Choosing a Doberman breeder to work with to find your next family addition can be tough, to say the least. A lot of trust goes into any breeder you choose, but how do you know if they can truly be trusted? In this video, we'll talk about some of the most important questions you should be asking any Doberman breeder you're thinking about working with to help determine if they're a reputable, ethical, and honest breeder. We'll also discuss the health tests that the breeder should be performing on their dogs and some really cool databases you can access online to learn even more about a specific breeder or puppy. This is information I wish I had LONG ago!
Here are links to the two databases I mentioned in the video:
1.Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) Database: www.ofa.org/look-up-a-dog/
2. Dobequest: dobequest.org/
As most Doberman owners know all too well, not every dog product works well for this unique breed. That's why I maintain a list of the best products I've found so far for Dobermans.

Ok, this is the video I've been looking forward to. There is quite literally no amount of money that would equal the value of this information. I believe I'm going to reference this video time and time again until (hopefully) I can commit this to memory. I do intend to reference this video when buying my dobe. "Thank you" really doesn't cover how grateful I am to this particular video. You're awesome and a good ambassador for the breed. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

Our breeder stressed that if, for any reason, that we could not keep the dog she wanted him back!!! I think this attitude is very important. Plus, she is always happy to get pictures and hear how Moses is doing and he is now two years old.

ALSO: Ask to see the parent's AKC registration numbers. IF either parent's number contains the letter "Z" it is known as a "Z factor" Doberman which carries the Albino mutated gene and COULD have increased odds for health problems. If you follow the dog's lineage you WILL run into Albino Dobermans. A great way to tell if the dog is "European" or not too. If it contains a "Z" it is not a "European."

The first breeder I looked at was terrible. Although he just so happen to be down the street, the place was filthy, couldn't answer most of my questions (are they American/European, things about the sire, etc.) & shamed me about wanting cropped ears which I hear every reputable breeder should give you the option and crop before you receive your new puppy. They also mentioned they priced their pups by going online, checking other prices, and making their's the cheapest so that they are easier to sell. One of the most disturbing things they said (which they thought was funny?) was how they found a newborn puppy hours later in the washroom that they must've missed the dam give birth to. How do you not watch your pregnant dog like a hawk at that time? I now check popular selling sites and they always have puppies up for sale every few months. Sad to see them using their Doberman for a cash grab. At the time though I almost made a deal because I was SO excited to finally get a Doberman. I made the smart decision & checked out a reputable breeder although she was a few hours away. She gave me contact info about past buyers, contract, was her pup's second and last litter because she genuinely cared about the dog's safety and comfort, had 2 young children around the puppies, & offered to take my dog back at any point. I still give her updates every few months. Shop around a bit before you choose a breeder! It'll be worth it.
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that IS pretty disturbing. I'm glad you were patient though (and willing to drive a bit) and found one worth working with for what you were looking for. That's so important. So glad you resisted the urge to buy one since you were there and they were available. Hard to do for many people!!!

Waterboarding is more useful than a lie detector test, haha! Luckily, both parents of mine had their ears cropped. I asked him if he could recommend a vet so that I could get that lined up should I buy one of his. He highly recommended his vet. So, before buying my pup, I drove to his vet and asked ALL about the breeder and what kind of care his pups get, tests, everything. No HIPAA for dogs. Ching!
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 4 жыл бұрын
"No HIPAA for dogs." Man... best advice I've had in awhile. I totally didn't think about how there aren't any privacy laws for dogs like there are for humans. Now you have me thinking about other checks I can do on dogs. This is awesome advice. Thank you!
@DobermanPlanet
@DobermanPlanet 4 жыл бұрын
@The Roaring Dragon Ok well it's certainly not HIPPA. I wonder if there are other laws that protect animals then? I could see a civil issue with it for sure...
@theroller5673
@theroller5673 4 жыл бұрын
@The Roaring Dragon I am in the US and it is not illegal to answer questions about the breeder. Privacy laws for animals vary state by state and are not federal laws. But please note, I suggest asking questions about the BREEDER, not for records on specific dogs. For example: does the breeder bring litters in for examinations, what is the temperament of the dogs, what is the breeder like, and on. You can ask if the breeder has the dogs tested, you may not be able to hear the results. Besides, upon bringing up a breeders name, facial expressions given by the vet or their staff may be worth a thousand words.

I would ask about communication while litter is raised via pictures, their knowledge of temperament testing,, and their socialization process and if they begin early training with potty training because you want to establish how much will already be done for you before you get your puppy. The more the breeder does, the less difficult it will be on your end once you get your puppy

Been watching your posts for a while now. Great advice overall. One or two comments tho. Holter monitor testing is a snapshot of that moment in time the dog is hooked on. Genetic testing is a far more reliable predictor. Dogs, just like people can have irregularities in their ecg tests for any number of reasons (fyi I'm a nurse). Also, don't discard a small breeder simply because they do not have a fancy website and advertising program. I bought my gorgeous girl from a small breeder. All necessary health testing, full disclosure, parents on site, 100% verifiable European breeding. Will take any dog back, etc. Thanks again for the devotion to the best breed of dog there is!

i never realized any of this when i got my dobie....we were 4 weeks into getting her ears wrapped (i had already had her house broken, sitting on command, etc...) and when i took her to the breeder for the ear wrap she wanted to "trade me" puppies because she wanted mine for show. There were only 2 black females and the one SHE kept wasn't up to par but mine was. I sharply told her NO...and told her that SHE picked the one she wanted (again...there were only 2) and I didn't sleep on the kitchen floor for 3 weeks potty training MY puppy to hand it back over. I never went back for the last ear wrap and she turned out beautiful!!!

You brought up some things I hadn’t yet considered to ask about so thank you! We are hoping to bring a new Doberman pup into our home within the next year. We’re not rushing things, we want to make sure that we’re ready to take on a new dog (both my husband and I had Dobermans growing up but now it’s our turn to foot the bill 🤑 and make the best choice for our son and the whole family). We want to talk to some breeders, reacquaint ourselves with the breed as we get our son acquainted for the first time, and just make sure that we’re all ready when the time comes to bring her home.

Very good video over all. Happy to see such a thorough, well thought out video. I would just make a couple comments. Not all breeders spend the extra money to have their health tests entered in OFA so be sure and ask the breeder for copies of health results if they aren't listed. Also, Elbow dysplasia is not all that common in Dobermans. The DPCA recommends an eye exam and WAE (Temperament) test in addition to what you have mentioned. I always refer potential puppy buyers to the DPCA website. There is a wealth of information there. Great job!

Thank you so very much for this informative video. We thought we went to a reputable breeder and got our first doberman 9 years ago. Within 5 years she developed bone issues and I contacted the breeder immediately, not to return her as we were in love, but so that he would know of the issue and not breed the parents again or check their DNA. He gave no response. Yesterday, we had to put our best friend down and it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I can't imagine living without a doberman! I am on a mission to be more thorough and you have helped me greatly. I now know so much more! Thank you for all your videos and please continue them!

I got my first Doberman when I was 16 I didn’t know nothing about them, I had no idea they had these health problems , I just knew someone selling puppies, all I had to go on is the mum, she was very stranger aggressive, I chose the cutest puppy and she ended up living to 15 with no health problems at all! yes, you just never know, the best sounding puppy could come down with some disorder that they don't test for, or now they are finding out stuff about epigenes or something like that, where the trait shows up on DNA test (pair of the mutation; should be an "affected" dog showing that trait physically), but the epi gene turned that chromosome off that particular dog. i got a ton of things wrong here, i am sure, since i have no degree in biology or anything, but i saw a show about this on PBS and later one on the Discovery channel, and it explained it a lot better than i am =) but the point of the shows were that we still don't have a guarantee even with DNA and the complete genome of dogs like we thought we did. it made me so a face palm and throw my hands in the air! =) just when we thought we understood it all, nature throws another curve ball at us!

I have watched a lot of Doberman Planet videos which have been excellent and applicable, but this one seems more theoretical than actually practical. Good luck getting all that. be lucky to get half of that in real world. And if there was a breeder came close to checking all those boxes, they would probably have a waiting list a mile long and your chance of getting a puppy from them slim. And remember Dobies are in demand, not like you're going to go to the local shelter and get one like other breeds. So it's unrealistic to think that breeders are going to bend over backward for any one person when they can just move on to the next interested party.

You are exactly correct. Our American Doberman breeder bred her dogs because she loves and adores the breed. She showed hers regularly. Our European breeder from our first dog, in hind sight, was into it more for the $$$. He had impressive lines but he did not spend much time with his dogs. Our current American breeder spent a lot of time with her dogs and I have to say... our boy from her is such a sweet dog. She called him her “honey lamb”. Couldn’t be happier with him. ALL the boxes you suggested to check are accurate.

It's funny because sometimes when you think back and say "I shouldn't have gone to that breeder" you immediately think "well I wouldn't have my dog then so I guess it's good." I was same as you, Cooper was from a questionable breeder but in the end if I didn't go there I wouldn't have had the best dog I've ever had. Anyway, thanks so much for your input!!!

Good video but I would like to add a correction if that’s ok. VWD carrier does not mean that dog is at risk like a dcm carrier does. VWD carrier only means they carry 1 part of the Gene. They need both parts to be affected now if your dog is a carrier and you breed to a carrier then your pups could be affected carrier or clear. Now if you breed carrier to clear there is chances of clear pups and chances or carrier but never affected. And clear to clear is clear only. Also I like when buyers ask about other titles other than conformation CH. because there is much more that can be done with a well rounded well bred Doberman. Also larger kennels can have more than 1 litter a year and still be a great kennel there is a lot of people that co-own with other breeders. And most great breeders I know crop the litter before they leave for their new home and offer crop support until posting is done as well as lifetime Breeder support :) great info here keep it up!

I think it's easier to fix a used car than a Doberman with genetic issue and the cost is about the same if not more :( I had an adopted Dobbie and she had many health issues - food allergies, mange, incontinence, not to mention behavioral issues, and she died from cancer at young age. That dog cost me thousands in three years that I had her in training and vet bills, and a lot of hart break. I still cry when I think of her. My best dog ever. Just wish she was alive and healthy. Next time I'll either try to get a healthier puppy or adopt another unfortunate, screwed up by humans Doberman.

Doberman Planet hi John, after 100’s of hours of searching for a breeder my euro pup arrives on Feb 6. Small breeder. All medical testing is on website, Fam lineages, Holter testing every 6 months, Enrolled in DOB. Diversity Project. (The whole 9 yards) talked to her many times. She’s a nice knowledge gal currently enrolled in The U.S. Armed Forces. She has another litter due around May. If interested I’ll give you her f.book /web.

There are very few breeders in North America of good ethics who will let a dog go uncropped, although there are a couple they don't breed often. One thing to consider is when something is awry in a cropped ear, it's seen much earlier than in a flopped ear. This is a serious issue in such a stoic breed. The bottom line in the United States is the best breeders who health test, show, and mind type/temperament have their puppies cropped between 7-9 weeks of age. A really good breeder doesn't let their puppies go home before the ears are healed and ready for posting.

one of the biggest items of importance to me is the commitment the breeder has to the entire life of their litters. Meaning if something were to happen would they take the puppy back and refund to you, your money, or portion of your money if a health defect developed within the 1st year. In conjunction with this if for some reason the puppy is now older (even 8-10 years old) and the owner could not care for it any longer, would the breeder take this dog back? I think this speaks highly of their commitment as a breeder, and in particular to their commitment to their breed lines. Just for the record as an dog & cat owner I have never given up any animal, ever!!! and I would never under any circumstances give up any dog (or cat) that I owned, not for any reason! But not every one is as fortunate as I am, so I think it is important to know the commitment a breeder has towards the litters, because, life seems to have a nasty habit of throwing curveballs at too many people.

It is important to consider the kennel from which to take your puppy, depending on whether you want a pet or want your dog to compete in shows. If you want a pet, you choose him for his feeling and connection with the dog and that connection remains for life, whether he is a male or a female. If you want a dog for exhibitions and competitions and that you start your kennel then you need a person who understands this breed and the standards that are set, you also attach to the dog and he will be your center of the world, but you also want the dog to be well judged on the show, not to be mediocre Many breeders do not look at who their females are paired with and then various genetic diseases or common diseases occur because they are generally sensitive dogs. Who wants to keep a Doberman safe must be prepared for the prejudice of that breed and the responsibility of having a dog like this. They are very intelligent dogs, very loyal, affectionate to the family, they get along very well with young children and other dogs, but to achieve this from an early age it is necessary to socialize the dog so that there is no problem where you will not be able to bring the dog out because fear that they will attack or hurt someone because they have no time for him. I had a male Doberman, who loved people a lot and especially children, but he especially loved me because he was the center of the world for me, so much love between the owner and the dog can only be known by a person who genuinely loves animals and knows the responsibility of caring and caring . All in all, early socialization, walking, running, lots of love and attention and your dog will be perfect. 😍🐶🍀

As a person that was very involved in the dog show world I feel it is imperitive to mention that the fact that a breeder may be very successful in the show arena breeding multiple champions does not mean that they are breeding dogs that are healthy. In fact it is VERY common for these breeders to overlook their dogs genetic flaws if the dog is presumed to be an exceptional show prospect. It is very common for breeders to also breed dogs that are affected with these serious genetic diseases for the sake of attaining the winning show dog. Because of that the Doberman parent club has put in place a registry to entice breeders into focusing on the longevity of the breed. It is called the Longevity program where they offer certificates to individual dogs as well as lines of dogs that have proven longevity with dogs that live to at least 10 years of age. All potential puppy buyers should be asking breeders if they participate in this program and if their dogs have longevity certification. If enough of us insist on this it will force breeders to take health more seriously.

I have lived in three different countries and there are barely any Dobermann or Rottweiler breeders to choose from. I ultimately go for the ones with the nicer and most updated Web site (i.e: showing their current contest results and upcomming litters). This goes without mentioning that they are delivering puppies to new owners almost on a daily basis, so I have not found a lot of interest from them on being very responsive to my questions. I have also found it very dissapointing that breeders do not really allow you to choose your puppy; you are forced to get what they have left for you (I am not sure why this works that way, but I assume that they choose some puppies for themselves for future contests and choose others to privilege old customers and friends). In any case, I feel sound envy for those who are able to choose a puppy like it was shopping in a supermarket.

I ask firstly about the longevity of their Dobes. If they are truly ambassadors for the Doberman breed, they are testing for all those things that shorten the life of the Doberman. If they have longevity in their line, I'm willing to go forward. Having owned Dobermans for over 50 years myself, I am noticing more and more that our beloved breed has a considerably shortened lifespan - bad breeding practices? Absolutely. So, my first question is how long are your Dobermans living (on the average). If they can say 10 or better, I will go forward. Sadly, like so many Doberman owners, I've been burned badly by breeders who aren't exactly forthright about their practices, or their bloodlines. I don't like losing one from DCM at the age of 5.

Turns out he tested positive for something I can't remember right now, but he has the medication. Anyway, the Vet recommended that I have a procedure done on Sammy, that will prevent his stomach from twisting and/or bloating. Is this something that happens frequently in the breed? Or is it more of a "once-in-a-blue-moon" type situation?

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV), is a medical and surgical emergency. It's more commonly referred to as Bloat. The procedure recommended was a gastropexy, where part of the stomach is attached to the abdomen wall, preventing the torsion or twisting of the stomach during an episode of bloat. It is the twisting of the stomach during bloat which makes it lethal. Death can occur swiftly. A gastropexy won't always prevent bloat, but it's rare. The main thing is that the stomach can no longer twist which gives you more time to get to the vet.

@@JoeR203 Yes. Deep chested breeds are most likely to be affected. The doberman is a deep chested breed. Whilst dobermans are considered at risk, in my experience with dobermans and knowledge of other dobermans in my circle, there have only been two that got bloat (of about 300 dobermans) that I am aware of. In that same circle, about 8 have succumbed to DCM, 3 have been afflicted by IVDD (wobblers), one case of VWD.

@4:31 Nope, it is not typical to have BOTH sire and dam on the premises of a well bred litter. That is a red flag unless the breeder is of high reputation and just happened to have used a dog in their possession. There is no substitute for pedigree research. Nowadays the longevity breeders sometimes go back and use dogs from the past who were collected. The sire may not even be alive! There are some fantastic breedings that have come about this way. On the topic of DNA tests the DCM1 (formerly known as Pdk4) is not accurate. A friend of mine endured having to watch her pdk4 negative girl die twice. There have been many Negatives who have dropped dead young. This test is not reliable for predicting DCM AT ALL. In this case there is simply NO SUBSTITUTE for pedigree research. (dobequest.org , DPCA longevity program , be prepared to spend a lot of time on dobequest in particular if your goal is to stack the deck in your favor. VWD in dobermans is NOT the lethal variety that breeds like Scottish terriers suffer from Removing dna "affected" from the gene pool when there are no shortage of dogs in their teens not clinical is genetic malfeasance. I would not hesitate for one hot minute to buy a dog from a breeder minding type and longevity with one of the parents being affected (not clinical) to a clear or carrier. The degenerative myleopathy test has yet to be proven accurate in dobermans. In say borzoi yes, but it is still a very new test and it's possible dogs with DM in the line are not coming up accurately as enough people who know they have it in their lines haven't tested their dogs. This can take years. Yes, echoes and holters are extremely important, although they are only as good as the day they are done a good breeder will have a fresh one within a year of breeding and should be able to provide the results. It can take time to understand the numbers. Kudos to you for mentioning dobequest & OFA. One thing about OFA is not everyone submits because it costs money to submit results, especially for dogs that are not being considered for breeding. And I disagree that breeders don't submit negative results as a rule. They're on there. As an example there seems to be an issue with PPM in the eyes on one side of my dog's ped, not serious enough to affect eyesight but it is something to be aware of. That would come up on a Cerf, and they're only good for one year. And while I'm here PRA is an issue in European dobermans. Great points toward the end, a good breeder will screen you thoroughly, and not every dog in a well bred litter is a show dog, so people should not be avoiding "show doberman" breeders simply because they don't want to do conformation shows. Finally, other resources for overall information is dobermantalk.com and Facebook has a page for celebrating long lived dobermans on longevity clusters which people can use as sort of cliff note to get started on dogs who made it past 10 years of age.

In 2014 I was researching breeders for my first Doberman. I lived in Northern Virginia and was looking for somebody in the mid-Atlantic region. Found Imperial K-9 in Suffolk, VA. Talked to the breeder Rick Patterson on the phone before driving down and touring the facility, meeting the breeder and his family, dogs, and puppies. He was very knowledgeable and was very experienced with the breed. I bought a Black and Tan female from him. Fast forward 3 years and my dog has what I think is hip dysplasia so I go try to contact the breeder to tell him about the health of my dog. Breeder Facebook, website, yelp page- all disappeared. Regular Google search shows his business shut down due to him and his wife being arrested for bestiality. Turns out my dog didn’t have hip dysplasia, she had bone cancer in her rear right leg. Two months post leg amputation with Chemotherapy treatments, the cancer had in fact spread to her lungs and it was too far gone. She died a month short of 4 years old. Still shook by the whole experience. But best dog ever.

@doberchic1895
@doberchic1895 4 жыл бұрын
A good doberman will bond with you at any age. There are great dogs available that are older puppies. Some breeders hold dogs back to see how they turn out or that they hope to place in show homes that fell through. Red males are probably the most readily available and easiest to acquire. That's where you often see older puppies available. There are also rehomes that are no fault of the dogs that are returned to the breeder, since good breeders back their dogs and will take them back under any circumstances. That is why buying from a good breeder is important, if anything happens to you they are well connected and your dog will never see the inside of a shelter or rescue. People die, get divorced, become critically ill. It's great to have that insurance policy in place for peace of mind.

Along with the question about how many puppies per year, I usually check how many female Adult dogs they have (to be the mother). Sometimes, they say: “oh, we only have puppies once per year”, but if they have only 1 dog to be the mother, I think that once every year is too much. Of course, I also care about how many male adult dogs (to be the father), but, for me, the females make even more difference. But, if they say: “we only have puppies once a year” and they have 3 female adult dogs, to me, it looks like they care a lot more to the dogs health.
