Tying a few threads together.. Maria Kvilhaug translates the name of Ymir as "sound," and the cutting of him into pieces to create the world is akin to taking a primeval sound and using it to create an orchestra of countless tunes. So that sound waves/ vibrations are the foundations of reality. Secondly, I studied Ninjutsu for a brief time, and the various levels of learning were based on elements - earth, air, wind, water and void. Each level/ element corresponded to a sound which was supposed to have a physiological effect on the body. All the commands I learned as a yellow belt had an o sound like "stop." Other levels had other vowel sounds and it was related to Hindu Mantras. “Mantras are not small things. Mantras have power. They are the mind vibration in relationship to the creation. The Science of Mantra is based on the knowledge that sound is a form of energy having power, structure, and a definite, predictable effect on the chakras and the human psyche.” - Yogi Bhajan (from an article about Mantras, not connected to Ninjutsu.) Anyway, this all seems to tie together in your discussion of runes as both sounds and elements of creation. This is also a big endorsement of the Animacy of Runes course as I'm really having quite a bit of mind blowing realizations going through it! 💜

Indigenous has many definitions… one aspect is an indigenous lifestyle- one that lives as one with nature, animistic and encourages all kinds of life to thrive - is the birthright of all humans. Another aspect is the political label of indigenous. No it should not be used by settlers or colonizers to refer to themselves… Having said that… It’s important to allow for cultures to share without one bullying or stealing… or segregating and isolating everyone from one another. There was an interview with you on a podcast that was very impactful for me… how you interpret ragnarök as a tale of what happens when interconnectedness is lost… seems like this can even be down to the family level, or within an individual.. not just a society wide sickness

When I took one of those tests, I confirmed that I'm mostly Northern European, but found out that my racist, Mexican-hating Spanish grandmother was actually self-hating and more indigenous American than Spanish. I think knowing your biological ancestry is a good thing, but misusing that to make yourself feel better than others is ignorant and egotistical. People are too disconnected from their ancestors nowadays.

A rare sane viewpoint. Discovering your totemic "clan" is a far cry from the New Agey "find your spirit animal" type of naïve rubbish. IMO you'll encounter 'the one' in your dreams (probably already have from early childhood onwards - try to remember), if not in waking forced rituals performed indoors. Initially you'll likely detest the animal (which is symbolic of its more metaphysical 'primeval holder' to literally translate the Finnish concepts "emuu" or "kantahaltija" into English); it's a highly personal test of your character. At first this etiological animal probably feels "not very cool" i.e. it won't be a wolf, raven, bear or even elk - although it could be, who knows but you? It could be a more humble beast; yet each have their wisdom and healthy meaningful powers. Get over it, see the beauty and simply have an open mind/Self. Also research your ancestry as much as possible. Depending on where you're from geographically/ethnically, you could find hints ranging from total zero to lots of info. Sorry to blabber so, but the strongest key in this matter as in many others seems to be your Self. Find a way to connect and relate with your innermost mights; thereby shall you also tally your outer friends as numerous. 🍄

Thank you for the excellent video! BTW I can vouch that currently the habitat of various stork species extends at least as far North as Northern Savonia in Finland and Uppland in Sweden, so Denmark surely isn't the 'Ultima Thule' of these birds 😉 I presume that in my native Finland there are ca. 3000 nesting pairs of various stork species, so a somewhat "rara avis" (no pun intended) although not listed as endangered at present. We have a LOT of wetlands here. In Finnic myths/folk tradition, storks belong to the general idea/grouping of 'sacred water fowl' and are thus linked to creation myths (of e.g. the Diver which picks up mud from the bottom of the primeval sea and so dry land gets its origin) and by extension are seen as embodiments/epiphanies of the Creatrix Goddess often called by such monikers as 'Golden Maid', 'Sky Lady' etc.

We need more movements like this in North America! It’s like every time I learn a new piece of the Nordic story and animism it becomes more of a ”we need this as a world wide community!” People are waking up and I think the tools are all there to help the world. Seriously though, the world is just dark and sad without animism. The world is alive and full of beautiful other than human spirits!

Thank you for this Rune! So important to bring attention to ways thr Indigenous call is expressing itself in dominant culture and the potential pitfals of perpetuating a colonial agenda (unconcsciously or not) by usurping and making something our own that is not. I wonder, as a Danish born national, when heeding the Indigenous call through your own Nordic roots and animisn, does that then become a process of re-indigenizing yourself to land you belong to, being Denmark? At one point is a person of any western majority group indigenous to their own country/land?

Speaking about trees, have you considered about making videos about the native trees and plants of Scandinavia from a Nordic Animist perspective? There seems to be a wealth of recent videos about ecological restoration projects in northern Europe from KZbin channels such as Leave Curious and Mossy Earth. It would be cool to learn about the ethnobotany about the Scots pine, birch, rowan, oak, Norway spruce and beech from a Nordic animist perspective. Been thinking a lot about how European tourists come here to Aotearoa New Zealand and marvel at what remnants we have of our Gondwananan rainforests and wondering whether that inspires them to have a closer sense of land connected-ness with their homelands via eco restoration projects and reviving + synthesizing animist knowledges. I do remember Machan Magan mentioning in your yarn with him about sacred oak groves in Ireland, which is awesome!

Somewhat semi-related, but you might be interested in Farya Faraji's relatiely recent video on Viking music. It deals with the broader theme that you have been discussing on your channel about the invention and mythologization of Viking-ness and Euro pagan-ness/heathenry by modernity. The point he makes about paganism and Christianity being innately syncretic mirrors Grundwig's philosophy. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWLLgWeejrx4r7M

The mark of the beast The Bible says that people receive “the mark of the wild beast” because they follow it “with admiration,” to the point of worshipping it. (Revelation 13:3, 4; 16:2) They do this by giving worshipful honor to their country, its symbols, or its military might. As The Encyclopedia of Religion states: “Nationalism has become a dominant form of religion in the modern world.” * According to the last book in the Bible, 666 is the number, or name, of the wild beast with seven heads and ten horns that comes out of the sea. (Revelation 13:1, 17, 18) This beast is a symbol of the worldwide political system, which rules over “every tribe and people and tongue and nation.” (Revelation 13:7) The name 666 identifies the political system as a gross failure in God’s sight. How? *

Perhaps I shoul pay more heed to that - thought I don't think that neither Grundtvig nor Kold would classify as controversial. Part of the problem is that I often read material in Danish, or other Scandinavian language so .. how relevant are the references really for many anglophones. Anyway. Here are a couple of references on books I have read on Grundtvig and the folk school movement Ebbe Kløvedal Reich, 2019. Solskin og lyn: Grundtvig og hans sang til livet Ove Korsgaard, 2018. Grundtvig rundt : En guide Ove Korsgaard, 2023. Højskoler for folket Ove Korsgaard however, seems to have some good looking anglophone publications

Thanks for this video. Of course, the seasons also were very important for our ancestors. The Sun and its conventional mytheme of "being dragged over the sky by animals or transported in a ship", is not natural or logical. There is NO WAY anybody can observe such a scenario and make such a mytheme. A wheel is a symbol of a "rotation around its center" and the ONLY possibility of observing this scenario in nature, is to study the Earth´s celestial axis an its motions. And THEN we get the natural explanation, namely the celestial center around which stars. star constellations, and the contours of the Milky Way are revolving. Then the natural mytheme is: A POLAR WHEEL seemingly pulled around by star constellations of Ursa Minor or Ursa Major. If speaking of a "ship", the crescent vaulting Milky Way figure very easily can be stylized and depicted as a ship "sailing" around this celestial Wheel. More illustrations here, search "native-science (dot) net/mythical.ship" Best Wishes

one thing, about the norse myths (and also the hellenistic and more) is that they are not meant to be taken literally, but are artistic... well poems or prose of the gods, they're meant to celebrate the gods through story telling, which then makes it more flavorful. and it was written down by christians 200 years after the last polytheist in scandinavia and iceland stopped worshipping the gods and nature. Which also might've played a role in why they seem weaker than the greek gods, and are sometimes humanized, as the monks ofc ccouldn't go against gOd

@NordicAnimism 18 күн бұрын
Well... I kinda disagree with both the things you say there. I do think that gods are literal subjective agents. WE TODAY just tend to have trouble understanding that (for longwinded reasons). And the sources were not written down 200 years after the last polytheist in Scandinavia. The process of christianization is quite a bit more complex than that.
