Congrats on finding a place! That sounds very very hard. We had a similar experience moving to Auckland and trying to find a rental in February this year after the floods and cyclone Gabrielle- the rental market here is always nuts but then we were also competing with people who had lost their homes, which was awful. We have a dog which made our search more difficult, and were also going to showings with 50-80 groups of people and competing with hundreds of applications. When you said it became like a full time job i had a shudder of understanding! In the end, we got a place that is soooo perfect for us and it sounds like you did too. So look forward to all the content you create there ❤

Good grief! I had no idea about rentals in Paris. I have lived in rentals most of my adult life and across four different countries, and all had good and bad experiences. So glad though you have a place and look forward to a tour soon!

My husband and I own a flat in Paris and unfortunatly french law makes it almost impossible to get people out, we had one girl who got addicted to heroin and didnt pay her rent for a year and we still couldnt get her out of our home :( im all for tennant rights but france is rather extreme, it just makes the rental market segregated even more

Most apartments under the eaves in Paris are former "chambres de bonnes" i.e. maids’ rooms designed to accommodate just a bed and a wash basin, so the conversions to apartments are very crude and unrealistically small. The term even has its own Wikipedia page. Like many big cities, Paris has started clamping down on Airbnb rentals. While more profitable for owners, they wreck the social fabric, as the people who work all the low- and medium-paying jobs needed to sustain an expensive city can’t find or afford a place to live. Hopefully the pursuit of this kind of legislation will make more units available to actual inhabitants. Glad you were able to find a long-term rental as you pursue your Parisian-life dream.

well I'm only sleeping in my own bed right now and no sightings so far! I haven't heard of any cases with friends either but the fear of them is very real

Well done - it sounds like an awful ordeal! The bad news is, it’s like that in the UK now - 50 people applied for our cottage, and the only reason it wasn’t more is because it’s too remote for many people. Before that it was a case of constantly checking rightmove, endless unreturned phone calls, and fruitless applications. It’s even worse in London.

@@JessicaRoseWilliams I think ( I’m 57 - I’ve been renting a long time 😁) being a tenant is definitely worsening - when I think back to the 90s it was way easier, not to mention significantly less of your overall income and I was completely happy with renting. But over the last five or so years rents have risen so much and it seems that no one really recognises that it’s your home. You struck really lucky in the U.K. with your landlords, and the cottage we have now is good - it’s on a large country estate, so very beautiful, quiet and surrounded by trees and I do love it here. But we have inspections where total strangers come into our home and take photos, even in the bedrooms, so we are regularly reminded that we may live here, but it’s not really our home. And that’s increasingly the norm. It does make me want to buy somewhere, but we simply cannot afford it where my husbands job is, so 🤷‍♀️ on a more positive note though, it’s secure and they do take care of the property. And at least we, and you, have homes! It’s horrible looking for somewhere in such a tough location, but you did it, and it sounds like it’s pretty secure, too, so I hope you are taking the opportunity to congratulate yourself on believing in what you wanted enough to make it happen.

Congratulations Jess, it looks pretty! As a landlord in Ontario Canada, I can tell you it’s the same here and again, it’s because landlords pretty much have zero rights here. It can take two years to get bad or non-paying tenants out. Looking forward to the tour!
