I would recommend having a piece of plywood cut to lay flat on the slats to keep your mattress from falling through the slats at all. Much more comfortable and should still be thin enough your mattress fits.

That fireplace - what a find! As for your bed, I've had antique beds with slats for years and your slats ARE a bit far apart. I would ask your guy to add several more slats because your mattress will suffer over time.

Nice office reno, just a tip to anyone renovating , if your house was built before 2000 or even 2010 get an asbestos survey, fireplaces like that are 101 asbestos containing, you dont want exposure to that it is incredible dangerous so always get an asbestos survey. I have a Victorian house and what i thought might have been asbestos wasnt, but my landing was coated in a thin roll of it and i never would have guessed!

re the wood burner - it’s of course also possible to use smokeless fuel outside of smoke control areas! We use smokeless fire logs from B&Q (I think wood briquettes is the right term?) and recycled coffee logs (they don’t ‘catch’ that well, but are brilliant for keeping a fire going). They produce less smoke/ash than burning wood... which I’m assuming should be more environmentally friendly than wood logs? 🤔😊 edit: also to say, the revealed fireplace looks amazing!! It’s going to be such a cosy room.
@slashingbison25038 ай бұрын
Also for wood burners they can be 100% eco friendly, firstly get an eco rated burner they are about 100 times cleaner than old ones (defra rated) get you wood from local sources (wood like birch grows to full adult size in like 5-10 years so they rotate the crop, the trees then absorb the C02 output from burners so there is an eco cycle, in a crude reduced form there! and only burn kiln dried woods and try to buy softwoods or hard/soft mix and soft is waaay more earth friendly as hardwood is getting harder and harder to provide and takes much longer to grow.

I love the new fireplace. Very lovely! For the under bed storage I'd suggest covers (if you don't have some already). Speaking from experience, it is the dustiest place imaginable. I would too add some more slabs. As long as there is still some space in between for ventilation, it's fine.

Cornwall has terrible air pollution. 2018 some areas were as bad as London, Take a look at the air pollution figures on the council website. There is a five year clean air strategy which will hopefully make it better soon ! We have a air filtration machine for inside the house as we are close to the a30 even though we are rural.

Loving your renovations. Your bed slats definitely need to be closer together - those mattresses have a maximum allowed gap between the slats. Your mattress will not last if you don’t have a good base under it.

I have a wood burner in my house and to make it more echo friendly we buy second hand warehouse pellets and we cut them up into fire wood. The place we get them from replants trees for all the ones they cut down and we save wood from going to landfill by burning it. It's also way cheaper than buying wood

The thick ones are from an electrician not wanting to cut further into a wall to fit a new plug socket. I have them all over my flat from where the council redid the electrics and replaced the sockets
@estaban224 жыл бұрын
Yep,. this is the exact reason :)
@rsdxxxx4 жыл бұрын
Equally it could be because the box sockets were inserted long before the recessed ones. All the sockets in my Edwardian home are box sockets presumably fitted in the 50s-60s as electricity was becoming the norm, however when we had a room fitted with three new sockets late last year our electrician told us it was very easy to fit recessed ones for no extra time or cost, as he was cutting new holes and threading the wires under the floorboards anyway - and it's just the more common design now.

The “fat electric socket” and “thin electric socket” are identical, it is just with stone outside walls the box that contains the wiring has to left proud, because they cannot insert the box into a solid wall. On internal walls the boxes are cut into the wall, leaving just the socket face flush with the wall. Your cottage didn’t have any electricity for at least a hundred years, so it isn’t a surprise that it is odd.

just one last comment before I go , rule of thump in decorating , is if its a dark space go darker, if its light, you can go either way. Farrow and ball do a colour called Railings. Check out their eco rating, I think as a company, they are ok. If you ever fancy a change from the white behind the wood burner try a sample pot of that. Just a suggestion.
@MadeleineOlivia4 жыл бұрын
We love the white back to the fireplace! Makes the woodburner stand out 😊 and I think it definitely opens the room up more!
@zanyzoo67674 жыл бұрын
@@MadeleineOlivia The only reason I did suggest this is , you will find that a wood burner produces a lot of dust. That dust does consist of soot. From experience, white and soot have never been a good mix. But horses for course and all that. Doing up a house is never easy. Its hard work , disruptive, it can cause terrible pressure and stress sometime, esp. when you do a lot of it yourself. Ive done up three , and thinking about doing a forth. The good thing is , the more you do the more you learn and the better and easier it gets. Keep up the good work.

Flat plug sockets are usually always supposed to be dual, the fat ones normally started out as a single socket someone has made into a dual socket. Source: my house only had two single plug sockets in each room so I had to do this 🙈

Woodburners go in calories. Meaning the bigger the hotter. And it isn't a that big room. You always be hot and the central heating won't start so all other rooms are cold. Small will be cosy and warm enough. Isn't that "cave" gorgeous. I used candles and flowers as deco in summer when the stove wasn't burning.

I think it’s good to give feedback as long as it’s not done in a negative/judgmental way. The difference between the flat plug and the thin plug is this. A flat socket means the back box has been chased out and recessed in to the wall . The fat socket is mounted on a pattress, which basically means that just the wire has been chased through the wall. Usually a pattress is used when the wall in not suitable to be chased, or it can just be a quicker fix. Ask a qualified electrician , which I highly recommend if you need it sorted out. Because if you want it made flat and the wall is suitable you can have a flatter socket in place of the fat one .
