I talk about a super important topic for student researchers in college and grad school: your advisor. I explain four things to look for and ask yourself when taking on a new advisor so you can make an informed decision. Take your time with this; some people would even say choosing your advisor is more important than the research topic itself!

@@nantes9807 Close! If you're referring to Prof Razavi, the circuits guy, I think he is at UCLA . I've had friends who took classes from him. He writes a bunch of textbooks that are commonly used.

I am considering to take a CS PhD program in Texas State University in this Fall 2022. However, I am just wondering whether the ranking of University will impact what job opportunities in the future. Could you please give me a piece of advice on that?

I think when it comes to PhD programs, I would say the Professor you work for and what you accomplish there in your research matters more than the ranking of the school. I suppose it can be harder to get noticed for a job interview when coming from an school that is not as well known (which is not the case here). But once you get that interview, it's all about how competent you are. I've met really smart people that were hired that came from a wide variety of schools and backgrounds, so ultimately its not something I would focus too much on.

My daughter is going to Stanford Mechanical Engineering master program this Fall. Your video is very helpful. Is it easy to get RA or TA position? Did you goto PhD right after your undergraduate or after the master program? How hard is it to get in the PhD program from the master program? Thanks in advance!

Congrats to your daughter and I'm glad this was useful! Regarding RAship or TAship, in my experience, it's not too hard for PhD students since the dept tries hard to fund them. I can imagine it being tougher for Masters students, though I did have friends who were able to land positions. I went into PhD straight from college. Coming from Masters program vs college, I don't think it should be any harder or easier to get into the PhD program in most cases, but can vary depending on the school and dept. Hope this helps!

Are you expected to write primers explaining to professor some things he or she might not know a lot about? Is that common?
