilling to see. It is only through God’s gracious and efficacious pursuit of us that our eyes are opened from blindness into faith and our dead and rotten hearts are given new life in Christ “who came to make all things new.”
