The reason your mattress was damp, is because it is laid on the wood surface, a mattress needs to breathe to stop that. You can purchase underlay for your mattress specifically for that purpose

Since the mattresst is enclosed, it may be wise to actively ventilate as well. I myself had a sprung slatted base with a mattress on top. Movement while sleeping makes it work like a lung and moves the air underneath. I had drilled large holes in the overhang. Good luck.

Plus you need a lot of holes drilled into the wood to help air the mattress. As many as you can get away with before affecting the strength of the wood.

👏👏👏 Well, whoever came up with how to integrate the sponsor into the rest of the video deserves all kind of props. Usually I fast forward through those, especially when I'm not interested in the product, as was this case. However, by weaving the product need into your environment and how it affects you, I couldn't do that. The travel to the shop and back, your surroundings, was something I wanted to see. So I "put up" with the sponsor telling even though I'll never use it. Lingoda should pay you extra. And props to your creativity. 👌

@ExpeditionEvans - Even though it’s assumed that that athwart-ships V-Berth support appears to “be” a hull support structure, it’s really not. I’ve worked in the marine industry for close to 45 years, and been a boat builder for close to 40 years, I even sold Beneteau Yachts for a number of years in between. Using a bead of marine adhesive like 5200 instead of glassing the marine plywood into the hull is the reason that it’s obvious that was never Beneteau’s intent to make that V-Berth support part of the hull structure. However, if you want to make that into an actual bulkhead that adds structural support to the hull, then you’d need to incapacitate that entire sheet of plywood in multiple layers of fiberglass to make it a true bulkhead. Otherwise, it will simply transfer that new load to the weakest part of the hull structure…the bare plywood.

fully agreed.....nothing to add except that on my Jeanneau this kind of partition wall (it should be the right term to use instead of "bulkhead" which for me is structural) are not evven glued to the hull, just screwed to the frame / stringer.

While sleeping, your body releases moisture into the environment. This happens through breathing and perspiration through the skin. This fluid loss can amount to more than one liter per night - in some cases even 2.5 liters. At least a quarter of that moisture is removed via the mattress and bed base. You must therefore ensure that moisture can escape from your mattress. This can be done, for example, because your mattress is on a slatted base. or on a spiral. You will always suffer from moisture because you lie on a closed board.

I really hope you guys see this. And I know this is a weird video to comment this on but I just want to say; your videos and channel (both the good side and the bad side) has made me want to get a boat to live on. I’m 23 turning 24 soon and I discovered that I’m very nomadic and adventurous. I told myself if I still want to get a boat 5 years after getting my trade skill (cosmetology) I will get a boat to live on. I will also become an interpreter (me and my bff are gonna learn languages together) so I can work remotely if I do decide to go down that route. I will love being able to just pick up and move from place to place and come back to my home town (which is costal) whenever I want! Thank you guys for showing me it’s possible to do anything you want to do! ❤

It seems to me that it is not structural but installed as a divider or to mount something on it(because it was installed after the gelcoat was applied)

Mmmm, inadequate build procedure is kinda historically a Beneteau thing. They pretty much throw them together and the details of exactly which construction corners get cut is luck of the draw. Whether the half bulkhead is a critical part in structural terms or not, it should have been tabbed in properly to prevent it from fretting against the hull and eventually causing localised weakness of the cored hull’s inner skin. No matter, they’ve fixed it now.
@damientelle
@damientelle 8 ай бұрын
Exactly that is only a partition wall, not a bulkhead. Dońt forget that this boat was existing for somes market as 4 cabin (front cabin divided in half) this partiion wall is thus not existing at all. I could agree that using a 5200 PU to glue it directly on gelcoat (probably not even cleaned after demolding) is not the best quality standart. But it is nothing else that multiple configutation desgin. The only risk of such design is cracking noise at sea. Dońt forget that this boat was grounded. a friend has grounded his 42 feets beneteau (at 8 nds....) exactly the same dammage as Expedition Evan around the keel area (we are on the way to fix it) but we found also similar "crack" on non structural interior panel (back seat, fridge) It is obvious that with such grounding impact the overall hull is twisted, impacting also secondary structure. Nothing abnormal or to blame Beneteau

electric turkey carving knife I find works perfect for cutting foam just so ya know for next time. Also camping I get that wet under mattresses I found a product that is like a 1/2 inch thick honeycomb mat to allow airflow under it. I suppose you could build some type of lattice under it to do the same if you keep getting that moisture under it.

All the old fishing boats in the Northwest have holes cut in the wood underneath their mattresses, or sometimes a lattice type of framework, kind of like the teak grates in some cockpits or head/shower enclosures - to allow moisture to escape.

You may want to add slats under the new mattress. The cover can mildew in humid environments unless you let air pass from top and bottom. At least that's what happened to ours in a coastal city when it was on a solid base.

When you have to move something around that's heavy and floppy like a mattress, and especially if it has no handholds, get a couple of ratchet straps. Fold the mattress over, cinch the straps around it and tighten. Now you have something to hold onto for moving into position. Easier to get through doorways and such as well.

Even with latex you’ll get mould without a way to get airflow underneath. I had a latex mattress on a wooden floor and the body heat from our bodies over winter created enough moisture between the mattress and floor that both the mattress and floorboards got mould within a year.

I have watched the vids of your restoration project from the beginning and I take my hat off to you guys. I have built a boat in every decade since the 1970s, so I know what it takes. On your current issue: Firstly I doubt that plywood is a structural bulkhead. If it was intended to be such it would not be simply edge glued to the hull gelcoat, but be installed with substantial fillets and glass tape reinforcement, as you have now done. Even a 50' hull will "oil can" to some degree when pushed hard in rough conditions, which is likely what has happened to cause the gelcoat to pull off the glass. If it was my boat I would have used a polyurethane adhesive sealant to secure that bit of ply.

Hi guys! I want to echo the comment about having a breather layer under your mattress. If you lay your mattress on a solid platform, your sweat has nowhere to go as you sleep and, once it reaches it, it makes a film of condensation, which goes sour and ends up black. Virtually all upholstery foams are 'open cell', which means moisture will permeate them. I'm not too familiar with latex. It may be 'closed cell', which means your sweat won't go through. But... even so, allowing air to circulate under your mattress, means it will stay fresh for longer. All the best!

Well.... it looks like your latex mattress has been designed to breathe as you sleep. So you should be good to go. You might need a layer on top to bridge the holes though. They certainly left their marks!

I say proud? with a ? as It was abandoned at a boatyard and hasn't been used for 10 years so it's not looking great at all. lol. Still, for £175.00 what could go wrong? 😂 Getting a mooring with it is the real winner though as everywhere where I am on the south coast of the UK there's a waiting list for most marinas, and for £68 a month it's not gonna break the bank either. 😃

Even though the mattress is latex you will still need a way to vent the mattress. Latex holds water like a sponge. Furniture manufactures use latex in their high end products by bonding one or two inches on top of urethane foam. Foam comes in varying firmness levels. The two materials will easily bond to each other with contact cement. Latex is only mold resistant, if mold can grow in diesel fuel it’ll grow on anything. Love your channel and energy levels.

Good idea to switch matress in a mold environment😉But please NEVER put a mattress in direct contact to a flat wooden surface. Use AIRmesh 3D fabric of about 15mm underneath your mattress for ventilation. That’s works great to prevent new mold growth. Good luck and nice dreams on your new mattress and keep up your lovely spirit! Cheers, Steffen

Matresses _always_ get wet of the back of them is on a solid surface. That's another reason beds have slats, it allows them to breath. Without slats, you will need to buy a under-bed-breathing layer, that allows air to circulate under the mattress. People in campervans also learn this quite fast!

I very much doubt this half bulkhead is structural. If you do bond it to the hull, make sure there is a soft foam gap between the actual wood and the inner hull, so as the glass and epoxy cure and shrink slightly it does not pull the wooden bulkhead tight into the hull. If you are not careful here the wooden bulkhead will make stress cracks on the gel coat on the outside of the hull. All bulkheads should be installed in this way so they are not pulled hard-up against the inner skin of the hull. Once installed you will not be able to detect this as the glass join will hide it. All GRP boat builders are aware of this. This is not a problem with Foam floor structures covered in GRP, but is really critical on bulkheads, where the thinner hull sides flex. The bulkhead makes a hard point in the hull where it is seated. Hope this helps.

I took a break for a bit But coming back to the channel and seeing you two. Jade, I have to say you look so healthy. Congratulations, I know it's been a constant effort. Sorry to see the bulkhead failure. But it's a good thing you guys caught it in time.

21:43 - Jade… the grunts are progressive for sure, but they SPEED UP really quickly! And it’s not 65 that is happens, you may look forward to the grunts, cracks, snaps and pops to show up around 40!! When you begin hearing your knees crack just from walking…. you know you’re fully into it and it’s all downhill from there! 😂 Exercise… if you keep exercising in some way and keep stretching, it will go a LONG way to easing all of that. Walk, biking, push ups, squats… do a combination of most of these everyday, and MAYBE the groans and snaps will be minimal u too you’re 60-something. (For the record, I doubt it, but keep exercising anyway… it’s good for you!!). 😜👍🏼☮️

The grunts and groans come earlier depending on the number of times you’ve jumped out of a perfectly good airplane with a full pack. If you know what I mean.. Cheers 🥃 to being young Gumby’s 🏄‍♂️

Be aware your latex mattress with will get mold on the bottom if it can't breath as well. Try to create a slat base for the mattress to breath.(i know latex doesn't get moldy but the wood will if there is no circulation
