Finding Agates and Petrified Wood near Cisco and Yellow Cat!

We used to rockhound here all the time. Bring a Geiger counter. You will be shocked how hot most of these agates, wood and bone are. Especially the black pieces. One piece I found had Carnotite on it that was 10,000x the background radiation… Uranium stains all of these rocks in the Morrison Formation. I’m a former Arches NP Park Ranger. Just be careful due to the Uranium and Vanadium that literally cooks the entire Yellow Cat area. Also if you go further south you can find petrified logs. If you see any yellow stained rocks/wood/bone, it’s Carnotite (a uranium based mineral).

I have been careful looking for yellow stains when it comes to petrified wood, but wasn't familiar about carnotite up in the barite area. Thanks for the info! I will definitely be a little more cautious now.

@@theruggedrockhoundalso that “killer wood” can be found in gigantic pieces on the hillside above where you are hunting. My wife and I pulled down giant pieces off that hill. Pure white and agatized wood.

That is really cool! I do go to some other places where we found some larger pieces of wood up the hill, and they were also mostly white.@@RangerMcFriendly

Wow that find at 4:58 is amazing! We can't wait to be able to go to locatons like this to be able to find different minerals like agatized barite and petrified wood! One day soon. The agatized barite was awesome! The red agates are amazing. I have lots of petrified wood around here but don't think it's agatized. The Yellowstone river is full of it. Very nice ones. We have a petrified wood Forrest here right side of Buffalo Wyoming. Definitely worth seeing. There's a big tree standing right out of the ground.

I wonder how the barite was dissolved away 🤔 weird. I though I had found something like that but I’ve decided they’re stylolite geodes

the whole rock is agatized, but I will try to clean out the rock between the terminations. If I manage to succeed, I will make sure to upload a video or photo of it. Thanks for the input!

Dude you need to claim a spot! I think it would make a great video. The whole process is a mystery to me. I don’t think there’s anything in Missouri that you can claim 🤷🏻‍♂️
