Happy Mother’s Day, you two! Enjoyed today’s chapter. The landscape out west is so different! Stark, but still interesting. You normally think of cactus as an “out west thing”, but someone who lives a block or two from us must have tossed out a cactus several years ago. Right on the edge of the property, next to the street. That plant survived (on benign neglect) and puts on pretty yellow flowers every year and then fruit. I’ve never tried to eat any of it, although it is clearly on the county right of way and was definitely tossed out. I keep saying I’m going to break off a leaf (or whatever you call it!) and see if it’ll grow in my yard. That one has grown so much that someone has actually pruned it back or stolen (borrowed?) a few branches. On the subject of hot dogs, we came across something called a Japadog in Vancouver, BC in 2011. It was a little pricey for a hotdog, but has turned out to be a happy memory from the trip. My husband enjoyed it so much, he made sure to get another one just before we headed for the airport to go home. One hot dog he had was made with edamame embedded in the dog - delish. 😋 Y’all have a great week and enjoy being back in your nest until you hit the road again! Bye bye from NW Florida

Every once in awhile, we would find a small Prickly Pear cactus growing in wild areas in southern Illinois. I also had a friend in south Texas who planted a tiny California Redwood seedling that had been a table favor at a conference. Back in the 80's it was 20 feet tall in her yard but I visited recently and it was gone, possibly from a hurricane. It is interesting to find plants and birds out of their range, like the Steller's Sea Eagle from Siberia that went through Texas the was up near Maine all winter. I remember when a lonesome moose was known to be roaming in Iowa!

I think I would have to borrow a leaf from that cactus, it sounds beautiful and hardy. If we ever go to Vancouver will have to check out their hotdogs. We are enjoyed being back in our little next. Thanks for sharing your comment.

Wonderful! We’ve stayed in Tuscon twice, last October and January. We have family there. We fell in love with the area, stayed at Gilbert Ray in Oct, but it was full in January- now I know the trick to getting a spot!😉 we stayed at that same BLM area. The first time we were delayed by traffic on The highway and it was dark when we got there. Spooky, but the next morning it turned out to be okay. There were a lot of people there in January! We ended up staying near the family and their church parking lot, so didn’t stay at BLM but it’s nice knowing it is there if needed. I want to try one of those hot dogs! We are so enjoying your trip.

The BLM is a great backup. We really did enjoy our stay at Gilbert Ray, it was nice to have all the electricity we needed. We loved the area so many things to do…

I am glad you dropped in live. I was concerned that you were trying to camp in Tucson or the Phoenix area in this hot weather! It's "potholder weather" right now where I live near the Superstition Mountains. I carry three potholders in the car; two for my hands on the steering wheel and one for the place the seat belt buckle burns my thigh. Happy Mother's Day!

Owin we have taken your suggestion and bought a Clam screen tent and it came in yesterday. WOW is that easy it will be a niece addition for us. Our time in Florida was just fantastic. Question? In that boondocking spot, being you got a Revel and 4wd would it have been possible to go further out and maybe use the 4wd just to get up some hills to get away from the crowds? I noticed you were close to the paved road it seemed. No way most of those rigs i saw would make it even up a 20 degree rocky road. Just wondering. 👍🏼

Yes. Kind of. It got really tricky in a hurry the further we went. Since we wanted a quick exit in the morning to grab a spot at Gilbert Ray we just found a little spot that was relatively isolated.
