This is what we need. Imagine if the dialects could be revived, our next generation benefits it. In conclusion, to protect our dialect whether it's Taishanese or not that's our duty.

Hello from Hong Kong!!!! I just wanna say thank you so much for creating this channel and sharing your knowledge about Toishanese!!!!! My grandparents on my mother’s side were Toishanese who immigrated to Hong Kong during the 50s. They always spoke Cantonese with a Toishanese accent to me and I had zero interest in learning Toishanese at all when I was still a kid. But when I grew up, I started to become more and more curious about my grandparents’ mother tongue. Unfortunately, my grandpa passed away a few years ago. So basically learning Toishanese from you makes me feel like I am building back a stronger bonding between me and my grandpa. Please keep it up and I really appreciate what you are doing 😊😊😊😊

Love your reasons for trying to keep our native dialect alive; my siblings and I are now senior ABCs but learned Taishanese from our parents but we still speak it. I know that our dialect is slowly fading away even in Taishan; Changsha; and Sam Fow---the larger towns and cities. All of the school kids are learning Mandarin and English now. I have tried to converse with the school kids that I have encountered on the streets on their way to school but they look at me with funny looks when I speak Taishanese to them. Seems even at home they must be speaking PuTong Hwa now too. The parents and grandparents have given up trying to teach them it seems. Keep it up, Young Lady!! We are Chow/Zhou/Joe from HoiPing.

Thank you thank you thank you for creating this channel! I know this may seem silly, but I recently found out that I'm not only Canto, but Taishanese as well! It happened by accident while listening to someone else explain that they were Taishanese. Instantly, I recognized the language and asked my mom if we were Taishanese and she confirmed it. I don't speak either Cantonese or Toisanese, but being able to hopefully gain some knowledge from your videos gives me a sort of comfort and joy, so thank you again.

You are doing an extraordinary job by trying to preserve your language, which is quite endangered. I am just a dude hoping to learn Cantonese one day, but my heart is bleeding seeing people forgetting their beautiful languages and switching to practical/mainstream ones. Your motivation is the biggest thing - even if one person will start speaking Hoi san waa, your efford paid off. It is also very important to pass the language down the generation. Good luck to you 🍀

Thank you for initiating this! I am second generation Chinese-Canadian and Taishanese was my first language. My parents and all of my aunties and uncles spoke it so I retained the ability to speak it even now. Whenever I hear others speaking the dialect in public, it catches me off guard but it is comforting at the same time. I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to future videos and sharing them with my kids.

I’m a Hoisan (thaishanese or thoishanese for canto or mandarin speakers) speaker born in the US my parents were from guangdong china. My first language was Hoisan yet my Hoisan has gotten worse over the years! 😅 but this was very easy to understand and made me feel at home! I do speak very clear English but I’ve never really felt this close to my language, I’ve always had to watch my Cantonese friends as I don’t know how to speak Cantonese yet I can understand them 😢. So thanks! (PS: learning mandarin in school!)

So awesome! Thanks Jade! You speak the kind of Hoisan my Dad speaks. Dad is from the Taicheng area so some words sound more Cantonese. My Mom speaks the kind that says "Ni" for "you" instead of "Nei" and "do gee" instead of "doo gei" for "myself". Thanks again, I'm an ABC from San Francisco but can speak conversational to almost fluent Hoisan because my parents came in the 80s and I liked it for the most part and was proud of it. I know a lot of ABCs weren't too proud to speak it or say their parents were Hoisan for some reason or the other.

Donald Trump as an example may not be an Anglo-Saxon more closely related to German ancestry. Hans Drumpf was his father's name when he immigrated from Germany to the US and changed his last name to Trump. The US is not a purebred country more like mutts mixed races. At least if they are Caucasian it is difficult to tell. Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were Italian descendants both changed their names to sound English. Italians are very likely to pick a blonde American-born to be their wife rather than their own.

It is interesting that most of your sounds you follow the 台城音 but you have two pronunciations with 好 sometimes you say hao , 同水埗,大江音。

I can speak cantonese and hakka. I feel that Taishan dialect is heavily influenced by Hakka
@laurencechan470

Not 'heavily' influenced . Phonetically, some vowels of Cantonese like short 'a' not aa, is changed to vowel 'i' in both Taishan and Hakka in many everyday used words. Eg 一 yat becomes yit. 九 gau-- giu 十 sap --sip, 有 yau--yiu,收 sau--siu, 真---jan--jin. vowel ou changed to oh (Meizhou Hakka only) 好 hou--hoh, 早jou--joh. The s consonant change to tf with a puff of air is common in Taishan and Meizhou Hakka. Thus Taishanese may sound like Hakka in a way.
