In 2004 I was made redundant by Royal Mail and lost my job as a postman. I urgently needed another job and applied for dozens. My first interview was at a call centre ( I had no idea what the job involved) At the interview, the young girl in HR who conducted the interview sat before me in a micro mini skirt, and was very flirtatious. I was suckered in and was offered a job. Training lasted for two weeks, I was in a group of young people having a good time. It looked too good to be true. It was. On the actual call centre was nearly 200 people in cubicles and a massive hubbub of noise. Once on the phones it was angry customers shouting abuse at you all day, a constant whin of complaint. Nobody was around to help on calls and I began to lie to customers to get rid of them. I lasted nearly two years before I got another job at a different call centre which was better paid. I still can feel the pain of this job.

I worked in a brutal call center a few years ago and can confirm all the rumours etc. I gained useful office admin customer service telephony experience and also a nice private pension (some of the few benefits from working there). I now work with a better employer with great benefits which offers work life balance, government pension, training courses etc, I was also able to transfer old pension from call center into my current government pension, so I should have a nice nest egg gathered by the time I retire (30+ years time). Hold on to good thoughts, prepare well for your interview (endless resources online to help you with application and interview), and good luck.

I just resigned from my Call Center job a week ago. Here in the Philippines, we are required to render 30 days instead of just 2 weeks when resigning. I've never felt so free after those 30 days. The job started out good as it is work from home but after almost 3 years the non-stop calls, the micromanagement, the nagging of the QAs and the live monitoring camera and software attached to our PCs which basically gives the workforce Eye of Sauron capabilities to monitor us and make sure we are productive and attentive during the shift was just too much

Well done Pete, raw honest information that's highly valuable for anyone considering this as a career choice. After 30 years of call centre work I can vouch for the negative long lasting effects this job has had on me. It has soured me towards society in general. I lost a lot of respect for the public after I learned that majority are rude buttholes. Definately permanent personality and trust trauma from bosses exploitation. It's all a bag of horror. I Implore anyone to think twice before entering this game of death 🔫⚰

You should do a video on Quality Assurance meetings where your supervisor pulls you aside to go through your calls with you and provide feedback. I had my own weird experiences with my former workplace including when the supervisor really tried to push for you to identify where you went wrong with calls. Even if you exhausted the reasons that you can identify, they still pushed hard for the answer they wanted. I would rather have had them tell me.

I was an out of work graduate and I was pressured by my benefits office to apply for this. The person specification and job description looked so glam. I was told at the interview I was amazing lol and they accepted answers that weren't connected to the post. I got a job offer shortly after the interview. I thought I finally made it, I didn't realize I was joining a call center until my first day and nonstop misery for the next while. Luckily this is behind me and hopefully never again. These are useful jobs if you are really struggling and desperate for money etc and can be useful ways to gain office admin customer service experience as well as workplace politics and culture. I also experienced working under pressure constantly and can confirm all of the rumours about working in such a place. I enjoy a better quality of life now and feel like I got to stick it to my former employer (which felt extra good lol). Have a good day reader.

@@gerardsloan1593 It’s interesting with call center work that you can have 10 plus experience on the phones and each new company or department within the same company, you will be treated like a brand new employee. If you have 10 years experience as a plumber or electrician that means something. I understand why, but it’s interesting.

I've begun working as a consumer engagement specialist (aka call center in disguise) for a fortune 500 company. Had no idea this is what the job was, I'm 6 months in and as soon as i make another 6 months I'm out of here. The amount of abuse and absolute garbage human beings I have to listen to on the phone is enough to make me go insane. I will say this company is a little nicer as we can hang up if they start getting aggressive but still it is NOT WORTH my sanity to stay.

I feel for the call center reps and I did work what was basically a CC job for a few months at one point. As a customer of many services I will say though that most people probably wouldn’t be so pissed off when calling in if these companies policies weren’t so blatantly predatory. I’ve had to call Spectrum at least 5 times over the past year and b*tch about random rate hikes when I was locked into a 2 year deal. I was less than pleasant a couple times with the reps because quite frankly it’s a huge waste of my time and to me the company is filled with dirtbags. I get that it’s not the call center employees fault and I know that a good deal of the people out there are absolute morons but at some point my patience is gone. I know people have to work but for Pete’s sake, find another place other than these abominable multi billion dollar companies. There’s jobs everywhere nowadays because no one wants to work.

I worked in an Orwellian call center a few years ago. Although customers can be bad I found colleagues were equally as bad. Harassment, bullying, backstabbing, smiling assassin's, used/abuse/manipulate discard you. But it gave me an awareness of how ruthless some people can be especially in the workplace, the kind of experience you could never learn at school home university etc. However it was eye opening and toughened me up and it taught me that workplace politics and culture are part of the game you need to play if you are looking to advance in your career. I compare the culture and politics in a call center like swimming with sharks (and piranhas lol). Personally, I have a conscience and believe in working to a high standard, healthy relationships at work (work colleagues are not your friends trust me), some luck and timing will get me where I need to go. I don't believe in backstabbing or stepping on toes etc. Luckily I now work with a better employer with great benefits (besides money). I used a bad experience to get something better. Have a good day reader.

You make a great point about Spectrum. Companies need to take a hard look at why customers are calling, chatting, or emailing to begin with. If Spectrum locked in your rate that’s what it should have been for 2 years. To blame the reps and have an obsession with average handle time is not the way to go.
