Another great video! I'm planning on European Dobe again myself. Had a rough night 2 nights ago, was up all night in tears missing my boy Thank goodness my wife is very supportive. Been 5 months now and still have rough days without him. I didn't realize is was as difficult to find a European breeder in the states. I'm buying my next one from the same reputable breeder as my last boy. She breeds both American and European, but mostly European ones. She's one of the Top Confirmation Breeders in Canada. You are very correct about a reputable breeder asking you just as many questions about you. I had 3 contracts i had to sign when I bought my boy, co-ownership, breeding and show contracts. Top breeders are very strict with who they sell their dogs to. They want to protect their bloodlines and health of the breed.

UDC has mostly American Dobies , working lines. AKC has primarily show dogs. 60-70 percent carry the gene for heart disease. Look up research at UC Davis vet school. OFA also has tragic information on DCM in Dobies. Our girl died in April and we’ve been searching since then.

Our European girls grandfather was the European Grand National Champion. She was a beauty and a nice dog. I would still choose my current American over the European for the reason I said below. The breeder is way more important than the type of Doberman.

Katherine Poindexter You can. It is a bit more difficult and way more expensive. If you are looking for a family fun dog the American is just as good. Plus I like the size of the American better. Dobes are very strong dogs and I like the smaller American size better. A bit easier to handle.

If I decide to get one in the future I most likely will turn to the American because they seem less work oriented and the psychological factor of having one will most likely provide enough protection that I would not have to train one to protect me anyway.

Totally agree Suzanne... the breeder makes a bigger difference. I've found it's good to pick their brain a bit and ask in-depth questions about what traits they specifically breed for. You can learn a lot about the temperaments they're breeding for by doing that.

I have some European-strain breedings planned. But I ALWAYS refer to my dogs as Dobermann Pinschers, as MANY European Dobes bred today are far too strayed away from too several old sacred traditional traits that some early strains called Dobermann Pinschers of Europe had. So a Dobe shopper does NOT want to make merely the word "European" the most important thing. I like, for instance, a reasonable degree of Euro modernization in size. But many are ridiculously bulky and lacking in quality form. There can be the challenge of finding product bred to have balanced character traits. For instance: Some are dangerously aggressive. Some will rise from resting EVERY time a fly is heard or a bee just as ready to sting them. Not ALL European programs are great programs.

Thanks for very interesting video. The best way to get a European Doberman is to come in Europe. I think it is better to buy a western European puppy because these puppies stay longer with their mothers. Most of the breeders in Eastern Europe are puppy Mills on the Non EU countries. Unfortunately it is possible to buy a young puppy on the market like some vegetables. My girlfriend bought her dog Rokky in Yerevan and she has a lot of behavior problems with him. Rokky do what he wants to do. She raised dogs for many years but this one is so hard to train. Just be careful from where you get your puppy. Here in western Europe you could find a club specialise for each breed. But there's an other problem the language most of the breeders don't speak English. I will purchase a Doberman puppy for that I will contact the French Doberman club to know the best show line litters.

Just one more tip to identify the right breeder: European dobermanns in that classic side view are customarily photographed with their mouths open, unlike the American doberman pinscher.

Yeah, I feel the exact same as you! I would never feel comfortable basically ordering a dog over the phone or by seeing pictures/videos only and never seeing them or their environment in person. I will be driving to get my next pup for the same reasons you describe. No problem, FB isn't for everyone. It's a good source of knowledge for specific/weird one-off questions where you can ask other owners. But as for breeders, there are a lot of better places to look anyway! My cinnamon Doberman Ruby, her mother was American and her father was European. My girl is 7 months and she's lean and I believe she has more characteristics of an American Doberman. Ruby's father was cinnamon and mother was black in color. Her temperament is amazing. She is kind, funny and incredibly intelligent.

We have a TON of European breeders in the great lakes region. It's hard to find a breeder who doesn't have them. We're getting a little red girl next week who's super laid back. Her daddy is 120 black male imported from Romania and her mother is an 80lb black female born here in the states. We honestly didn't care if we got a European or American, we were just looking for one who came from healthy parents. We noticed a lot of the dogs in this area all came from the same bloodlines, which meant both parents carried recessive health issues, where this one had one parent who was clear and the other who had only 1 recessive, so no chance of our little girl having it.

I strongly suggest "Go to as many Dobermann Pinscher Shows or (trials) as you can. You can actually see the breeder and their dogs in the flesh! Between the time when the dogs are on the floor - you can walk by and see the dog, ask questions 'face to face'. The good thing about these shows is you are going to see best specimens they have. Take your camera with you; be polite. ask if they mind you taking pictures, ask if they have a card (be sure to catalog the ones which impress you so you can speak to them based on your conversation at the particular show or trial.

Ask for pedigree, then learn how to read it. Then go to shows, Trials - Show dogs are generally bred on 'speculation'. European (working lines) are seldom available - on the ground. You need to - generally... they seldom breed, just because. You are correct, serious breeders have homes already have homes, pre-selected for every dog in a litter, before the breeding.

Oddly we had a great European breeder just three miles from our house which is why our first was a European. He went out of business due to family issues. After that we went American. I loved our first girl who was the European but our American boy is the better choice for me. We had a terrific breeder who was super proud of her dogs and very knowledgeable about the breed. I think the breeder is more important that the European vs. American.

I love Dobermans and lost my beloved Pup after nearly 13 years. She was half American and half European. After getting a new European pup from a lying breeder, and one who never let me know a history of aggression that id playing out now. Pup is impossible to train, stubborn, aggressive, bites to draw blood, and flips out crazy. And worse I love her. She had live in 4 weeks of personal training from a well known pro costing mega thousands and nothing works. Safest for me is getting bitten by bugs playing ball with her. And she hates to be alone. But you asked why European... there are many reasons.. and I hate to admit this.. but a big part of it is simply that our last dog was a European and we just fell in love with the Euros over the years. Their look, temperament, everything. I have worked with a lot of Americans and they are great too, in fact my wife was leaning more towards an American this time. But she had fallen in love with the Euro look also due to our last Dobie which tipped her back to my side... Anyway, we'll be looking for a male.

Great thing to do! Just take your time and spend some good time with the dog you're considering before adopting. You never really know what they've been through before they came to you. But it's such a wonderful thing to do for the breed. The only hesitation I have is if you adopt a large powerful dog like a Doberman, don't know it's history, and have young children in the house. I would be cautious there.

Salutations!! Um would it be easier to just fly to Eastern Europe and get the pup from there? I know the puppies themselves are alot cheaper. The problem start when you try getting them to the State's. 😕 I was in Budapest a couple of years ago, and had some contacts, but I ran out of time and numbers got list😨!!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I really think either one could work really well and it's probably more important what the individual breeder is breeding for with temperament. But if I had to choose, I might lean a little more towards an American Doberman (probably a female... although again, either one could certainly work) just because they tend to be a little more "in-tune" with their owners, which I think would be very important for a service dog. And females bond very tightly to one person and love working directly with that person. European Doberman has a big head putting stress on the neck spine had to put him down at just under 9 years old he couldnt lift his head anymore to painful from the disc damages.

Hi, @Burnheart, I have an Aussie girl (she'll be 9 yr next month). Got my doberman boy puppy when Aussie was 1 yr old. She taught him everything and they got along so well from the start. She is like a big sister to him even now, they still play and have this super weird ritual where she would lick his ears and he totally loves it. I added female doberman puppy to the mix when my boy was 4 yr old. They are best buddies and all 3 dogs are just perfect pack.

You all are looking for breeders with European bloodlines but bred right here on American soil. You breeder need to have several imports to pull this off. Which is not hard to find right here in America.

Hi John: being that I have had 5 Doberman plus one now. I would like to know what happened to Cooper. He seemed very young. I have had them die of old age (which I prefer) rather than young with cardio, kidney or some other disease. My oldest Dobie lived to 12. My youngest was 8.

He died of hepatitis of the liver. Specifically copper storage disease. Unfortunately, it was in the cards for him from birth. Yes... way too young. I certainly agree! We're still struggling to deal with the loss at times.

Doberman Planet yes unfortunately now that has been found in our dobes. I love the breeder I have but she probably won't be breeding anymore, love her and love her breeding. I am thinking about getting one this summer my boy will be 7 . I know thru experience to have two. It works out nice for so many reasons. Please let me know what you find. Personally I love all dobes American or Euro.

Americans are great dogs for sure! Focus on picking a puppy with a temperament that matches well with your situation and you'll be super happy I'm sure! I won't say we ruled out American Dobies completely... if we found the perfect breeder or puppies and they were Americans, I think that would be enough to sway us back to the American side.

They are beautiful and fun and smart and alert and protective - but talk too much for my peace of mind and nerves. I'd just have to get over my love for Amstaffs and Cane Corso and tall American Pit Bull Terriers and Boxers - I just seem to love block-headed headed dogs - in the meantime I shall enjoy directing anyone discussing that type of dog to your channel, how about that? PS BTW, have you ever seen the 1972 movie, The Doberman Gang? A super brilliant bank robber and a dog trainer train a gang of Dobermans to rob banks 'because humans make mistakes and other humans do unpredictable things", and made his last bank job go wrong , so he says he needs 'robots, robots are programmed... when they see something that's not in the program, they ignore it they don't foul up by waiting to figure it out, they finish the program". So, when it happens, getting the money back from the dogs tends to be a little bit of a problem. It's a kind of serious movie that has laughable moments but those dogs are serious about protecting what they have been taught to get, and they have been taught that no one should get what they got! Now I'm going to have to hunt it up and watch it, I cannot resist! I saw it on an Air Force Base movie theater when it first came out in 1972 as an impressionable kid. I have loved the idea of a Doberman since. I've watched the movie a couple of times throughout the years. It definitely made an impression on me.
