This comment might seem crude and blunt so my apologies beforehand, but I just wanna say that it is so incredibly refreshing to have someone who can eloquently talk about Animism and Nordic symbols who Isn't an esoteric fascist or uses these topics as an excuse to promote their own hateful views. This kind of resource is actually really hard to find, so I just wanted to let you know that your work is much appreciated 🙏

I have played around with the idea of creating a "guild". Not a craft-guild (or gamers guild) as we so often associate the term with today but a friendship guild. Theseare lesser known but were very common in early medival europe and were used in all sorts of ways in all sorts of contexts - often for mutal protection and other benefits (for specific time and/or purpose; or indefinently). The common thing though were that they officially bound unrealated people together in a kinship-like manner (with kinship-like obligations) in sort of a chosen kinship/clanship; not bound by linage but bound by oaths and common intrest. Just thought it fitted the conversation in the video. A Guild (or "gille" in "Scandinavian") might not sound as "primal" as "clan" or "tribe" but it is probably closer in historical function to what is discussed in the video.

i have dissociation and identity issues, feeling alien and disconnected are some of the worst feelings i deal with. being able to connect with, or at least be aware of, other fellow travelers, are some of the best.

On your to-do list is "Learn Finnish and be cool like the Finns". While I doubt I'll ever be as cool as they are, learning Finnish has been a lot of fun for me and not as difficult as its made out to be!

If someone want to look up the old norse word for "tribe" it is "tjod", or rather "þiuþ", which is where the English name for Sweden originates from (swe+tribe). Which is not the same as the Swedish name for Sweden, Sverige (swe+realm). The þiuþ and the riki were two very distinctly different political and social entities. A very simplified expmaination is the following: A "þiuþ" were a tribe based on lineage - today. One could call it a "extended kinship" or a "clans of the same origin". It was not a geographical nor a political unit - and it certainly was not politically united. Members of the same þiuþ could serve different kings, just as people from the same clan could. However a "riki" (realm) on the other hand could include several "þiuþ" but all members of it pledged fealthy to the one and the same king. It was not a unit based on linage but a political (and somewhat geographical) base. As such they were two very different things, even though they to a big extent overlapped, creating a multilayered society. A third relevant term, that extended further, were the "válði" wich were the peoples and regions that the king of a riki (realm) demanded tribute from under the direct or indirect threat of violence (aka "taxation by fire"). These were called "tribute-lands" or "taxation-lands". Several kings/realms could demand tributes from the same "tribute-lands". However many tribute-lands then sought protection from one or the other (or sometimes both) and many wars were fought for the right to be the only one to be payed tribute. This then often pushed the tribute-land into the riki (realm) of the king who protected them. Today we would probably call this an "empire". So you have one track that is based on linage and which would normally not change: family, ætt (clan/kinship), þiuþ (tribe). The other track were political and based on oaths, geographical common interest and violent projection of power; hundred/herad/godeord, land, riki, válði. There are several other entities in this category as well, or one could split it up further between purely oath-based entities and more geographic-based entities. The ones that were based on oaths were ofc much more prone to change as power and aleagencies shifted over time. It was a complex society and many traces of these structures still lives on today all over Scandinavia. As such what term one chooses to use matters quite a lot as they actually mean very different things.

I have a little story I made that kinda uses this symbolism to represent my personal path. In it I start in a tribe of sheep, and I join the tribe of cattle. In a way Christians could be considered a tribe of sheep considering Jesus is often called Good Shepherd.

This idea seems to have a fair bit of similarity with the youth subcultures in industrialised nations in the late 20th century. As someone who used to be “goth” I know well that there is shared enjoyment of particular styles of entertainment and self presentation as well as labelling of slight differences of temperament across the subculture as it is found in different locations. The community is never without conflict but that is the case in all communities no matter what the basis of that community is.

Great video with a fresh perspective. I had the idea of a tribe was the perfect way to live, but I think my ideas became very much statelike which was the opposite of what I wanted. xD Your perspective took the narrative into the direction ive sought for, and it is really interesting how a word can bring illusions into minds.

I like the idea. Using keystone speicies makes sense, especially when you look at the history of our paleolithic past which would be hunter gatherer, and the main thing you want to be really good at is hunting and gathering and because people believed that spirits were equal and that we are part of nature it would of made sense to associate yourself with a particular apex predator because you would want to be a good hunter like them. It would be a good step towards reconnecting with nature and addressing humanity's superioety complex. But while you have addressed it, I would assume Americans, Australians, New Zealanders would have an issue because those people colonised those places but then again it would be good to connect with those indgenous groups. But in my opinion while its important to address what has happened to these communities, I also dont think animism, humanity original belief system should be gatekept and I hold that to my heart because I developed animism beliefs from a very young age independently. In my field of environmental science, theres a lot of scientists in my field who are indigenous are wanting people to reconnect with nature, to see the world how they see it, and implement their land management tactics to deal with the environmental degradation. Theres even a framework for secular people in this field but I cant remember what its called.

A rare sane viewpoint. Discovering your totemic "clan" is a far cry from the New Agey "find your spirit animal" type of naïve rubbish. IMO you'll encounter 'the one' in your dreams (probably already have from early childhood onwards - try to remember), if not in waking forced rituals performed indoors. Initially you'll likely detest the animal (which is symbolic of its more metaphysical 'primeval holder' to literally translate the Finnish concepts "emuu" or "kantahaltija" into English); it's a highly personal test of your character. At first this etiological animal probably feels "not very cool" i.e. it won't be a wolf, raven, bear or even elk - although it could be, who knows but you? It could be a more humble beast; yet each have their wisdom and healthy meaningful powers. Get over it, see the beauty and simply have an open mind/Self. Also research your ancestry as much as possible. Depending on where you're from geographically/ethnically, you could find hints ranging from total zero to lots of info. Sorry to blabber so, but the strongest key in this matter as in many others seems to be your Self. Find a way to connect and relate with your innermost mights; thereby shall you also tally your outer friends as numerous. 🍄

Nah. I live in Oklahoma where many indigenous people very much relate to their totem clan in contemporary ways, and it would be extremely culturally appropriating of me and white people to just invite ourselves into a totem and clan, even if it's for an animal not already "taken". Nope! But I do have an idea: the books Wings of Fire are wonderfully complex children's books that deals with issues of tribalism and allow easy communication with kids about topics like genocide, structural racism, entitlement, privilege, oppression, lateral violence, solidarity etc. (I highly recommend!) In some of the books they do an experiment at a lets-say university setting of creating "winglets" that are groups of dragons with common goals. To play with contemporary pop culture instead of glom onto already existing totem worldview (that in my context should be the protected domain of indigenous peoples), something like winglet instead...

@@NordicAnimism quite right! I refreshed a couple times this morning and didn't see my comment, so now I'll just know there's some kind of glitch. I've watched those other videos ofyours and didn't have the same alarm bells with them as I did here. I totally like the idea of cross-cultural species enthusisasm, I just think the phrase "totem clan" would be inappropriate (since I know of the process my indigenous friend's kids go through when being welcomed into their clan, or even white people can be invited or adopted in, but not a white person self-declaring, no way). Affinity groups, winglets, some other word. You went through the condomble initiation, so picture a white person not doing that but self-declaring their initiation (!) without the deep process it actually is

@@keldaoen Thanks for this! - My generalized response to the use of the word "totem" is there in the cultural appropriation video. The word English loan word from Anishinaabeg is used today globally also by Africans, Indigenous Australians and others. "Clan" is mainly a european term originally referencing Scottish or Celtic kinship groups (Gaelic "clann"), but from there the word (like "totem") has entered scholarship lingo. A couple of weeks ago I picked up a hicker. It was a young Norwegian and as we chitchatted in the car he mentioned that he was from a noble family literally named "Raven" who had a raven in their crest. Now you can kinda choose to NOT want to name that a totem clan, but the thing is that this is pretty much what it is. The coinage totem clan (Anishabeg/Gaelic) is a generalised common way of naming that in English. Like..... We could consider finding another term if someone somewhere has decided that now this word belongs so unilaterally to them that the rest of us should figure out something else... but really!? - like... really!? So indigenous people in Oklahoma can use this common coinage in normal globalized English, but Ugandans Europeans, and indigneous australians cannot ? - is that really what we are supposed to navigate after? Anyway most of my argument on the word "totem" (and words in general) is in the Appropriation video
