@@Romans--bo7br you have that one right. The other issue where would they find a 5 to 1 marine gear to fit the VW? That Jimmy likely has 3 to 1 Twin-disk gear on it. That's oil in the bilge. You can't go dumping it on the ground and so close to the water too. You want it a keep it a good clean habitat for plants animals and people too. A place where our children can one day take their own. And it is a gorgeous spot. I can tell the energy there is a good vibe You'd remediate that pumping into a tank or drum and dispose of properly. There's plenty of environmental services to take that off your hands. Just ask the guys at the logging camp what they do with their old oil It's prbly no more than 100 gals 375 litres. 2 drums should do it. It's not a big deal. Just a small step in a very big project. Axully I'd say that is the very first phase. The next step is thereal question is - transporting That's a long long way to drive a crane and trailer. But I'm not from there so I could be wrong She's close enough to the water to build a slipway and slide her in... we know she doesn't leak. Lol. Then tow her back to civilization. That would save a ton of bucks in fuel costs
@timmorris30564 жыл бұрын
@@tommypetraglia4688 We Never said to drain it onto the ground, typically if you don't have the pumps, then drill a hole in the hull, container below with funnel or a hose in the hole to a container. Takes five minutes to weld the hole shut. It takes longer to read your suggestion than to load the damn thing on a self loading slideback towtruck and out of there. This time you assume that a crane is needed. We've handled this type of recovery several times a year, this one would be simple. Kudos to you for your armchair warrior input though.... I remember seeing one of these little tugs pushing logs around in the river here in Fort Frances, ON for Boise Cascade Canada back in the late 70s or very early 80s. I think they called it the Jitterbug or something like that. The little tug would bob and weave through the logs moving them from the wood yard about a mile downstream to the log deck at the mill. Later, the little tug joined the larger Hallet (another Russel tug) and another tug I don't remember in their winter storage lot where they waited for a number of years to be sold off. The Hallet eventually was given to the Town as a museum attraction and they have it set up on the waterfront and usually have it open in the summer for tours. I do not know whatever became of the pond boat. I believe the third tug has recently returned to the Town and is undergoing a cleanup and will join the Hallet on the waterfront as an attraction. Russel Brothers has a significant history with Fort Frances. The company was started here and moved to Owen Sound about 1935 in an attempt to expand the business beyond the local logging tug market. I recall reading an old news article about them testing some sort of speed boat design in the river shortly before they moved south. It is interesting to see these pieces of history still kicking around.
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
The 3rd tug that you mention is the Owandem, being restored for displaying near the Hallet. You might have also seen the OM 238 and OM 340 around that area also. Thanks for the story Doug, pretty cool!
@DougsMessyGarage4 жыл бұрын
@@OutdoorRob Right you are Rob, the Owandem is the name of the tug being restored for display by the Hallet. I was trying to think of it before I had my morning coffee and couldn't quite come up with the name. There is another logging tug on the shore at Hoffman's Harbour (just east of Fort Frances), I will have to look at it sometime and see if it is maybe OM 238 or OM 340. Also I think I recall seeing a similar style tug in the back 40 at the George Armstrong Ltd property to the west of Fort Frances so it may also be one of the tugs you mention. It's interesting to see your efforts to track down these old Russel boats. Keep up the great work.
@OutdoorRob4 жыл бұрын
Armstrong got rid of their old small gators, I bought one from them years ago and then sold it to a friend of mine. OM 340 went to Kingston, ON and I last saw OM 238 at a business in the area. I remember they had a bunch of old barges and boats in a bay before the causeway but that was cleaned up. If you do come across a tug, please feel free to message me a photo on Facebook, would be nice to see, even if it's not a Russel. Thanks and take care!

You stick one end into the bilge,the other is below the hull level on the ground, you set a siphon running and let her drain out by herself. Lake Superior Ontario Canada...

That is a tough little boat from a company with a proud history and a town that once was the "Liverpool of Canada" but now is dilapidated & full of empty factories. It deserves a better fate.

I agree! Wish I had the money to rescue her, would be a cool little project!

When I was a young diesel apprentice I served my time at Cummins Ontario, in Etobicoke ( Toronto Canada ) the franchise formally was Cummins Eastern. They where originally Russell Brothers in Owen Sound Ontario. They where famous for building “ Ville “ tugs, about 30 ft long, their names all ended in Ville. Hodgeville comes to mind. They also built “ Glen “ tugs which where build for the Canadian Navy. They where about 80 feet long. Rolled like a pig. I sailed on the Jarrett McKiel, I believe it was the former Atomic. Anyway, Cummins Engine Company as a condition of the franchise made Russell Bro’s move shop from Owen Sound to the Toronto area to service the automotive segment, as they where no longer building tugs. A lot of the men who taught me had homes up around Grey County, would work through the week down in Toronto and go home to their farms on the weekend. I am surprised to see that 4-71 in there, I suspect she may have started life with a small bore NH 4 Cylinder Cummins. Most of those old engines the blocks where cast in Japan for use in Kamatsu construction equipment, or from the Cummins facility in Shotts Scotland. I may have seen this boat sitting at a logging outfit at the junction of Hwy 71 ( just south of Sault. Lookout, and the road that leads to Hudson, back in the 80’s when I used to unload cars at the trading post, as the rail underpass bypass wasn’t built yet, and I was too high to fit under the bridge. Shout out to Ray at Matson Motors ( GM) RIP by now ? As a former tugboat owner, I hope all of you who mentioned draining the slop out of the bilge wouldn’t just drain that mess onto the ground ?. The wheel on that boat was most likely cast at Kennedy Brothers who had a founders in Owen Sound next door to Russell Bro’s. I remember Fred Russell too. That 4-71 might be a “ Grey Marine “ marinized version. In that case it might have a Capitol Marine Gear. Thanks for your time. .

Pump the oily bilge into a tank and take that to a used oil place. That's a long long way to drive a crane and trailer. But I'm not from there so I could be wrong She's close enough to the water to build a slipway and slide her in... we know she doesn't leak. Lol. Then tow her back to civilization. That would save a ton of bucks in fuel costs

This would be great to buy and restore! Good project for someone that appreciates unusual vehicles and it shouldn't take too much time, money or space to work on and park once restored. It'd be a shame if it just sat there degraging, abused and unloved.
