Hi guys. Loved this video. Im a retired, solo, slow traveler who's been on the road for 7 months now and i can totally relate to this topic. I constantly explain to people that I'm not a tourist, I'm a traveler. I dont visit a place for a month, i live in a place for a month. This morning, like every morning, i got up and looked out the window and said to myself, "Wow, I'm in Turkey. How crazy is that!" Next month it'll be the same only in Greece. Slow traveling is the greatest!
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Yes, it's hard for those not traveling full-time to relate to. I totally get it, when I would plan a vacation somewhere, it was packed with all the sites and very little downtime. Just not a realistic way to live when you are on the road full-time, and so much is lost in that process. Sounds like we are on similar paths - Safe Travels!

I absolutely loved this video. Over the past couple of years, I’ve embraced slow travel and I’m having the time of my life. I really love “living” in one place for a while, getting to know the neighborhoods, explore the non-touristy areas, and take time to see how people actually live in that country, region, or town. And if I only explore 3 or 4 countries in a year, that’s fine by me. It’s not about checking a million things off a list. It’s about enjoying life and appreciating all the little things. Fast travel is not sustainable, but as a digital nomad, slow travel is perfect. I like what you said, Carrie - enjoying living there, not just visiting. It’s been fun watching both of you evolve along this journey. There’s something intangibly different about you both since you started this adventure, and I mean that in the very best way.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much ♥. We feel so blessed to be doing what we do and appreciate every second. It is a continued learning process that is for sure and a balance of knowing what each of us needs to check our boxes - so plenty of compromise. We appreciate you following along on the journey ☺
@AM-qu5qv9 ай бұрын
Because we didn't want to, I love it! Not a full time traveler but this is how we vacation. Being packed in shoulder to shoulder with a ton of other tourists at some "must do location", waiting in long lines, or sitting in traffic all day isn't enjoyable for us. We can do that a home, no thanks. Rushing around every second and checking off items from someone else's list just isn't for me. Do we always have to explain why we skipped this or that? Sure do and I give the same answer, we didn't want to. Do I regret any of it? Nope not a bit.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
It's so funny how everyone else can have your must do itinerary lined up in their head. Then think it's weird when you didn't check it all off the list 😊. Slow, take it all in, see a few sights.. That's our style and we are happy with it. Cheers!!

We faced travel burn out our first year, too. Now, we have a "Home Base" in the area we want to explore and take advantage of the discount airfares from there. For example, this year, we based out of Da Nang, Vietnam for 6 mo and from there went to the surrounding areas. Next, we're going to Albania so we can see Europe. It's helped a lot to know that after a week or 2, we get to go "home".
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
That is such a great way to do it as well! That feeling of going "home" is so nice. Settling quickly back into a routine does a lot. Safe travels!

Another excellent video!! Very insightful! Our few stops made us realize that spending time in a city/country is more beneficial than popping in for a day or so, or even a week. Cindy and I prefer to stay for a month or more. Our next trip will be Spain, France, Italy, Albania/Montenegro, and then back through Spain, before heading back to PDX. We hope to receive the good news about Biden 2024 while we are in France!! Thanks again!

I'm slowly warming him up to this idea of early retirement and slow travel to that time & beyond. This video might be my favorite yet! You're speaking to my soul & heart here. I long for this sort of experience. I have no interest in fast travel at our age. (We're the same age range as you two - I am soon to be 53 in October & my husband just turned 55 in May) Staying longer times in each location and ingraining ourselves into the local area sounds absolutely perfect! I also especially love your thoughts on giving back in some way to the communities in which you are visiting. Thank you for taking the time and energy to put these well thought out and informative videos out for all of us dreaming to live the life you are living! Bravo to you both!! Cheers!

Finding purpose by volunteering to help animals (22:10) really resonated with us. We've tried to connect with dog rescues with mixed results. In Spain, it's been hard due to the rescue locations far outside of town (requiring a car) and/or long training & time commitments. In Mexico it was easier. We are not looking to join a volunteer travel program, we just want to help-out while we travel. Very interesting topic there. Thanks!

This is very good. I have been travelling for many years. When I was working I would hop on a plane and go somewhere even for a week if I had vacation time. I actually spent that week travelling slow. I went by myself, so I did whatever I wanted. Once I went to Jordan for a week, and spent one whole day in my room reading a book because I wanted to. I had the best time there, doing it at my own pace. For me, it’s the only way. ❤

Everything you've said resonates as what I've experienced. I'm like Carrie in that I'm an introvert & need a mental break & downtime. But, I'm also like Brian in that my entire life/career has been go-go-go. I've learned over the last couple years to finally enjoy the moment, wherever I am. I've not perfected it, but I now realize it when I feel the need to DO something. And, finally I agree, I just don't have the energy I did when I was younger & that forces me to slow down!

When I was looking at retiring overseas, I spent a month in each country. I thought a month would be long enough to really feel like living there vs. being a tourist. While I enjoyed each place, the grind of settling in and then getting ready to move on every few weeks got old. Now that I've been to 40 countries, I've decided to just keep my apartment in the US and travel a few times a year, spending up to 2 months abroad. Weird thing is, I can't think of anywhere I really want to go anymore.

If you want to do something, or feel compelled to get out there, go sit at a cafe and people watch. A sailing buddy taught me once when we were in port. You're not doing the tourist thing, but if you're paying attention, you're learning about the place. Are people walking alone or together? Together with whom, family, friends? Or are they hanging out greeting all their friends who go by? Walking with purpose or ambling? What are they carrying? Are they on their phones? How many are dressed for work, or casually? Are the answers different for young our old? Men or women?

Great video! You hit the nail on the head. Totally can relate. It's difficult to explain to people that your life is not a constant vacation. You're living in a place, not vacationing in it. And I don't feel bad at all about those days when I don't do anything or when I choose to relax instead of going to do more sightseeing. It's about finding the right balance that works for you...just like anyone would do in their life no matter where they are. Keep this style of videos coming! Cheers!

Great video! My husband and I slip into the scene wherever we are, with no compulsion to run around doing tourist things. We loved Croatia, but in 3.5 weeks in various cities there, the only tourist thing we did was go to Plitvice, and that was stellar! We spend gobs of time walking around looking at architecture and nature and practicing a few words of the language of all the countries we visit. We do visit museums, etc. but we travel for months at a time, not weeks with a checklist.

Great video! We aren't full time world travelling nomads, but that said, since retirement a few years back we do move around quite a bit (winters in Mexico, spring/fall at our home in Vancouver BC, summers at a recreational property in Washington state, intermittent trips for a few weeks to places like Europe). Everyone is different but we quickly learned that moving around too frequently is time-consuming and stressful for us. Even the process of managing food supplies so we don't waste too much as we move along can be a chore! We prefer having a base for at least several weeks. We have our two senior dogs with us most of the time and that helps guide our decisions at present.

Hi Brian and Carrie! We appreciate your channel and your content. We did immigrate to Lisbon, Portugal in 2021. Lisbon has been a wonderful base for us and as you stated we have seen so many things in this area that sometimes when we travel in Europe it doesn’t seem any different than our experience here. Your experiences help us evaluate what we have been doing and other options we should investigate. I have been the fast traveler for our entire relationship and Shannon just indulges me. We did our US family trip last October covering Dublin, San Francisco, Seattle, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, and Lake Havasu in just 25 days and it was seriously taxing. Hi guys. Years ago I traveled through Europe, Ireland & UK by car. I soon got bored with seeing cities, obviously they’re different in some ways, but the same too. I ended up bypassing most cities and larger towns. Travelling to smaller places and through the countryside you also get to see interesting things. And the best thing is that you are more likely to meet the locals and really get to know and appreciate their culture. Have you ever considered occasionally hiring a car in the more quieter areas? Have you considered staying in one country for at least 3 months and no more than two locations (eg: north & south and coast & inland)? That way you really get to know & see a country as a whole package. Great video, it provokes thought and encourages conversations. ❤Zeljka

They're like, what? I'd say we live here for three months. We'll see what we see and won't what we don't. We often find we remember the little unusual non touristy things that we happen upon more so than the touristy things we make an effort to go see.

We will be retiring next year and planning on taking our first “slow vacation.” Planning on spending time in Da Nang, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Siem Reap and Koh Samui. We plan on spending a month at each location. Doing some day trips from these areas also. We are really looking forward to spending time in a place without it being so schedule driven. Interesting to hear your experiences and perspectives on slow travel. Would be interested to hear any tips on maintaining habits or routine while travelling. I think you have touched on this before…but i would love more thoughts on this. Has it changed the type of Airbnb you choose. (Do they ever have a comfortable chair to work from??) I would also be fascinated to hear how long youtube and the podcast and other social media takes. I am kind of curious to hear about it, is it worth it? Does it detract from your travel experience? Thanks really loving your material…❤

Hi, Rebecca! Our preferences for Airbnb accommodations have evolved over time. We've come to realize the importance of having both a dedicated workspace and an outdoor area. While we do devote a significant amount of time to managing our KZbin channel and podcast, our workload doesn't follow the typical 40-hour work week for each of us. It's been a learning process to figure out the best way to film videos without compromising our personal travel experiences. It's taken some trial and error, but we feel like we've struck a good balance now. After two years, we're starting to see value in our efforts on KZbin.

Very interesting series of videos, thank you 😊 missing your sightseeing videos though. Will you be doing more in the future?

Yes, we have been home visiting friends and family. We are back on the road now. We did release our Ireland video a couple of weeks ago and will have our Fethiye, Turkey video out next week with Greece to follow! ❤

First night here in KL..... After Bali... Going to watch your KL videos again. Besides the stairs/cave, towers, night market...china town(1000meters) away, any other must do , restaurants or pubs? Safe travels Larry and Minnie
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Not really, those were the main key points. We had some of the best Chinese food we've ever had at the well known street market ☺. Enjoy and safe travels.

I’m been following you for a while and I was wondering how you were going to keep up that daily tourist energy. For my wife and I, your slower pace now seems infinitely more our style. The only thing I would personally like to add is to connect with the locals on some level somehow. It may mean a 6 week or even two month stay. I think it could be meaningful. But I have no idea. It could be wishful inexperienced thinking. I applaud your videos and look forward to them as you explore and expand your travel experiences. It will be interesting to see what your views are in another year or two assuming you continue. We have friends that were going to live in Portugal for 2 years. They will be leaving after 3 months. The weather in Lisbon was not what they expected.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Thank you, Patrick, for the kind words! Yes, connecting with locals can be difficult. Getting to know the waiter or a neighbor is possible, but they're unavailable or unwilling to be on camera. We have been traveling for almost 3 years and have big plans for the future so not stopping anytime soon!! 😀 Cheers!! 🍻

Agree with this 100%. Now in my 50s I’m not at all interested in touring 10 countries in 30 days. Immersion travel, as I call it, is the way. Get to know neighbourhoods & just hangout. Playing tourist is exhausting much of the time. But I still have people assume I must be on hop on hop off tours 24/7 😅
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Love that term - immersion travel 😊. Yes, totally exhausting and not the experience we are looking for at all. Cheers!!

My big question regarding where to live and HOW to live is, "When you 'live' somewhere, what does it mean to 'live?'"
@BrianandCarrie7 ай бұрын
Hi, George we did a video a few months ago where we describe what our daily lives look like from the time we wake up until we settle in for the evening. You may find it interesting.

Hi guys: what do you do when you budget research is incorrect and your short to cover last few days? Do you move on to next trip or are you bound by your budget?
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
We can always cut back the following month. Our budget will balance out over time and have never been so far over budget that it has been a problem. One way to get back on track is to go to SE Asia for a few months! 😀

Does the fact that more countries have joined the Schengen area mean that you’ve had to alter any of your travel plans?
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
It hasn't affected us yet, but it could make things difficult in the future.
@robertmcfarlane41519 ай бұрын
You have said more than once that this isn't a prolonged vacation, it is living somewhere else. You aren't a tourist. You don't need to cover multiple tourist sites each day. Having just returned from a 3-day tourist trip to see cherry blossoms in Washington DC, it can be exhausting. Racing around for Instagram pics, isn't the purpose for doing the full time travel. It is to see and experience the world, live the life in that place (however slow or fast that may be). It is walks, going grocery shopping, going to the beach, cooking a meal together and hanging out on the balcony watching the world go by.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
So very true 😊. We are happy we've found the balance we have now... It took a bit of time and is still a work in progress.

It feels like you’re apologizing for slow travel, which you really don’t need to do. I recall being in Mexico, overhearing a woman talk to her family about how every day they were going to do a different excursion and have so much fun. My husband and I looked at each other and rolled our eyes. we had no plans at all other than to walk down the beach a little bit. Slow travel rocks. Stop and smell the flowers people.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Interesting take...We are not apologizing for our slow travel lifestyle. We are absolutely living our dream. 😀 Cheers!!🍻

Wait...What...this isn't a video on how to balance on a One Wheel? 😮😢😊 These videos/ podcasts are great 👍 Thanks as always for sharing your journey. Even though you have that balance/ rhythm with the newness of the country/ city.....Do you find each city can still have it's own "vibe"? That creates excitement to see more or the yeah I'm not feeling this place lets move on.... Like getting past the highway exit strip malls full of canned Franchises to the heart of the place and the people.
@BrianandCarrie9 ай бұрын
Yes, each place does have its own vibe! We are loving Fethiye. Seems to be a younger community, very vibrant! We will miss this place when we leave.
