Hello Emily and Ray, i am so delighted to have found your channel. I am fifth generation American Born Chinese. My ancestors first came to America to work on the railroads back in the 1800s. I grew up speaking Toisanese at home. We also lived with my grandparents. I still speak toisanese daily with my parents and am fluent at the conversational level. I am so happy you guys started this channel and will look forward to your videos:-))

My yeh yeh died during WW2. I only have memories of my ngien who spoken eloquently with Hoisanese. I learnt a few bad words from her as humour. 🤣

I'm first generation ABC that has lineage from 台山 on my mom's side。I speak 3 dialects of Chinese, read some, and write some. Born and raised... brooklyn, ny. We also speak tagalog in my household too. Due to wwii, my grandfather had moved to the Philippines and went back to the village for an arranged marriage. The family then grew in the Philippines. Then my maternal family came to the states in the 80s. This is great to listen to. I'm also the youngest in the family.

Mm goi sai! Much appreciation for the conversation. I was able to follow most of the dialogue, but my vocabulary lacked a few word or expressions. Injecting English did help me build vocabulary or interpret the conversation better.

Very entertaining, this reminds me of getting together with my cousins chopping it up but with sprinkles of Hoi San. BTW, our back stories sound very similar which is pretty amazing what the OG Hoisan folk had to do to get to this country. Have you guys traveled to Hoisan to trace family history or check out the family villages? If not any plans to? Great channel for the preservation of our dialect and heritage.

My father 劉創華 is from Silver river although born in Malaya, now Malaysia.

Silver River is village in 水步， Hoi San ( or Toishan in Cantonese, Taishan in Mandarin). The Silver River is 银河 in Chinese，and the people of Silver River have the last name of Liu 劉。 When I went to high school in Hoi San, my class had a girl from Silver River (and of course her last name was Liu). She lives in Vancouver now.

Wow South Africa! This is a first for me. My dad’s village was near Dou Shan (Au San), in a group of villages called Fow Sek. His village was Gao Bei Ling.

My father was born in Malaya (Nanyang) so I guess that makes me second gen. My grandmother came from Taishan. My mother came from the Sanbu area in Taishan. I hope to visit that village next year to check on my mother's Yan family genealogy book. Whether she had any connection with Martin Yan. My mother was a great cook, herself.😁

There's a lot of Szeyap surnamed 甄 in East/ and North Kalimantan, Indonesia. But they romanise their name as Tjin/Tjhin (pronounced Chin), instead of Yan. I guess Chin is the Szeyap reading?

@@thimmliew7520 That's actually where my family is from. It's on the other coast of Kalimantan. There's more Hakka and Teochew there. But yeah, some Taishanese and others sprinkled in as well. So your friend is more likely Hakka, but could also be Taishanese (both write 陳 as Tjin I believe).
